I remember being pleasantly suprised by the scope of light crusader. Lots of cool puzzles and challenges that mix up the dungeon crawling. Especially love the time travelling at the end with all sorts of whacky locations and enemies all of a sudden, very unexpected!

I remember landstalker having stiff controls and fuck you level design. I feel like i wasnt in the right headspace at the time and i will give it another shot some day.

There are a lot of complaints about Landstalker's controls. I can't help but think that most people that complain must be playing on a keyboard. With a controller it is perfectly intuitive to just press the diagonal directions as diagonal movement is all the game allows. And the people who played with a real Mega Drive controller and still complain, well those ones are just nincompoops.

Considering I played light crusader which is also an isometric game and had no problems maybe it has more to do with it actually being clunky and not to do with it being hard to press diagonals. I played it with a megadrive controller, I love tank controls, don't get so defensive.

Light Crusader is unironically Trashure's only good game. No cringey art, sticks to the core gameplay whilst not throwing any gimmicks randomly at you and actually has tight level design in addition to superb boss fights, one of which they would fuck up on with their other games.

>> No.9036806

Light Crusader is just kind of special in a way that Landstalker isn't. It's 80s sword and sorcery done the Treasure way. The soundtrack alone is sublime. Sometimes it's hard to say if somehing feels special because it is or simply due to nostalgia. I am certainly nostalgic for Light Crusader because I had it on the MD, but I had lots of games and am not nostalgic for most of them. And shit, it's a Treasure game. Makes sense it should be memorable on its own.

Mine had a faulty battery for some reason, so I never knew the saves were supposed to persist after reboots. But that was actually a godsend, because I beat the thing in one sitting every time, sometimes unlocking this secret and sometimes that. It was a unified experience - just one epic dungeon delve. Graveyard, weird music, a movable tombstone... dungeon music starts playing. Fuck yeah.

You'll have to apply a romhack to make that scene available: https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5877/
They've blocked the room with a maid in the versions outside of Japan despite having translated the dialog.

>> No.9047816

I don't have a savefile to test that scene but I am quite sure you can apply both IPS patches and it should work since they patch different rom regions. Just use only one of the two available control scheme patches (and they only work on US version).
But if you're playing with a gamepad using analog stick mapped to the dpad you should be able to comfortably play it without the control patch. Maybe increase the deadzone to 25% or so, that's what I am doing. I am in the last dungeon, I just can't be arsed to do the last stretch.

Landstalker's controls aren't as bad as some people say, you just have to "lock in" a 90 degrees direction change by using diagonal inputs and then you can just use just normal inputs to walk up and down that axis.
For example press diagonally up and right to go isometrically "up" once and then you can use either up or right inputs to keep going that way or press down or left to go down. Press either diagonally upleft or downright to lock into the other axis.

>>9047816
>you just have to "lock in" a 90 degrees direction change by using diagonal inputs and then you can just use just normal inputs to walk up and down that axis.
But why? Why not just hold down the exact diagonal direction you wish to walk in? How is it in any way more intuitive to press a direction that does not actually exist in the game instead? I don't understand why people don't just press diagonally as it is perfectly natural.

How? The directions you need to push are 1:1 with the on screen action. I just can't understand this complaint. When you want to move diagonally up and left on the screen, why would you press anything but up+left? It makes no sense to even want to press a direction that does not correspond to what you see omn the screen.

I wouldn't say it's the only good 3D Sonic platformer, there are other good ones to me, but it sure is refreshing to see someone acknowledge it as not only counting as a 3D Sonic, but also consider it good overall, since it seems to be mostly bashed out there, even the Director's Cut, which I feel improved upon the original's foundation quite a lot. I know this might sound odd, but one thing that bothers me about Sonic's fan gaming scene, is that even though there are so many, and plenty of excelent quality, few ever attempt the Sonic 3D Blast formula again, even though it's a formula which could be greatly improved by being on an more traditional 3D perspective, instead of isometric, and with more platforming in the level design.
