Does anyone else remember playing this?

It gave me the biggest obsession with plungers. I made my parents buy me a toilet plunger for Christmas because of it.

Unfortunately, real life plungers don't stick to anything and everything with virtually no effort.

One of my favorites as a kid. It was among the few that I sold to a Funcoland, the only time I ever sold games in my life. I ended up missing it and asked for it again for my next birthday.

I could not that second copy in my collection, so I recently got a third copy and played through it again. It isn't as good as I remember. It is very linear but gives the impression that it is not with the item gates. It looks pretty good but the control is a bit clunky.

I was just thinking about this game yesterday for some reason. I loved it, it really felt like you were on an adventure.

I was surprised to learn that the Disney games from that period were actually developed by Sega. Explains the high quality.

>I was surprised to learn that the Disney games from that period were actually developed by Sega. Explains the high quality.

Capcom had various Disney licenses to make games for the NES around this period. But, that was still from a time period where a publisher like Capcom couldn't develop games for the MD/ genesis, as they still had exclusivity deals with Nintendo. Sega picked up a few Disney Licenses for the MD/Gen, SMS and the GameGear. One of the first Disney Sega games I ever played was actually Castle of Illusion on the Master System. I played QuackShot for the Genesis a few years later. The lead designer on most of the Sega-Disney games is the producer on the Kingdom Hearts games at Disney Interactive in Japan.

Yes, it was one of the first games I got gifted as a kid.
It wasn't my favorite game on the genesis, but I played it often.

I remember the roof levels very well.
Good game.

I don't think it was meant to be nonlinear per se, more like a cute puzzle to keep you replaying a few times till you knew the order.

I think Castle of Illusion is one of the better platformers on the SMS, the Genesis/ Mega Drive game is still good too. They are two different games as well. It's also on the GameGear as well, and the GameGear version literally is the Sega Master System ROM on a GameGear cartridge. It's not even a port.

I replayed it and I remember it looking a lot nicer than it did.

That makes a lot of sense, they feel like someone involved in the direction was really writing a love letter to Disney. Even the scariness and sense of peril of some of the older Disney films was captured perfectly in those games

I tried playing this blind as an adult and got a game over right at the end with the invisible platforms. Was there some clue I missed in what you are meant to do?

This game was the only way I was able to identify the console owned by my cousin as Sega Mega Drive, since the whole thing was for whatever reason inside a wooden housing made by my uncle. I never knew what console was inside, other than it run QuackShot

>> No.9030526

>>9030298

Those platforms got me in my recent replay. There is no trick to my knowledge other than edging forward and if no platform appears, then it will appear with a jump forward. There's only one with a gap larger than one platform long and the very last jump has no platform, so they take some trial and error. Some bullshit if you ask me.

I played this and World of Illusion a shit ton as a kid. Incredibly quality platformers.

>Does anyone else remember playing this?
Yes, it was one of the few cartridges I had for my Mega Drive/Genesis when I was a kid, and easily one of my favorites, perhaps my favorite after Sonic The Hedgehog even. I'm still playing it today sometimes, and it was one of the first few ROMs I downloaded when I first got into emulation a few years back, in hopes of finally beating some of these classics from my childhood, since I couldn't beat any of them back then. Now I see that it's a simple experience overall, but still charming, I recommend it to anyone who loves Disney, Donald Duck or just good video games in general.

I've had the same experience, I distinctly recall it being much harder than it actually was. I suppose it succeeded as a children's game if you think of it that way.

I'm with you on that, the difficulty is perfect for this sort of IP, it's something that will offer a challenge to kids, while still being fair, and that adults can beat without too much trouble if they really put their minds into it, while still not being a walk in the park.

>> No.9038883

A masterpiece.
Only Sega and Capcom were able to make Disney games this good.
I played this game without really knowing english, so the adventure elements in it were even more challenging and mysterious for 9 year old me. I remember playing it on and off, making small progression, but always getting stuck, then by just exploring the game and going back to previous levels I could advance again. The game is pretty intuitive, just good game design.
I also often would die in the viking ship as other anons said, or in the antartic level, but I remember one day I was staying home from school due to sickness and it was that day that I spent a whole afternoon playing this game and finally beat it. This was before I ever played any adventure game, let alone any RPG or anything of the sort, until then I only played arcade-style action games, the most adventure I had played until then was Super Mario World, but Quackshot had that sort of metroid-style design that I never experienced before. I sure remember feeling proud of myself that day. Great memories.
And yeah I replayed it through the years and it holds up excellently.
