A mysterious explosion destroys the Chernolton research facility near Moscow. Lucifer Alpha, a powerful biological weapon under secret development there is released into the atmosphere, creating a deadly biohazard. Carried by the trade winds, Lucifer Alpha spreads through out Eastern Europe and Eurasia, destroying 80% of the populace. Half of the world's people die. The greatest biohazard in history later simply becomes known as "The Catastrophe". But at this time who could have possibly imagined that the ultimate biohazard wouldn't occur for another half century.

50 YEARS LATER

mankind faces its greatest crisis, the appearance of a mysterious android life form. It's purpose and origin are unknown. Is it a new kind of weapon? Or perhaps an invasion from some other world. They appear during winter killing humans, and infiltrating society by taking the place of their victims. Employing an artificial skin, they can sweat and even bleed. Part organic, part machine - they're almost impossible to distinguish from those they kill. As they steal their victims' bodies in order to take their place, these mysterious invaders become known as "snatchers".

How was work? Was everything okay?

Mmmmm.... Gillian, what is it? What's wrong?

Jamie... I've become a J.U.N.K.E.R.
A JUNKER? Gillian, but why?

Jamie, you know why. It's the only way we can regain our lost memories.

"Snatcher" is the only word that keeps coming back every time we try to remember our past. I have to face them to find out why.

Yes, but I can sense that there is something terrible hidden in our past, and if we remember it, it will destroy us!

Gillian Seed, estimated age, 31. Three years ago, him and his wife, Jamie Seed are taken into custody in the Siberian Neutral Zone by the 17th Siberian Investigative Force. Both Gillian and Jamie suffer from severe amnesia - their memories prior to being picked up in Siberia lost in a mysterious mental fog. Two years ago, after a vain attempt to rebuild their marriage, Jamie and Gillian separate, following extensive special military training, Gillian is ordered to report to Neo Kobe City as a J.U.N.K.E.R. - effective today.

I've never really understood how shit like this is supposed to be undetectable.
Like they've got metal in em, no? Just xray em or slap a magnet to the side or something. You should be able to detect pretty easily that this shit ain't organic.
With something like Blade Runner least it makes sense since they're supposed to be fully organic albeit synthetic.

There are differences, such as less censorship, and the ending cutscene has some noticeable differences.

Anyone have any memories of this game from when it came out? Playing it, seeing it in store, hearing/reading about it?

>> No.8987889

Only recently played this for the first time. Shockingly good, although I am a sucker for cyberpunk and koji. I did not expect as many twists and turns as there were, always thought it was just a stock blade runner story clone. It was such an enjoyable experience - sincerely wished it was longer.

The game explains that people cannot be scanned or x-rayed to see if they are a snatcher or not without a warrant.
It's stupid, but it's not as dumb as the Voight Kampff test.

A friend of mine let me borrow it and moved and never asked for it back. He never played it anyway, he was literally autistic and would just throw his game discs/carts in the closet with his wrestling figures and other shit instead of putting them back in the boxes.

It's from Tomiharu Kinoshita's Twitter account. He has made various tweets about Kojima's original plans for the canned sequel to the PC-8801 and MSX2 version of Snatcher.

why is the VK test dumb? replicants were basically living creatures, the only other way to spot one would probably be to dissect it and you can't do that to a suspect

Aha so this is the person who did the art for Snatcher and Policenauts. I’ve been meaning to look for the character artist for years.

>> No.8989363

>>8989029
Yeah it always made sense to me, they have the emotional response to the questions a child of the approximate age the replicants actually are would have, so instead of just taking the question as the hypothetical it is, they get emotionally invested.

didn't have a SegaCD when this game was released (though I'm pretty sure I had a Genesis Model 2 at that point) but I followed game coverage in magazines at the time. Game looked like nothing I'd ever seen before, like back-to-back Ninja Gaiden cutscenes instead of traditional stages. I was intrigued, to say the least.

I did eventually get a copy myself (CiB!), along with a CDX (early eBay years was a gold mine) for probably not-that-reasonable a price but it was worth it.

So at the start of the game are snatchers unknown, then? I.e. the game is about one (or both) of the first ones?
>following extensive special military training
