Does anyone else kinda hate "retranslation" projects? Whether it's a fan version that tries to have more serious dialogue, or be more accurate to the Japanese naming scheme, or even an official rerelease/remaster, there just seems to be something charming about the goofy writing in those old original translations. Kind of like watching an classic kung fu flic. I know some folks are gonna whine "it's just nostalgia, muh old good" but I really think games like JRPGs just play a little better when they're not taking themselves too seriously.

>> No.9021769

I don't get it either.
I think those people take video games too seriously.

>> No.9021812

I don't want to spend hours and hours and hours reading a story if I know it's translated poorly.

Not with that one
The original two BoF games had trash translations, the second one more so, a retranslation was necessary

>> No.9021824

I think it's noticeable even with a game that never had a translation at all; for example I'm recently finally getting into Final Fantasy III (FC), and it has a "well written" fan translation that just doesn't quite hit right after playing the original FF1 NES.

This , specially if it´s a story-heavy rpg game. BoF was hit with bad translation 2 specially since 1 was a bit serviciable (still shit though)

None of these stories are really "deep" enough to warrant super-serious style storytelling though. You can tell what's going on, the blue haired teen and his furry cat girlfriend have to punch the mean wizard, you aren't missing anything.

>> No.9021837

>>9021832
That's not what I mean. If a lot of the game is me sitting there and just reading shit then if it's translated poorly I don't want to read it. It's the fact that I'm spending hours reading a bad translation, not whether the text is deep or something.

>> No.9021841

>>9021837
But what defines "bad"? I'd say a boring, dry, "accurate" translation is bad.

No fuck off, I hate seeing retarded westerners butcher kino stories with their censorship and "humor."
People who think shitty old translations are good are simply blinded by nostalgia glasses. Nothing more nothing less.

>>9021769
I'm sorry that you only play games with shit stories.

If the substance of what is being said or the character itself has been purposefully changed to something else to suit the whims of the translator.

You're objectively wrong.
Accuracy is good. Clarity is good.
Bad translations are the equivalent of the Cecilia Giménez's debacle.

Really.
BOF2, 8/16-bit Final Fantasy games, Mana games... "kino stories"

JRPGs have bad stories and bad translations so there's no reason to play them at all IMO.

God this board has really gone down the shitter.
It's no longer about appreciating retro games, it's about grasping desperately to every last little ounce of your ever-distant childhood and screeching through your tears about how much better it was for no reason whatsoever.
We need a video game equivalent of the Rusty Brown comics to give these people a look in the mirror.

Criticize any retro game, no matter how mildly, and you're guaranteed to get some autistic manbaby to throw a tantrum over it.

It depends. I'll play the official translation for a first playthrough but I may go find a modern retranslation for a replay.
