Marble zone could've been a great stage if it wasn't for the "Stop & go" concept they gave for its level design imo.

imo it is a great stage. I love it, and prefer its design to the "hold right & jump occasionally" one a lot of platform levels employ.
Visual aesthetics, music, hidden rooms and passages, multiple routes, hazard variety, all top notch.

Sonic Classic Heroes made me really appreciate what Sonic 1 could have been with a few more characters to open the stages up a bit more. The speed you can do some of the stages by switching to Tails, Knuckles, or using the abilities from later games as sonic makes them really fun.

as an aside, is there some reason people choose sonic 1 to mod over 2 and 3?

There has been a lot of sonic stuff lately that probably rubbed off and made people nostalgic.
>Boom got the complete Blu-ray and was advertised a bit on Amazon
>Sonic 2 (movie) released, had lots of marketing, and sounded pretty good
>Ugly Sonic returned (though in a shitty manner) and was all over the internet

The Boom blu-ray is what finally got me to give the older games a play.

marble zone would have been perfectly fine if it was the fourth stage instead of the second. the problem is that it feels like shit to start sonic 1, breeze through piss easy emerald hill zone, and then slam directly into marble zone and end up thinking "how badly do i actually want to play this game?"

>> No.8991801

>>8991270
The stage is designed around that concept. To get rid of it, you would need to redesign the entire stage from the ground up.

It's like saying "World 2-2 would be a great stage if not for the water."
That IS the stage.

>> No.8992224

Sonic 1 is a simple game whose source code is documented very well. I'm not too sure about the second game, but the third game has some notable spaghetti code which is difficult for hackers to get rid of

>> No.8992261

Am I the only one who is surprised at the amount of hate Marble gets? I don't remember people shitting on it back in the day, in fact it was a cool ass stage with an underground temple and sick synthpop music. Everyone loved Marble Zone.
The much more beloved Sonic 3 & Knuckles which everyone like to say it's the greatest, has a lot of actual slog stages like Marble Garden, Carnival Night or Sandopolis Act 2. Marble Zone can also be done pretty quick if you don't suck, the devs also added shortcuts if you want to skip chunks of the level, you just need to find them (or use a guide like a scrub that you probably are if you're bitching about based Marble Zone)

Ah, figured something like that might be the case considering people make entire game overhauls with Sonic 1, but when it comes to 2 and 3 you rarely even get character swaps. Guess that makes Pink Edition and the Sally hacks a bit more impressive considering those people had to deal with the spaghetti code to make them work.

I always end up damage boosting through the lava sections that I can't platform over. A few of them you can just jump on the blocks if you've got enough speed, but there's a section or two where you have to ride the block and I usually just use the temporary invulnerability to run through the lava when I can
>>8990313
Have you even played them? Literally the only other example of tedious waiting I can think of in the mainline Genesis Sonic games is the pulley lifts in Mushroom Hill Zone, and that's only for brief segments as opposed to Marble Zone
