I love these early pokemon adverts. I liked the commercials with the fat bus driver trapping them in a trash compactor. Later ads just had to coast on brand name alone instead of selling the idea of these games about weird little monsters.

And how about this bullshit that was in every game magazine for several years? They'd just update the "prizes" each time to keep current but you just know nobody ever won. There was even a Doug episode about this exact kind of scam.

https://doug.fandom.com/wiki/Doug%27s_Mail_Order_Mania

One problem with video games being so kid centric was that kids also made good marks for the scam artists out there so there was no shortage of shady bullshit.

kinda off-topic but are you old enough to remember Olympic marketing? They used to put ads in comic books showing all the "prizes" you would get for selling a certain amount of their merchandise. Basically they would recruit gullible kids to act as salesmen and instead of money pay them with merchandise from the company store at what i can only assume was a brutal exchange rate.

It seems so obvious now but when you were five years old and saw pic related it was very tempting.

I don't remember that in particular but I do remember the adjacent thing involving sending in proofs of purchase. It seemed like every product had a company catalog that you could "buy" stuff from. I remember Marlboro cigarettes of all things doing this and it wasn't suuuuper clear the products weren't intended not to be attractive to young teens. Like caps and jackets and stuff.

I used to get annoyed when cereals pulled that shit. If it was actually something good the item wouldn't be in the box but instead be a proof of purchase mail order thing. Color changing spoons and bowls that would melt in the dishwasher because they were made of GI Joe action figure plastic were common in the 90s. They'd also do that thing where the toy inside had a chance of being a special version that was more valuable but of course those were so rare they may as well not exist. I recall Cap'n Crunch having a magic 8 ball inside but if yours was gold instead of black it would win you $10,000.

Its amazing how we deliberately turn kids into rabid little gamblers like its normal.

>> No.9029464

>>9029457
That makes much more sense. I was wondering why Squaresoft was asking for resumes when it was Eidos that did the PC port. They must have figured it was more efficient to contract it out rather than build a completely new team in house. Too bad they didn't maintain that sentiment when it came time for The Spirits Within.

>> No.9029487

>>9029464
The only BTS info I can still recall is that the assets given to them were optimized for 640x480 and the eidos director asked for the originals to optimize for 800x600 and 1024x768. The Square manager replied "no one plays games higher than 480" and the Eidos producer asked "Have you ever played a computer game?" They never got the assets as far as I know.

>> No.9029497

>>9029487
I bet they didn't have original assets anymore were just trying to cover up having to admit they scrapped them once the game went gold. All these pre-rendered games, from Donkey Kong Country to Chrono Cross, the uncompressed renders are lost to time because nobody wanted to splurge on HDD space.

One thing I love about old print ads is how economical they had to be. You had to have some kind of thematic draw to attract people's eyes but also include enough specifics to inform them what it was they were trying to sell you. And that usually involved a few screenshots and some flavor text, which would be just enough to generate hype without overdoing it and deflating interest by talking your ear off like happens today with nonstop viral shit. You'd just stare at the ad and the handful of screenshots and just NEED to play the game to see it for yourself. Today you pretty much see someone play through the whole damn thing before it even launches.

Yup, it was an overcorrection to adapt to Sega's confrontational advertising. Nintendo was looking for an avenue to match and settled on Ren and Stimpy with a hint of Nickelodeon's slime focused stuff like Double Dare. Kirby and Mario made it through based on brand recognition but it hurt Earthbound a lot. The whole Play It Loud era was like a 90s time capsule where Nintendo took a hard turn toward the gross.

I think you're thinking of Sony or SEGA. Nintendo was pretty legendary about the lengths they would go to censor games. Remember; we have the ESRB because Nintendo threw SEGA under the bus during the video game senate hearings in the 90s and tried to claim that they were the only company not pushing violence and sex on children.

That ad has to be for Australia, because THIS was as edgy as NOA was willing to go back then:

No. What you mean is, these games have always been the most popular with women. Because more men than women play games overall, even if The Sims wasn't men's most popular video game, the sheer amount of men playing would still outnumber the women. This was the best selling video game of all time for years. Also the absolute majority of consumers of game magazines were men so it's natural that these ads would target them.

>> No.9044782

The Sims was so huge I have a hard time believing it wasn't a 50/50 breakdown or as close to it to be statistically insignificant. But there are a lot of games that draw more women than men. I don't know the breakdown but at least at a glance DDR and Kingdom Hearts stand out. Dating sims also seem to have a massive appeal to women. And while probably not being the dominant fanbase, DOA has a lot of female fans, probably more than Street Fighter and Tekken.

>(NoA) Oh those are sucessful with nerds, japanophiles, and teenagers looking for power fantasies. So it has dragons, swords, castles and women in revealing armour?

>(NoJ) No, it's a very original concept. The hero is just a little kid who walks around his neighborhood with his friends.

>(Noa) ah.

>(NoJ) There is another game where the hero can fly, and steal powers and weapons from his enemies. Swords, fireballs, wrestling moves.

>(NoA) Oh thank God. That sounds promising. New franchise?

>(NoJ) No, it's a Kirby game. You know, the cute little pink ball from Game Boy and Famicom.
