All the problems with licensed music are caused by devs being cheap and not wanting to pay for proper licenses.
There's some weird older games with licensed music still available today digitally with no alterations because they decided to spring for that extra long licensing period like Burnout 3. Meanwhile other games have been removed from sale just for having a single licensed song in the entire game.

It's not just video games. Cartoons like Captain N and Super Mario Bros. 3 had to have major soundtrack overhauls on DVD because of all the pop music they used.

>>9033715
It's understandable with older games and TV shows that couldn't foresee potential rereleases in other formats. But anything PS2 onward has little excuse for not building future releases into the license terms. Back with Sonic 3 it wasn't expected people would ever care to play these games again on later systems.

I think it was confirmed more or less that Michael was in-directly involved in composing part of the soundtrack. I think the main issue isn't so much the Jackson state but Brad Buxer. Stranger in Moscow and Jam are different enough from Staff Roll and Carnival Night to have some plausible deniability, but Ice Cap and Hard Times are 1:1 and Brad Buxer is still alive and well to actually get an attorney involved for decades of unpaid residuals. I don't know what sort of contract was involved but SEGA fucked up not securing anything and Buxer fucked up by not making sure if his work made it to the final game or not, and SEGA could've probably gotten away with it had their fanbase not been a bunch of extreme autismos who managed to track down Brad Buxer and made him aware of S3&K's final OST. Decades of residuals yo use the original music might be enough to bankrupt the company a second time unless SEGA and Buxer were to reach an agreement in the form of DLC similar to how Nocturne HD handled Dante.

Yeah, the other guys probably didn't care enough. never seen the Pop Fiction thing. I know it was a big deal when people brought up the Sonic 3 connection. When you piece it together, you can hear the MJ influence in the music. It seems to make the most sense that MJ may only have sent Sega/ his team cassette recordings of his voice making beats/ melodies/ beat boxing. And his collaborative team on this project did the rest. That seems the most likely.

DAC =Digital Audio Channel. The genesis only has one of them at its disposal, and developers get their mileage out of it depending on hos good they are with it. The other 5 main channels are the FMsynth. I think the DAC can be used as a 6th FMsynth channel when not being used as a DAC. The PSG channels are part of the secondary 8-bit audio chip that is used for Master System backwars compatibility. Also the Genesis/ MD has an 8-bit z80 CPU used for Master System BC that also gets used as the 'audio controller' for the FMsynth/ DAC and PSG chips.

>Interesting. I had picked up that the PSG channels were 8-bit channels, but didn't realize that they were specifically from the Master System part of the Genesis.

The MD has the z80 and the PSG audio chip, and a graphics mode in the main graphics chip that can do SMS BC? The Power base converter was just a way to use SMS cartridges, cards, and it has the reset switch on it. But in the Genesis the z-80 becomes the main audio CPU, and the PSG gets used as back up audio channels, or sometimes gets used for sound effects.

>The Power base converter

Not a bad compromise. If you wanted to keep using your SMS games, on your MD/ Genesis, just spend $20.00 on the adaptor. Genesis/ MD uses the same 9-pin controller ports. Sega would sometimes give them away for free in deals, or as a bundle thing with the Genesis between 1989 and 1990. I had a SMS2 on loan from someone, and used a Genesis 3-button pad with it for everything. I just hate the SMS square d-pad - pads.

>It doesn't have loadtimes in-game.
Being on CD does affect the game, though.

>Some of the audio in Sonic Jam is different from the original Mega Drive versions, with most music tracks having a slight delay before playing (likely due to CD loading times). This is particularly noticeable when collecting Power Sneakers, as rather than speed up the music already playing, a different, faster version of the tune is swapped in (and subsequently swapped out), with the track restarting each time (it can also cause results screen music to start playing for a second time if an extra life is obtained). Also, many sound effects have been sampled at a lower quality (or seemingly replaced, as is the case with many explosions), while others are missing, such as the sound for transforming into Super Sonic. While players can still charge spin dashes, the pitch of spin noise no longer rises when doing so.

Why are Saturn fans so disingenuous? It's okay you wanna have SOMETHING to play on your failed system, but lying to the internets and saying your version is best is just wrong.

Having an obvious sound difference due to it being on CD audio doesn't mean the game has "loading times", though. You are the disingenuous one, typical projector.
Having loading times would be if the game had actual extra loading time in between stages, something like Chrono Trigger on PS1.
Sonic Jam's game loadtimes (transitons from level to level, etc) is no longer than in the original Mega Drive versions.

Did you miss the part where it specifically said having CD loading causes music to fuck up?

Stop splitting hairs and damage-controlling a flawed port of the game, mate. I never said it added loading transitions, just that having to load from CD makes it worse than on a cart, where music plays seamlessly and correctly. And then there's the lo-fi/wrong sfx issue.

Just a poor version of the game overall. But it's ok, I know you're coping over wasting money on a Saturn with sunk cost fallacy and convincing your autistic self Jam is best makes it better.

You aren't mentioning sound differences due to the CD loading, you said "load times", which would make it seem as if the game had extra loading time than the originals, which is not the case.
Yes, the speed shoes's music can't dynamically change the speed because the CD needs to load, but that doesn't mean you have to wait extra time on a load screen.
>But it's ok, I know you're coping over wasting money on a Saturn with sunk cost fallacy and convincing your autistic self Jam is best makes it better.
I also have a Sega Genesis with the original versions. I just prefer to play on Jam because it has time attack mode (honestly the only way I tend to play Sonic these days when I'm feeling like it since I've played them countless times, I'd just rather pick random levels and try to beat my best times), and Sonic 3 specifically fixes the sound in Ice Cap 2. Being able to properly listening to a level's music while it not being affected by the game's sfx is a bigger positive to me than speed shoes music here and there.
but, if you want to hate on the Saturn this much, do it, nobody cares. Just don't try to paint me as disingenuous when you're the one moving goalposts, twisting meanings and having a weird hateboner for the Saturn.

The time it takes to load off a CD to swap in the music = "CD loading times", you daft autist.

>I just prefer to play on Jam because it has time attack mode (honestly the only way I tend to play Sonic these days when I'm feeling like it since I've played them countless times, I'd just rather pick random levels and try to beat my best times),
Sonic 3 already has a level select once you beat the game, and you can write down, record to a VHS tape, or take a picture of your TV screen after you clear each act of the times you had. Pointless mode.

>but, if you want to hate on the Saturn this much, do it, nobody cares. Just don't try to paint me as disingenuous when you're the one moving goalposts, twisting meanings and having a weird hateboner for the Saturn.
Correct. The Shiturn killed Sega, everyone has a right to hate on that piece of shit.

You're being disingenuous and you know it, that's why you accused me of being it. Simply saying "CD loading times" doesn't make people think about Sonic's speed shoes music not dynamically changing speed, it makes people think of Loading screens and extra waiting time.
>Sonic 3 already has a level select once you beat the game, and you can write down, record to a VHS tape, or take a picture of your TV screen after you clear each act of the times you had. Pointless mode.
Already having your best times readily recorded on the game's memory is just way more practical, AND the most important thing, you can select the Act too, on the original game's level select you can only choose the Zone, but always starting from Act 1.

This is the definition of backpedaling.
When people mention "CD load times", it means the extra waiting time, not the fact a CD loads up a track in literally a second or less.
Should have specified you meant the audio at least, but nope, you outright said "CD load times". Own it up, loser.

What if the Sonic 3 composer just ripped off MJ's music? It would explain Sega's reluctance to admit to the truth of the situation
Sure, it's easy to think, "Oh, they just don't want to be associated with MJ anymore because of the alleged kid diddling" but if that were the case wouldn't they have advertises Sonic 3 as having MJ's music?
