Well, lately I've been going through the Game Gear library, and... it's just not very good. Most of the games are either ports from the Master System (infamous for its meager library), or inferior backports of Genesis games. There are a few gems, but only a few.
The Game Boy and Game Boy Color simply had better games.

It didn't really "fail" in the long run since it had a long run in the first place. It simply stopped being supported by Sega years in because it never surpassed Game Boy and they were suffering from ll their mid-90s stupidity that supporting more than one thing at a time wasn't feasible for a successor.

Nintendo figured out early on how to play to the strengths of the handheld medium which is why they’ve been dominant in that space for 30+ years now. All of their would-be competitors over the years attempted to sell to consumers using more powerful hardware as a draw, but it never worked out.

I understand a backlit screen and some extra horsepower eat up more resources than the game boy but it's running on triple the amount of batteries and still not giving you much mileage. GB started with a pretty low power system and they just made it tighter and more cost effective over its very long lifecycle. GBC was a very modest upgrade. GBA however was a new system with GBC guts compacted into it. Like many consoles with backwards compatibility. GBA was born over a decade later than the GB and in many ways resembled a stripped down PDA from the era.

The only game I replayed alot was Super Star Soldier. I ended up selling the whole lot for $250 in 2010. No regrets, I think the buyer probably feels the same way too. Sometimes collecting all this stuff just clutters the house. We had one kid at school with one of these, black kid that lived with his grandma who would buy him anything. One day while bragging about it I said I'd rather not have a daddy who's a crackhead.

It would inevitably still fail to make a foothold against the GBC for the same reasons the GG did. Too big, too expensive, terrible battery life, and a kneecapped game library because publishers and developers aren't going to drop support for the cheaper handheld that already outdid your previous outing's install base by a country mile. Even worse it would be competing with the already established WonderSwan and NeoGeo Pocket as well.

Not a chance in hell. Time and time again, Nintendo’s handheld competition has tried to compete with more powerful hardware and they always fail. Call me when the Steam Deck is on the shelf at Walmart next to the Switch/PlayStation/Xbox stuff.

Funny. We had two adaptors that you could recharge with electricity that was shaped so it could fit in its battery slots snugly.

I wonder if it would have done better if that was standard issue.

Capacitors don't last. Like anything man-made, without constant maintenance, the lifespan will degrade. Factors such as temperature, humidity, pressure changes, and just simply time can adversely affect how the Game Gear functions in the long run. Typically the first to go is the sound, but sometimes the screen. The failure rate is pretty high now because it has been that long.
