Pretty sure you just get along with the other artifacts won from the hero.

The only way it can be lost is if the hero gets lost - beaten from neutrals, retreated but not re-recruited from the tavern, or belonged to a kingdom that had no towns for a week. And even then, there is a small chance it'll turn up again in the tavern.

Is there any way to restart a scenario with different pre-game options? I'm playing the last scenario from the Spoils of War campaign and I realized I massively screwed myself over by choosing Stronghold over Fortress (the entire map is swampland). So the first four days for me usually goes

Gold is a scarce ressource early in the game, but in the late game it usually isn't enough to gain you one additional level 7 creature which are likely to die at one point or another. It is much better to hold a secondary town for a single day or hold an additional gold mine. Mid to late game XP far outweighs gold.

not really, by then you have a doomstack that will ravage most neutral creatures for free XP

especially late game, where you can get a lvl 1 hero to lvl 16 in no time by giving him accumilated creatures in some town and sending him for a walk on neutral creatures.

what's really going to boost your killing powers are the artifacts and +1 to attack/defence places.
