Well casette seems like a French word for case, right? A small case. I think the full correct term was "casette tapes" for vhs tapes or those common audio tapes - the tape being the magnetic tape and the casette being what it was held in. Over time some shortened it to "casette" and others shortened it to "tape".

So "casette" as a term for videogame cartridge makes no sense. If it is indeed a proper Japanese term for it then it must have gotten that way from how if enough people of authority use something enough times it tends to become "correct".

Sounds like tape makes no sense, and casette makes total sense because it's a small case for the data storage medium.

It's the casette with the tape that you have. The term "cartridge" is a sort of all-encompassing term so if anything casette tapes could also be called cartridges.

Cassette refers to the plastic shell containing magnetic tape, not tape itself. You can adapt that terminology to games with cassettes referring to plastic shell containing PCB with ROM chips.

This. Cassette is a French word for small case. When it was first coined hundreds of years ago in France the only small cases in existence were VHS tapes and audio tapes. And tape didn't exist until it was created for cassette tapes. There are famously fossils of dinosaurs who died listening to cassette tapes on their walkmans. So it makes no sense to call it a cassette.
Yes. Zoomies really are this retarded.
