My most vivid memory about this website is how me, being a 13-year old boy from non-English country, wrote a e-mail to a guy who made NES Gimmick walkthrough with description on how to get all secret treasures.
My intention was to praise him and say thanks for the great job, but what I sent him was most likely the most broken garbled nonsense he ever read in his life, since that was my English level at the time.

I got banned for "claiming" a board if memory serves me right, was ages ago too, think even before the takeover/merge. Anyway, the FAQs were on point, but that's due to the userbase. Whoever modded the place did not have a funny bone whatsoever. Also, to those of you who wrote guides, FAQs, etc. - did you get any sort of a commission for it? If you haven't, that's a shame, because I'm fairly certain that even "official" printed guide books oftentimes used FAQs from GameFAQs as a base. Either way, hey, thanks!

>it was a better time in general
Some things were better, others sucked and we didn't know better. Going into stores to buy video game magazines, local multiplayer at your friend's house, going to the arcades, visiting weird japanese websites on a 56K connection, masturbating to Sailor Moon gifs, arguing about Nintendo consoles on forums. Things were just more localized and "slower", there wasn't so much irony and "avoidance of cringe" in everything people did, everything felt more genuine.

Social media and the iPhone pretty much ruined the internet forever with the flood of unwashed masses, it destroyed forums, smaller community websites, fansites etc. However, I think this was inevitable, the internet was always meant to become a worldwide spanning network connecting every human. We need to be grateful to have experienced a time where dedicated (now called autistic) people put in the work to make unique things about stuff they were passionate about.

I get that feel from time to time. I just went through a period where I reflected heavily on all my divergent friendships. I am, fortunately, at the best point in my life now, but there are so many people I loved who I drifted away from.

If it's any consolation, there are tons of people who you will vibe with now whom you may not have been in resonance with before. That goes for friendships and love interests, etc

We live in a sea of potential and everything is always fleeting.

Anyone else post on NGG? It was basically their /v/, except it was kind of reverse /vr/ in a way, since it was originally named Next-Gen Gaming, and thus as a rule you could only talk about the most current generation and speculate on the next one (IIRC there was also leeway for the immediately previous generation, since there's usually overlap). I remember there was eventually a huge shitstorm over mods all of a sudden enforcing that rule hardcore whenever anyone dared to talk about, say, Super Mario World, since there was a board for "classic games" for that (which, surprise surprise, was dead a fuck). Enough people raised a ruckus over this that SailorBacon, the guy who took over GameFAQs for CJayC, decided to rename the board Nonstop Gaming General, and opened it to discussion of all generations.

2007 was the golden ages for me. Sophomore in highschool. Red vault (the soft drink) was in the machines. Knew some oldschool autists that would break into the computer lab and steal mouse balls and bulbs from scanners. We’d shine laser pointers on the water tower late at night and collect as many old computer parts as we could and Frankenstein shit to play doom and quake on…I was in debate team, their was a games club in my school where you could play risk and dnd, and I remember finding a box with 10 first party n64 games at goodwill for $30. Mudvayne, evanesence, and three days grace were on the radio, people still went on walks in the marsh and everything was a little different…a little more innocent…a simpler time. I’d love to go back.

This is how I best remember it. Back when websites would ask if you wanted a version with frames or without frames (Cheat Code Central I remember did this)

Surely the internet archive has saved them all? They're plain text or simple HTML mostly, surely their crawlers found sll of the guides.

LUE used to be 4chan before 4chan. I remember thinking even as late as 2006 coping that LUE or LueLinks would outlast 4chan
