Did anyone ever play or grow up with these weird clone consoles? Were there any good original games for them? Most just look like bad hacks or sprite swaps, but I imagine someone must have been making games for these things.

Yes, but most if out of China rather than the eastern bloc. Demakes have been popular in the past decade, Pokemon, Final Fantasy VII, Resident Evil. Then you have your classic "Chinese originals" like Kart Fighter, Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter II, Somari, 16-bit-to-8-bit ports like Lion King, Boogerman, among others.
