The CRT blur helps the pixel art but if you're playing real hardware on a modern TV then it's likely getting blurred anyway due to bilinear filtering. If you like the look don't worry about it.

- The average LCD's built-in scaler will likely not handle 240p correctly, causing certain effects to not display correctly.
(This is most often seen in things that flash every frame, for example the flashing that indicates invincibility frames in most games.)
- If you want to use an external scaler, most don't handle switching between 240p and 480i instantaneously. Only the new and expensive RetroTink 5X and the DIY intensive GBS Control project handle this seamlessly. Not an issue for SNES, but a big issue for a lot of the PlayStation library.
- If you're using composite video, the CRT's screen will generally hide the ugliness and artifacts better than an LCD.
- Any old CRT will be 0 lag. You don't need some super specialized gamer model.
- Motion clarity is a given on CRTs. On flat panels there is black frame insertion that can somewhat improve this, but it's not a standard feature on any old LCD.

Input lag isn't really a problem on most games, once in a while you'll encounter something like this that won't work without a CRT. But for a good 90% of games you can play them on a flat panel fine. Just keep a CRT around for edge cases like these,

>> No.9002848

>>9002490
Won't really matter for PS1 games because most run at 30 fps anyway. Input lag is mostly an issue if the game is 60 fps (so basically no 5th gen games)

I had mentioned PlayStation for the case where both 240p and 480i are used in the same game. Dead simple for a CRT, not so much for an LCD.
Choices for LCD is live with incorrectly handled 240p with the built-in scaler, live with the signal cutting out with an older external scaler, or buy/build a scaler that can handle that transition seamlessly.
With a CRT you just plug it in and it works.

Modern panel latency, especially in gaming mode, is miniscule. This isnt 2007 anymore. As for converters, most people try to use the TVs default built on one which is garbage.
Check out the video above. With a proper setup you can get within 5-10 ms of CRTs. Usong a Wii or a MiSTer, you can use runahead or take advantage of the Wii being more responsive to make that back up

Just like hoarding 25 year old trash because its "objectively superior"?
It implies theres an "objective right" to filters at all. A filter is just a type of distortion. Is there an implication that authors intent is your SNES being distorted by a low end 90s RCA CRT tube is the only way?
In fact, no filter, at all, is also a completely acceptable answer here.
The only ground CRTs have is negligibly lower input lag which can be mitigated by better converters on modern TVs. The rest of the lag can be made up using more modern counterparts of hardware or hardware based emulation

Any modern LCD can easily compete with that

To each their own, though. There's definitely an increased CRT == 1337 gamer thing going on now, but they are different so just use your own judgement and try to separate that from the hype.
