Cyberlab's death to pixels shaders (not pictured) are fucking amazing....if you have a 4k scree AND sit TV distances from it. I really like the RGB PVM ones heh as but sitting at monitor viewing distances the effect is too strong for my eyes which is a shame.

Pic related is from the HSM mega bezel pack which cyberlab uses as a basis for his shaders.

More than that, the textures are just horrendously low-res (especially with N64, but honestly PS1 isn't that much better) and the 3D is just very low-poly. I'd rather not expose all that with hi-res rendering. Better to downsample from hi-res back to native for some anti-aliasing and throw a CRT shader on top IMO.

All CRT shaders are garbage and the shittiest meme in retro. Older games looked better on CRTs because they scaled better to their lower resolutions, not because of fucking scanlines, which were more like an unfortunate limitation of the technology at the time. The concept of purposely gimping your vision on a modern display by obstructing it with tiny lines to make the picture "better" is retarded, and all the zoomed in comparison pictures in the world probe absolutely nothing when normal sane people play with their eyes more than an inch away from the screen where it doesn't make a difference.

When you use a CRT shader, you're no different from that fat kid in that old Game Gear commercial that would impair his senses by hitting himself on the head so he could see color on his Game Boy.

What did you set ss.h_blend to?
For some reason having it disabled in RA makes the picture more blurry when using CRT shaders. This actually makes the Grandia save spots look like their have proper color gradients. It works as intended when I don't enable shaders though. It's just kinda weird.

>Some graphic designers toyed with these specificities and mastered the 0.5 dot technique. The word “pixel” translates in Japanese to “ドット” (”dot”). It seems that Hiroshi Ono (AKA Mr Dotman) was the first to use that word to describe his work, talking about dot-e (ドット絵, the “e” is the same as in “Ukiyo-e” and means picture) and dot character (ドットキャラクター or ドットキャラ) in the February 1983 issue of Namco NG. “It’s a technique where by slightly changing the color of surrounding pixels, to the human eye it looks like the pixels move by around 0.5 pixels.” explains Kazuhiro Tanaka, graphic designer on Metal Slug (1996). His colleague Yasuyuki Oda adds that “Back in the old days, we’d say [to our artists] "add 0.5 of a pixel”, and have them draw in the pixels by taking scanlines into account. But with the modern Full HD monitor, the pixels comes out too clearly and too perfectly that you can’t have that same taste.“

sgenspt-mix. It is slightly destructive on the art but thats whats going to happen when you blur the image, whether it be through shaders like this or good ol' composite. I prefer this method because its flicker free & keeps the colors vibrant.
>>8996847
You're mostly wrong but it is true that zoomed in screenshots like you see on CRTpixels are misleading. Raw pixels don't look near as bad when viewed from a distance, the differences are subtle unless you use a really heavy shader (like CRT-Royale-XM29's color warping & bloom, or NTSC shaders).

Even with that your screen needs to get really, really bright. Mine hits something like 500 cd/m2 and those megatron shaders are still waaaaaaay too dark. I honestly don't know what sort of SDR screen can go bright enough.

Tip: Adjust beam spot power in CRT-Royale.
This is one of the most important settings.
It controls the level at which point you will see individual dots along a line of pixels. If it is too high you will erase single pixel dots in the image. This scrubs away fine details.
Bring up a screen with lots of little single pixel details.
My favorite is Cammy's stage in Super Street Fighter II Turbo. This is a very good stage to test a lot of features in the image.
You will need to adjust your gamma setting before addressing beam spot power setting. Then go back and forth between them until you are getting a good contrast with lots of detail.
All of the above is directed towards an RGB image to start, but will also affect s-video, composite, and RF.

Nah, the resolution is off. If he were to play a fully 2D game you would see sprites stretching like they do on the UI. This is why royale and guest for reshade are hard to use. They don't scale properly.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gamma_correction

Think of gamma as a type of non-linear contrast adjustment. You need good gamma to have good contrast and color saturation.

There's a likely chance that whatever game you'd pick to play in an emulator that it will look better after gamma correction is applied because of way different displays handle the image. This could happen even if you were using a PC CRT monitor.

Gamma choice can be dependent on the lighting conditions of your room.

If you boost brightness and saturation too much then you'll get clipping. HDR gives you more headroom to work with as opposed to SDR.
I do agree its a meme but for a different reason: HDR wears out your OLED and using it make retro games brighter is a really silly use. QLED does support HDR but that has problems of its own (poorer black levels & motion clarity). Just accept a slightly dim image or buy a CRT.

I got an hdmi to component adapter so I could hook my gtx 1060 pc up to my samsung CRT TV. I thought it'd be as easy as nvidia control panel custom resolution, but nothing I do works. I tried custom resolution utility but it doesn't work. I have no clue what I'm doing wrong.
Most frustratingly, I actually -can- get nvidia control panel to display a correct image...Only during the test dialog. Soon as I click yes, it flickers and then it goes back to not working.
I'm at wits end. If I could just force nvidia control panel to not do whatever the FUCK it's doing after it tests the resolution it'd work fine.

These settings work until the test dialog finishes and then it's back to a jumbled mess.

Here is what I mean. The bubble is blinking tonsimulate transparency and it gives a strange grid effect. It's not THAT visible in the picture because it's a motion induced effect but the camera still captured it a little. Is my panel the problem?

i dont understand the issue
can you printscreen it

>> No.9030696

>>9030585
It doesn't show up in screenshots, it kiiinda shows up in the picture because of exposition. On the bubble with dr light's head, you can see part of the mask with a more intense color, in a regular pattern. In actual motion, this forms an ugly square grid of thin grey/black lines, on any object that is blinking, or transitioning colors rapidly (prominent in screen fades for example). I am thinking maybe it's a scaling issue...maybe I should try to stretch the image a bit. I use integrer scale and overscan.

do you have afterglow in your shader preset?

Incorrect uneven resolution or aspect ratio and you need to set the refresh rate correctly or have a VRR display to get the correct flashing effect

>> No.9031128

Doubt it's afterglow since some shaders with prominent masks have or don't have it and it does it with all of them as long as masks are decently visible. I will try resize and maybe different hz tonight. I play with ULMB (strobing) at 60hz so can't use gsync and shit but I'll try just to see if it's the issue. I'm guessing it's the resolution since I also get shimmering. I just use 4:3, maybe I'll stretch it horizontally or some shit. The masks are pretty as fuck but give me trouble.

Maybe an easymode or something.
I'm not sure since I tweak the shit out of everything.

I love how these threads are people going out of their way to make screenshots showing off their shaders, and then the lazy people come in and go "shit shader would NEVER use"

Why do I have thick (like 1cm thick) lines of black going from left to right when trying to use CRT Royale with N64?

Easymode. Simple, clean, looks decent out of the box, and even works well without integer scaling.

>> No.9031672

>>9031624
First of all, CRT-Royal ain't that good anymore. Try guest-advanced instead. Second of all, what plugin are you trying to use with it? Increasing internal resolution can fuck with the shader.

Acer predator xb272. Bought it cause it's one of the 27 inchers that can be hacked for single strobe, which is really nice.

So I tried bumping up afterglow, different scaling options, gsync, gsync at 120hz, different values etc, still the same thing. Guess I'll just have to live without prominent masks.

Here's a better pic of the issue, Every one of those vertical lines on light's face actually appears black IRL. It's weird. Ah well, some shaders look good even without prominent masks.

Do you happen to know what the subpixel structure of that monitor is? RGB, BGR, etc.? That can fuck masks up if you don't set them up correctly, since they rely heavily on subpixel behavior.

Seems to be RGB and v-RGB according to this

Pretty sure it can only be one of those, anon, not both.

Anyway, I just researched a bit, and it's a TN panel, which is not ideal at all. They tend to fuck up colors quite a bit. It could also be it doesn't like the way the mask manipulates details at the subpixel level. Some time ago I tried a shader that worked just fine on my 1080p IPS panel on a small shitty 1080p TV I had lying around, and it completely murdered the mask emulation, like it didn't know what to do with the alternating patterns so it just shat out some dull muted colors.

IIRC it just overlays light scanlines and a light mask with a bit of blur. At the very least the scanlines should be there.

What about filters that would make composite dithering work? Really annoys seeing individual pixels instead of the dithered shade
Also thanks for your help, filters are new territory for me

>> No.9032473

>>9032461
There's various ways to go about it. Some emulators/cores have NTSC filters built-in which you can enable to work alongside your shader of choice. They'll usually do the job for the purpose you bring up, but I personally have issues with how they degrade the image overall (not to mention they're not actually as accurate to real hardware as so many people like to proclaim they are). There's also NTSC shaders which will work with anything, but you have to either use a shader preset that already has one, or else add it yourself. I do not know if there's a premade NTSC+Easymode preset, though they do exist for crt-geom, crt-guest-drvenom, and others. Lastly, there's dithering blend shaders such as gdapt and mdapt that you can try combining with a CRT shader, which will attempt to blend dithering without resorting to blur or composite artifacts.

It seemed to me it met both conditions on the website, maybe cause it can be rotated.

Yeah it could be just a flaw of the panel. It's pretty alright otherwise. Single strobe is really really nice. Much less brightness loss than bfi. And the monitor doesn't lag that badly when put in 60hz unlike the benq I have. The masks that emulate high TVL displays work just fine. They're barely visible tho so I lose that "retro" effect. I also like yaving 27 inches, makes me really feel like I'm playing on a nice TV.
Guess in like two years I may get something that does 4k and single strobe and works better.
Launching dark souls remastered on single strobe is really something else. Or any 3D 60 FPS game. Love it.
