Where did it go wrong for Hudson?
Bomberman, Adventure Island, Bonk, even did some stuff for Disney.

Nothing on their end, parent company NEC was struggling.

>wacky tie in media produced
>good licensed games
>unashamedly Japanese style
>basically had PC Engine as their own console while still making games for all platforms
>fucking amazing in house PCEngine CD music development
>nostalgic and cool as fuck HQ that looks like the factory from TOYS

Besides bomber and adventure island in the 90s, i didn't really know much about them, but years later seeing more of their shit, i dare say they had that "fun game company" feel that a lot of people seem to think Nintendo had.

Their bank went belly up so all their assets and investments were wiped.

and

Also NEC started to fall apart because they didn't have a console after the TG16 Duo. They weren't allowed to put all their forced in to Saturn or Playstation, which really hurt them.

>> No.9032564

Yeah, it's more that their line of funding vanished instead of bleeding talent/lack of quality games.

Hudson never intended to go all in on the PC-FX. Most of their 2D catalogue was shifted fairly quickly to SFC in 1994-1996 and you had releases like Hagane, DoReMi Fantasy, Super Bonk, Tengai Makyou Zero, Super Bomberman 2-5.

They kind of ignored PS1 but had good output on Saturn/N64. Perhaps would have struggled with 3D games into the later generations like a lot of their contemporaries faced. I think the shift to HD or higher end machines would have inevitably caused consolidation regardless.

Actually that's wrong. The Nintendo games are straight RPGs.

There are 3 spinoffs, Momotarou Matsuri that is a party minigame collection with a quest mode where you play minigames reminiscent of bomberman in place of bosses

There is a train monopoly boardgame that uses real train stations location from Japan. So strongly Japanese it hurts and seem to be the most fondly liked in the series.

Dengeki GB and Katsugeki PCE are platformers with goemon-like towns and npc.

I remember playing Adventure Island as a kid and it being so hard yet so fun to play and every time I'd get a little bit further in the game and about to get to the boss I'd be geeked and excited to see what new head he was going to have this time.

Oh no, it's seems you've asked a loaded question.
Before asking "where did it go wrong" for Hudson, you first need to define what "going wrong" is meant to suggest, and then adequately establish with evidence that it DID, in fact, "go wrong" for Hudson.
I'll wait while you make your case.

Same, it's weird how these super tiny little things were so exciting as kids. Getting far enough in a game that you saw some minor change in a sprite or some new type of object alone was enough "reward" for playing

>> No.9033263

>>9032948
Same. I even started writing my own walkthrough book with "tips" for games I've played. I never managed to get past 4-2 as a kid, though. I knew about a bee but couldn't figure out what's it for. Also thought it's a ghost.

> weird how these super tiny little things were so exciting as kid
They're still exciting. You know how there's a mini-game in GBA's WarioWare called Paper Plane? I actually bought it as a standalone title for DS back in the day and spent good two weeks playing it. Just something as simple as different characters looking through the window and screen color changing are pushing you forward to get even better at the game. Some magic.

The uncomplicated answer was swelling development costs and the Western-oriented market from PS3/Xbox360 generation onward were not kind to mid-budget Japanese developers and publishers like Hudson.

Things are finally stabilizing with digital marketplaces allowing smaller budgeted and indie games to prosper without having to invest in manufacturing without profit, but we've lost too many of my favorite Japanese developers and publishers to get here.
