Well, lately I've been going through the Game Gear library, and... it's just not very good. Most of the games are either ports from the Master System (infamous for its meager library), or inferior backports of Genesis games. There are a few gems, but only a few.
The Game Boy and Game Boy Color simply had better games.

I'm still not clear on what the fuck could be going on in there to hoover up that much juice in so short a time. I understand a backlit screen and some extra horsepower eat up more resources than the game boy but it's running on triple the amount of batteries and still not giving you much mileage. It's one small screen and one small speaker. No laser, no hard drive, no wifi....where'd it all go? Blast processing? Was it just really, really inefficient?

I had one and also got every gameboy from the very first to the advance, excluding the pocket.
It's battery life was absolutely awful unless you wanted to spend all your time attached to wall, and at that point you might as well just play your fucking genesis.

Gameboy had this thing beat dead to rights because it could actually be played with real portability. It's limitations did not matter.

GB started with a pretty low power system and they just made it tighter and more cost effective over its very long lifecycle. GBC was a very modest upgrade. GBA however was a new system with GBC guts compacted into it. Like many consoles with backwards compatibility. Meh, I bought a turboexpress in 98 on ebay for $80 after s&h with Bonks Revenge. I also found stacks of NIB games at Pick n Save for $5. They were all crap games, bought them anyways. The only game I replayed alot was Super Star Soldier. I ended up selling the whole lot for $250 in 2010. No regrets, I think the buyer probably feels the same way too. Sometimes collecting all this stuff just clutters the house. I don't always emulate but the portables emulate so well on a cheap android with BT controller and no one can argue that the pixels need to be ran through a shader to be more authentic.

The Game Gear sold well in the time it was on market, multiple people had them, and the product made money. The Jaguar failed, the Saturn failed, the NGage failed. A portable console that moved like 15 million units in the 4-5 years it was relevant is not a failure

It would inevitably still fail to make a foothold against the GBC for the same reasons the GG did. Too big, too expensive, terrible battery life, and a kneecapped game library because publishers and developers aren't going to drop support for the cheaper handheld that already outdid your previous outing's install base by a country mile.
