So I bought River City Girls (sucks ass) and since it is based off River City Ransom it got me thinking what the best belt scroller on the NES is. I still say it's Double Dragon 1. Awesome music, cool level up system, no currency like RCR so you don't have to waste time backtracking and grinding, and it's short so you can do a quick run whenever you want. DD2 has those stupid platforming elements and DD3 is too damn hard.

This is the only Beat 'em Up I deeply liked for the gameplay aspect alone, thanks to:
>dodge mechanics
>telegraphable or predictable attack pattern from enemies
>wide, yet intuitive and useful moveset
>enemies that require different approaches
>fast movement
>no damage sponge

I feel this lacking in retro Beat 'em Ups (and modern ones too), especially the first 4 items, is this just a matter of taste or am I just not playing them right? Or I haven't played enough games?

Before you "not retro" me, I'm using pic related to spark conversation on what is essentially a retro genre so I can understand it better.

RCG I thought was alright but a bit stiff, still pretty fun with 2 players or even as a party game.

Mighty final fight I liked the best, also like renegade for being able to kick people off platforms and target renegade is fun for being given rediculous names on pirate carts like double dragon 4, the motorbike sounds so weird.

I like the graphics in toxic crusaders but the game has limited moves, I don't think you can even throw.

I paid for Underground when it came out. Played with neice and nephew. Usually we play beat em ups on MAME. We also played the translated SNES River City game. None of us could get into it. It felt like Castle Crashers but without the poop jokes. We pushed through and got to the corporate tower and beat that "final" boss. Then we threw out hands up and were done when the weird scifi stuff started. My neice made me a pixel art fuse beads of Kunio. Then told me "I made it because it was easy, but I hate that game."

Everything is mapped to X/Square so to leave the screen you have to hold X. Want to pick up a weapon, push X. Want to attack, push X. Want to attack and there's a guy knocked down right by you? You pick HIM up instead of the attack you wanted. Similar with Y/Triangle for the ground stomps. Y is stomp, but you have to be pixel perfect or else you'll get your heavy attack instead of the stomp and be left vulnerable. Forward+Y is the dab which has a really long recovery. Walk forward and release and press Y to stomp, sometimes the dab still comes out.

Knock someone down, you better stomp twice and quickly back up and let them stand up, because they WILL do a 3 hit combo on you immediately when they get up. You don't get any (or barely any) i-frames, so you do your special (cannon drill for instance) - this shit happened to me: did my cannon drill, knocked 3 guys down, but the 4th was a pixel above the plane so he punches/combos me out of my special. You have NO invincibility during throws. You grabbing an enemy is a bad thing because you can't just release them, you have to either finish the combo or press Y to throw, in either case you can and WILL be hit by one of the other 6 guys on screen. Sometimes I've knocked a guy down, get hit from the back and fall down myself, the first guy I knocked down wakes up dizzy (stars around his head, meaning he can be grabbed), and I wake-up and auto-grab him and can't release and get hit back down again. Fucking infuriating controls. It's like they designed it with an NES controller in mind, everything is X or Y based and there's so much overlap I was constantly getting moves I didn't want.

Also enemies scale with you so the level up system is pointless. They're almost harder to beat the higher level you get because they all become damage sponges. You do your combo, knock the guy down, stomp x2, back up, combo, stomp, etc. about 5 times to kill one guy, and there's often 7+ on screen. It's just so tedious.

>> No.9052193

>>9052189
Hit the character limit, but to add to the "everything is X" thing, there was a bat on the ground I wanted to pick up, but it was placed right before an NPC/quest giver that to talk to, yeah you press X. So I literally couldn't pick up the bat because it auto-talked to this asshole over and over.

Was gonna say, it's on Fanatical 3 games for $10, so it's like $3 if you want to try it.
https://www.fanatical.com/en/pick-and-mix/platinum-collection-build-your-own-bundle

Not that I would recommend it.

Also the bosses are fucking annoying. One is a 2D Touhou bullet hell and you move slow as molasses, and there's a Guitar Hero thing where you have to dodge notes. I haven't seen any posts on the internet of people saying they LIKE these bosses.

That only 48% of the people on Steam who played RCG have even beaten the 2nd boss tells you all you need to know

>SNES Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon
Does what it needs to. You can pick any of the standard five, pretty standard Final Fight clone, with a base combo that can be finished with a throw if you hold up or down - useful for crowd control. You've got a get off me move with jump and attack, and a charge projectile holding attack which takes forever yet is alright for sniping lined up enemies offscreen. Jupiter's backdrop move is delicious.

>SNES Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon R
More of the same, only you now get a Golden Axe/SOR1 screenclearer with limited usage, and there's a bit more polish and speed, as well as character moves altered for variety. You can Haggar piledrive from a jumping grab with some chars. There's also a Chibi-Usa mode if you wish to be the little girl, which is babbier difficulty but amusing.

>MD Bishojo Senshi Sailor Moon
Fast, has huge sprites, command moves as well as your base combo/throws. There's also these command dashjumps which are good for escapes/getting the drop on stuff. Definitely an evolution of the SNES twosome mechanics/wise, but is single player only - to make up for this every character has unique dialog/endings.

All these are translated now - not that it's needed but it's nice to have dialog in English.

At first they’re a bit tough but it takes like 2 minutes to figure out the hard parts the first time you play, maybe you’ll die a couple times. Together they make up like 4 minutes of the game once you can breeze through them one like, the fifth playthrough.

Replayed the MD version tonight and wow, this is weirder to play than I remember. Your base combo is boring as fuck, you can jump, down and attack into it I guess but you just can't do a thing til it's complete. The dashjumps can do a multihit kick which can be kinda fun to hop in and use, but it causes knockdown. Throws seem super weak and not half as useful. Still think the graphics/levels are better, the music is the Light Crusader/Yu Yu Hakusho guy, whose tunes sound good on the hardware but they're tuneless, unlike the SNES game's, which has music so suiting the show composers did arrange albums which are godly. The dialog and endings are a nice touch though, given I only saw the dub on TV a bunch back in the fucking 90s it's nice to have a little context.

Did a run at SNES R too and jesus fuck the googirls who just titgrabmolest you like something out of a MUGEN ryona game. You can mash til they come close and catch them, but they'll find a way to rape you with their tits. Maybe this is your thing.

The rolling fucks can be done in the same way - they're actually hittable while rolling, just follow up your hits with a throw immediately or you'll be hit out of the combo.
