How different would gaming be if disks caught on worldwide in the 80s?

>> No.9064625 [DELETED]

its not that it didnt catch on
people were pirating the shit out of everything & the (((chip shortage))) was over so carts could be sold profitably again

What universe are you from? Definitely not the same where I am.

They would never "catch on" in consoles. It was only a temporary thing, due to the expense of ROM chips.

I remember our local computer store having disk stations where you could load shareware onto the floppies you bought there or brought from home for free, and it probably had some software you'd pay for at the register. (I only got the free stuff of course)
You'd have seen more of that including for NES games.

C64 had loads of action games, zoomzoom. You know it had hardware sprites and scrolling background layers, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MOS_Technology_VIC-II

you are so dumb that it's literally unreal to witness. zoomers are fucking stupid: confirmed and witnessed.

it did in japan for the nes. hugely popular. before that people were using tape.

Er, disks DID "catch on", anon.

Is this the ultimate nintoddler post, or is it someone falseflagging?

>> No.9065019

did sony have patents on floppy disks they way they did with optical disks? I wonder if floppy disk usage would have circumvented sony's entrance into the console market.

It had two layers stupid. Sprite layer and char layer. Yes, the background was rendered as char graphics similar to VIC20.

Imagine how different the gaming landscape would be if ZX Spectrum cartridge games had caught on worldwide in the 80s.

Yes, you need an addon to plug them in. They don't go right in the expansion port. There were barely more than a dozen titles released. Almost as rare as PC Jr carts.

Most C64 games are fast action stuff, without the annoying flickering the NES had.

They were designed for Spectrum 16K model, which had a cartridge slot. The 48K model didn't, and would need an add on to do the same. The extra 32K RAM replaced the cartridge slot.

don't think it would ever catch on really spectrum culture was too closely bound to the advantages of cassettes, i've seen people sharing demos as mp3 files now

ROM chips were always expensive and never ceased to. For a single NES game you could buy more than 60 floppy disks.

if you mean computers and game consoles primarily using CD's, not much. The first game that really made good use of the CD beyond music was Final Fantasy 7. There'd be a lot more FMV games in the early 90's but nobody gives a shit about them

He probably means Amerifat games which were all D&D settings and flight simulators. Most of the action games on C64 were European.

Mid-generation upgrades aren't gone. The difference is that you're expected to buy the whole console again for them nowadays.

HuCards were the best. Diskette size with no retarded magnetic media BS. Those should have become the standard with small slip cases like the Disk system games had.
