How exactly does the codec work? They establish that Snake can hear the other end by stimulating the bones of his inner ear, but the story has characters react to what is shown on the codec screen.

I didn't necessarily mean it had to be a localization oversight, just playing fast and loose with the reality of the script, not really thinking about whether it makes complete sense. I try not to assume that creators are as spergy some of their audience, even extremely talented creators.

Yeah that's interesting, but it could also be explained away because Snake was at a base where he was in-person with Campbell and Naomi. At that point, he could have seen Mei Ling or - if she wasn't at the base, I kind of remember her being at another site - he could have seen a picture of her in the briefing dossier.

It's a bit of a reach, but the script allows for it.

1. It's called Radio in Japan so it's even clearer just like previous games. CODEC is something Jeremy Blaustein came up with and it's a cooler name than what Kojima came up with, so it was backported into the Japanese sequels.

2. It's a little radio with a two way video camera. What you see on screen is literally what they see.

3. The cast makes multiple references to seeing each other.

I have no idea why people make a big deal about this when the game has psychics and mecha robots firing nuclear warheads. Is the idea of a two way video transceiver that unthinkable? Out of all the sci-fi tech that was one of the most grounded.

He only came up with the name because he literally didn't know what 無線/musen meant and thought it literally meant "wireless". It was a bit of a fluke, which is ironic when you consider how he used to always brag about knowing more about military shit than Kojima and his military advisor Motosoda Mouri.

IIRC in MGS2 Raiden and Snake are facing each other and yet they switch to codec communication for some reason. I always just assumed Kojima was being lazy with the cutscene but there's a legitimate reason?

>> No.8994862

>>8994820
It's probably a combination of both. Since most of the conversations in MGS2 are just two characters infodumping each other, they might as well save time from creating elaborate cutscenes by only rendering two talking heads.

It's also the least relevant to the plot and really has nothing to do with anything. Do people think Snake magically healing himself through rapid consumption and digestion of nutrients is a relevant aspect of the plot? Because eating rations for health has about as much impact on the plot as Codec's functionality and technical specifications do. It's like retarded fans of Dark Souls clamoring that X Y and Z bosses are actually Solaire cuz the game included a single one off reference to the guy. Not everything in a game is directly related to the plot, a lot of things are just simple concessions to make the experience better for the player.

Is Snake really eating an entire ration mid-combat to instantly heal gunshot wounds? Or is this a gameplay concession so the game is actually fun to play and you don't get an instant game over the second Snake's femur gets grazed by a bullet. Is Snake really having a 20 minute long conversation with a gameboy walkie talkie while armed guards are pointing guns at him, or is this handwaving so the audience can enjoy the story?

>> No.8995053

>> No.8995147

there no other explanation besides videogame dream logic. In universe it's treated like a micro earpiece but it has a camera interface no one ever acknowledges, and it magically stops time to allow snake to have drawn out conversations during close quarters combat.

>> No.8995325

>>8994862
Probably reading too much into it and the whole simulation aspect of it but it almost makes it seem like codec communication is completely virtual, that the characters aren't actually speaking but rather projecting their voice and mannerisms over the call.
Because if they're standing face to face yet choose to communicate over codec, there's no reason to use it unless they can talk without anyone overhearing.

Agness Kaku fucking sucks, that's true, but Jeremy Blaustein shouldn't get away scot-free either. There's no reason he couldn't just praise Agness Kaku or defend her translation without throwing that passive-aggressive dig at Kojima. Instead, he encourages her shitty behavior by acting like they're both better than the original writer. It's kinda ironic, considering Blaustein trashed MGS2's translation (without having even played it) on that Pushtotalk podcast, but decided to buddy-up with her after learning about their mutual dislike for Kojima.

If they want to brag about the fact that they came up with the name "codec" (even if it was a fluke) or they snuck-in some epic quips that weren't in the Japanese script, that's fine by me. But to pretend that they came up with the politics, themes and characters of MGS1-2 all of their own is laughable to anyone with a half a brain.

Makes me wonder if everything Guy Cihi said about Blaustein being so difficult to work, to the point that the Japanese Konami staff secretly hated his guts, could be true. It would also explain why redid the voice acting for Twin Snakes if he was shitty at signing contracts.

You've all got it wrong. Remember, this is Kojima we're talking about. Metal Gear Solid is meant to be a somewhat cheesy and funny but also serious 80's action movie where tropes, 4th wall breaking, and memorable one-liners are a given. That's why Psycho Mantis can shake your controller, and why Snake can "see" what you can see on the code, and don't forget the codec frequency on the back of the CD case. It's all a meta joke that film geeks like Kojima think is amazing, but it's really just stupid and takes you out of the game, if even just for a moment.

why do you bros over think this? It's just an updated version of the radio from MG2. Just imagine this thing but with a video display. The faces have video effects for a reason.

The codec screen was never meant to be this completely abstract thing. It's what the device actually looks like. It was not deemed important enough to actually model it in-game.
