Yeah, modern gamers seems to think of games as a vehicle to deliver "content" and view a challenge as nothing more than a gate in front of the next piece of content. The idea of a game where the challenge is the point, and the gameplay itself is fun from moment to moment, and just playing that, is alien to them for some reason.
I don't get it.

Oh my fucking god.
The complete lack of self-awareness in this post.
Pac-Man was the FIRST game to have new cutscenes as a reward for beating levels.
It created the very thing you are disparaging.

Are you really trying to argue the game was successful because it had short intermissions of simple characters and not because it had fun gameplay? What the fuck is wrong with zoomers

I always thought galaga was better, but pacman isn't bad either. The premise of being chased by ghosts is funny and the gameplay is fun.

No, retard.
It was successful because it had both.
Why do you think games like Head-On and Space-Chaser weren't colossal cultural hits like Pac-Man despite coming out first?
Why do you think the cultural icon for space invaders is an alien and not the tank you control?
Pac-Man had character. Tanks, cars and rockets don't.

Pacman was the longest developed game ever at 14 months when it came out. It had a level of polish in its mechanics that nothing else at the time did. The ghost being 4 colors didnt make it popular, them all having their own unique AI did.

If you swap cigs for cases of cheap beer that my bro working at the arcade let me bring in you have my teen years right fucking there. I spent probably twice my first year of college tuition on arcade games. Hell, even failed courses because I was such an addict.
