I think this was the first game I had to force myself to like to stem the disappointment.

They could've went in so many directions with the concept of Pokémon in 3D but it's just a restricted Game Boy port with mediocre N64 graphics.

The models and animations do have character, but it's in service of turn-based gameplay which will always look stupid in 3D.

That's not at all what it is ylu fucking retard. Did you even play the game? It's a 3D battle simulator. You're supposed to connect your GB games to play with your team in 3D. Beat the challenges and you can unlock shit for the game boy games to help you complete the Pokedex.

Also the mini games are fucking kino.

This isn't the only 3D Pokémon game for the N64. It's not even the first one to have been released. They did try some things. Did you want a Super Mario 64 clone or something?

playing pokemon silver on stadium 2 and then going through the gym leader castle with my ingame team is one of my favorite gaming memories. I even owned (still do) 2 transfer paks so I could use my boy alakazam. seeing your pokemon you caught and trained yourself in full 3d on your tv and able to battle was crazy to me as a kid.

You just reminded me that the mini games were where I spent 95% of the time playing it to recoup the disappointment. Even then I only really played the eating game because the food sprites looked tasty. You seem to think this was an endorsement for the game which is kind of funny to me.

Let's not be honest here, most people only played Stadium for the mini-games. This shit was the best party game. Part of why the gamecube and wii games sucked ass was their exclusion of mini games.

In fairness to that anon I can see how it would come off that way from my post. I'm writing it as an adult knowing that it was a lazy cash grab and not how I saw it as a kid, when I just felt let down. Thing is that I'd been tracking the game for ages in magazines and they were always just vague enough to where it felt like it was going to have a much bigger scope than it did.

If it took advantage of the RBY connection more I'd have felt better about it. The whole idea is about seeing your Pokémon in 3D but the only real difference to rentals is that yours aren't levelcapped and maybe have a nickname. Although that illusion of personalisation is more a problem with Pokémon in general than just with Stadium.

It speaks to how strong Pokemania was that you could release something like this as a full-fledged console game and still make bank, and have adults defend it to this day. The minigames are indeed fun but it's cope to say that they're enough to justify the $60 purchase.

The only thing that would have made the Stadium games more kino would be if the GB tower played the games in 3D instead of just running the gameboy rom on tv like the super gameboy. Imagine those sweet n64 graphics on the overworld. It would have been the definitive way to experience Pokemon.

Amazing presentation, but not great games. Felt more like a quickly tacked on campaign despite the really nice worldbuilding and environments, very limited Pokemon selection, only wild Pokemon in the second game and even limited in that regard. I would love to see a reworked version of those games with a more expanded overworld.

>> No.9034646

I still clearly remember having a lot of fun with stadium as a kid.
Fast forward to now, I booted it up and I was massively surprised that the actual game has so few things to do.
My memory was mostly of playing the minigames over and over and failing at the tournament (never obtained surf Pikachu) and that kept me entertained for hours

Nah, the Stadium 3D models are amazing.
>but it's in service of turn-based gameplay which will always look stupid in 3D.
well, that was 5th gen in a nutshell. 5th gen and onwards.
I don't think it looks bad, the animations of Stadium are some of the best of the era. But yeah basically Stadium is better enjoyed as a companion of the GB games. I recently replayed Blue while using Stadium (for storing pokemon, applying/rearranging items, etc) and it's a godsend.
The stadium cups are also a great incentive to train pokemon of lower levels or different characteristics, on top of serving as a great post-game content with the Round 2 cups.
As a kid, I mostly rented it for the mini-games though. Always a blast to play with friends.

All the early 3D Pokémon games (the entire stadium series, Pokémon XD, XD Gale of Darkness, etc. As well as all of generation V were complete and utter garbage, because I kind feel like the world really wasn’t ready for 3D Pokémon just yet. Nintendo has a long and storied history of using technology before it has developed to the point of being worth a damn (looking at you, virtual boy) but I think generations VI and VIII were both spectacular. Wasn’t really a fan of S&M mostly because they were intentionally making a “vacation” generation based on Hawai’i that was supposed to be different from the rest thematically. Even professor oak was there, but this time with a tan and leis around his neck, plus obligatory old guy on vacation floral button-down. That said, the game mechanics of Gen VII were spot-on and I had a blast playing smogon in the S&M era. Sword and Shield fell prey to the Christmas rush a little but were amazing, especially after the DLC was a thing. More than anything else, I love how they’ve expanded on the one thing that the early Pokémon games desperately lacked, a real feeling of connection between a trainer and their Pokémon. When you interact with your Pokémon in the newer games, you really stop viewing Pokémon as being slaves or tools and start seeing them for what they really are: a consenting party in a martial art built for team play. Mystery Dungeon helped expand on the idea of Pokémon being sentient, feeling creatures, in some ways more prone to violence and competition than humans, and in some ways less so. I used to be really into Poképorn and ironically it was being able to sit in a room with braixen and actually interact with her that mostly broke me of that habit, because I saw that she was better as a friend than as a hooker.
