Not by a long shot.

I never understood the hype behind this game. I played it for an hour or 2 and then dropped it because it felt too boring. Half life came out a year before and is miles ahead of this game in terms of fun, and half life is up there among the most important pc games of all time for sure.

It really didn't. It has the classic broken RPG system. The sound design beats out anything that exists today though.

Or Ultima Underworld because it led to wolfenstein which led to doom.

what an oddly circuitous way for you to justify your dislike of those games. if you don't like a game just say you don't like it faggot, don't pretend it's because of whoever is supposedly consuming it

Haters are going to hate.
However, it was a very influential game. "Most important PC game of all time" might be a bit too strong but you can't dismiss the game's influence.
Of note is that it was built on the same engine of Thief/Thief 2 and that the developers had a doozy of a time making certain things work given the constraints of the engine.
Should you play it? Absolutely. Just keep in mind that it's an older game and you'll do fine.

>> No.8999119

>>8998502
System Shock 2 is about as important as Deus Ex and Thief. Quite influential but way way less than games like Ultima Underworld, Doom, Quake and even Half-Life.

I like both of those games. They also happen to be promoted by e-celebs that zoomers watch, hence the reason there were so many of them suddenly sporting JC Denton avatars not too long ago.

I don't know, the game is just boring as hell to me. Half life is leaps and miles ahead of this in terms of gameplay, story, and atmosphere.
Wasn't bioshock supposed to be a spiritual successor to system shock? I think that game is way better than system shock itself too.

It's really hard to say which game out of Ultima Underworld, System Shock and System Shock 2 is the most important.

Ultima Underworld is directly influenced both all the subsequent games, the drive to make more 3D games, and also influenced Bethesda to make TES Arena. It's also rumored that Carmack saw an early version and was inspired by it. Measuring its impact is impossible

System Shock codified a lot of the systems that SS2 is really famous for, but nobody really played it. That being said, there's a saying "The first Velvet Underground album only sold 10,000 copies, but everyone who bought it formed a band." and I feel like that really applies to original System Shock, because it's clearly that game that influenced a ton of people who are in the industry now

System Shock 2 is easily the most accessible out of the three, save its somewhat terrible implementation of RPG mechanics that can fuck over inexperienced players hours into the game. It also trailblazed how to make horror games, though admittedly that bullet fired decades ago only fully landed with Alien Isolation. But the problem is System Shock 2 is really just System Shock in the Thief engine - a lot of what it added to the formula it got from Thief

I love the hell out of System Shock 2 but playing the games before it really made it clear to me that it wasn't that revolutionary. But holy fuck is its environment still something else.

>>9002791
funny thing is that underworld influenced carmack and the id guys to take a contrary approach by making their games fast and arcade-like with the smoothest graphics possible. They respected underworld but wanted to offer a different interpretation of first person dungeon crawling.

First one is way more open and metroidvania style to it where second one is just going level by level with you needing to backtrack to the engine level once. Shodan is 1000x better in the first game and is the only video game villain who feels genuinely threatening and she's completely tacked on in the second game. Second one's balance and RPG system is totally botched while the first game is way more open to experimentation.

Second one has way better sound design and is spookier though.
