Everything N64-related here (buying, emulating, game discussion, etc..)

The n64 homebrew/romhacking community is awesome. Recently downloaded a starfox 64 randomizer and it adds some nice features such as boss rush mode and level select. The random dialog options are hilarious at times too.

Smash remix is really neat. I hope they add banjo soon.

Mario kart amped up is a promising mod too.

I hope someday custom content comes out for jet force gemini. I know there were some unused enemy types and some levels as well so I think some cool custom content could be possible. Not likely though.

Apparently the Switch controller for N64 is analog not optical but it didn't make any difference to me.

The Switch N64 controller can't take expansion packs because it has built in rumble where the pak goes. However, the Bluetooth adapter I linked has a slot. Some weird trivia.

1. The Switch controller will only rumble if you insert an actual rumble pak into the adapter. BUT, the rumble pak doesn't need batteries (if you put batteries in its going to shake and rumble the BT adapter across the table)
2. Memory card works. Did a quest 64 playthrough on it

The N64 is a gaping hole in my knowledge of that gen of systems. My friend had a Saturn, I had a PS1, and later my friend got a Dreamcast when I got a PS2.
All I know about the N64 is Smash Bros, Mario 64, Pokemon Snap, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, and Mario Kart 64– because I played them at McDonald’s and Target occasionally, and had a few ports on my (3)DS later on.

depends on what genre you like, the n64 obviously lacks sidescrollers, rpgs, shmups and japanese "hidden gems" outside of some noteworthy games but has a good amount of 3d Platformers, racing games and FPS
Some you might like that aren't the usual Nintendo and Rare titles:
Goemon's Great Adventure (2D Platformer)
Mischief Makers (2D Platformer)
Hybrid Heaven (RPG with wrestling elements)
Shadowgate 64 (First-person Adventure)
Shiren the Wanderer 2 (RPG)
Project Wonder J2 (Raising Sim)
WinBack Covert Operations (Third-Person Shooter, has a ps2 port but I prefer the 64 version)
Body Harvest (Action-Adventure)
Rocket: Robot on Wheels (3D Collectathon)
Sin and Punishment (On-Rails Shooter)
Star Wars Rouge Squadron (Flight-Action, there's a pc port but iirc it might not work on modern systems)
Robotron 64 (Arcade shooter)
>is it worth picking up a flashcart?
depends if you actually wanna go through what the N64 offers, this includes the Nintendo and Rare games, games that have modern ports like Turok, Duke64 or Doom 64 along some other titles that are quite polarizing amonst fans (DK64, Castlevania 64, etc...) or the racing games (which imo the system excels at).

F-Zero X is probably the fastest racer in the console, also runs at 60fps.
Extreme-G and Star Wars Racer are also solid racing games but they don't run at 60fps like F-Zero X does, I also like AeroGauge but not many are fond of it.
If you want more arcade-y racers, Cruis'n World is really good, Beetle Adventure Racing is also really good, Rush 2 is also great and quite challenging, Off-Road Challenge and California Speed are mindless fun, Hydro Thunder is really fun though there's a DC version which probably is better, MRC and Rally Challenge 2000 aren't anything special but I had my fun with them.
Other "arcade" experiences would be Asteroids Hyper 64, Space Invaders 64, Bangai-O, Knife Edge Nose Gunner, Star Soldier Vanishing Earth, Dezaemon 3D and obviously, Star Fox 64.

Debatable.
I really think you should just get the full romset and browse through them on an emulator before you make that decision.
I for one have many fond memories of the n64 and still enjoy playing its games to this day. But I only got a console + everdrive because I wanted to play some console romhacks on the couch instead of on my PC.

People jizz all over stuff like Pokemon Snap and Zelda but those games always bored me. Mario 64 is a certified classic and should be 100% by every gamer. Mario Kart 64 is objectively the worst in the franchise but also somehow the best. Smashfags hate Smash64 but I personally like how slow and kinda surreal the game is. GoldenEye is complete dogshit and there are so many other versions of it to play out there.

Mario Party 2 & 3 are incredibly fun with friends, but even that's only because of nostalgia I think.

Absolute NPC tier opinion, but okay.
That's like implying all the emulation done in this board and emulation filter discussions are some sort of hoax. People still play the older entries in many franchises, you're just an NPC faggot.

rubberbanding is annoying but if you get good at the game the cpus are a cakewalk because they don't spam items like in later games (not to mention how fucking obnoxious they became from DD and onwards), also almost every track in the game is memorable, same with the roster (for sure i don't need shit like the babies or every koopaling being a slot).
The only problem 64 has imo is the lack of modes like a Vs. CPU, CPU Battle or Staff Ghosts in every track, and I guess the balance favoring lightweights over everyone.

been very out of it mentally lately, after some failures i fell off my game restoration/fixin work. Today i might go ahead and get back on the ball with N64 controller fixes, replacing og stick units with kitsch bent. Gotta say, those people are kings for supplying such quality parts for cheap. Though i probably wont make this a side business, not sure why, just not that confident in my work.

Is there way to get better framerate on n64? Would change of old thermal paste to newer make improvements, and also getting rid of possible dust (if there is any) inside the console?

And what of picture quality and latency? About half a year ago I got myself a retrotink's 2x mini , I tried both on "old" sony flat tv, and on my pc monitor, but I feel not only the image quality wasn't really better from regular video method (forgot which one I had before the mini), but the latency was still there, even with analog->digital pipeline removed from TV, the latency was noticeable (or maybe it's the dogshit fps of goldeneye) because the game was unbearable even on my PC monitor. After missing lock shots on dam couple of times too many, I just gave up.

>> No.9064289

for refenrence, couple of months ago I got 2 tb hdd for my xbox, and the image quality on my xbox is just so much better, and so is framerate. now i know it's not fair cause it's newer generation, and the textures aren't as compressed. but i mean it's with regular xbox cable, no gimmick no hdmi nothing special, "it just works", I was so surprised at the image quality.

there's no way unless someone makes a romhack to improve performance (like what kaze is doing with mario 64), overclocking the n64 makes the games go faster but not in the "better performance" way, think of it as a pseudo fast-forward, it can also damage the console so don't do that.
>picture quality
get s-video or mod your console for component/hdmi output, if you have a flashcart you can use the deblur patcher on your roms and make the game look better on hd screens.

Goldeneye 007 can eat inputs if the framerate is too low (usually when there's too much shit happening), iirc only Statue and Jungle had very low framerate overall.

Was cleaning up at my grandma's house and found my old consoles. Will probably sell everything as I don't play them anymore.

How can I fix crackling audio on m64p in linux?

>> No.9071787

>>9071581
Good question. IIRC on the mainline version (the one without a GUI) you could mess with the audio buffer settings in mupen64plus.cfg, but they're nowhere to be seen on m64p. Maybe try the RetroArch version if all else fails, as good audio sync is supposed to be one of its strong points.

>> No.9071819

>>9071787
Well, for the time being, Rosalie's mupen gui is working wonderfully, aside from changing the parallel settings, and switching the cpu emulation between certain games. Much preferable, compared to the audio problems. Could never get myself to care much for Retroarch, even after using f5 for the desktop overlay. The Duckstation fiasco doesn't help either.
