How do you feel about the NES Galaga, /vr/? My girlfriend knows I adore Galaga, and she found this at a garage sale. I didn't even know it got a port to the NES. How is it compared to the arcade version?

Also, NES arcade ports general, I guess.

>> No.903604

why don't you and your girlfriend go play it instead of asking us and find out for yourselves?

I was just trying to stir up a conversation. Jeez. Sorry for trying something new.
Aside from that, we actually have jobs and lives (and live 50 miles apart) so we can't always be together.

My apologies for rustling your jimmies.

I like the dig dug famicom port.

Why the fuck was it never released here?

Oh well I'll just gotta get a copy, I already have a famicom converter.

Not him, but I'm curious: why are you making a thread about a game instead of playing it yourself? It'd be somewhat understandable if you didn't have the game and wanted an opinion before making a purchase. But you already have it, and you got it for free, so what's stopping you from firing it up and formulating your own opinion on your own?

If you really wanted to talk about arcade ports, wouldn't it have been nicer to have some material to talk about prepared beforehand?

The NES typically got the best ports of early '80s arcade titles, and could be considered the de-facto home versions...at least until "retro" compilations like Namco Museum began appearing in the 1990s.

In particular check out the unlicensed Tengen port of Pac-Man. Though Ms. Pac-Man on the Genesis is even better.

HAL Laboratories did ports of Stargate (called Defender II on the NES for licensing reasons) and Millipede. When you start a new game of Defender you hear a certain familiar tune...I grew up with this game but it's actually one of the weaker arcade ports on the NES.

I've been thinking about tracking that down, and also Millipede and Defender II as well. They look decent enough, simple fun. I have no place for a cocktail table even if I could afford it, so the ports look good.

>> No.904252

Never played it so I'm curious too. I never played anything except a pac-man machine at my local laundromat so my only introduction to galaga was namco museum on the n64. That one kicked ass, though.

Seconding this. I'm fine with arcade port discussion, but your starter for it was pretty weak. Ironically, it did drum up discussion by people pointing out it was bad, but I guess this was a case of it working out better.

As for ports, I would love to know if any of the berzerk ports are worth my time. I typically just fire up the arcade version on mame but it might be cool to have some actual carts.

Vectrex version is the best.

I still find it hilarious that this is one of the best NES ports, is completely in english, and still didn't get in America.

What was Nintendo thinking, that prints money!

>> No.904675

>>904253
Berzerk was one of the "good" Atari 2600 games.

It was faster and more claustrophobic than the arcade game. I may be biased because I grew up with it but the original doesn't even touch the atari port for me.

Companies could only publish 5 titles a year in Murrica. Plus it was a port of an early '80s arcade game; I can't imagine it would've sold very well.

sort of, nintendo wants to avoid low quality crapware from developers that plagues atari and leads to 1983 videogame crash

Never knew that, I wonder how many more crappy licensed games we would of got without that.

I was thinking about that Galaga port the other day.

How is it OP/rest of /vr/? I do love me some Galaga.

It's a really good port. Very close to the arcade in terms of gameplay and feel.

It's a good port. Not as good-looking or -sounding as the arcade version, but it plays almost exactly the same, and that's what matters.

I remember setting up NESticle and the Galaga NES rom for my Pop way back in the 90s, because it was his favorite arcade game of all time and MAME didn't have a frontend worth a damn back then.

Yea i would say it's a good port. I also loved this game but if your going to play a game like this your going to need the rite controller.
