The exact moment when console games and arcade games fully diverged
Never before had their been such a huge, long, non-linear, secret-filled adventure in a video cartridge

Nah, console RPGs existed before this game. And score/arcade style games existed on consoles after this. So it doesn't slot into either end. Pitfall 2 would be the start of the divergence, and the 6th gen would be the breaking point.

is this nigga serious?

Metroid, Zelda and Castlevania II all predate SMB3.

Short game

Bad game

Zelda counts but it's an adventure game. Platformer games had majorly been the domain of arcade-type games until SMB3 came along

I love SMB3 but you're wrong. SMB3 was no more non-linear than Mega Man.
