I dont get why people make fun of this. At the time that was a pretty detailed and good looking model for a real-time game.
Same with the "Playstation can produce amazing effects" one. King's Field was a PS1 launch title, so that was some of the first polygonal 3D gaming people had seen.

I don't either.
I also disagree about quake though. It's great, but I don't think it's perfect, and I prefer Unreal. Unreal gets off to a slower start though.
Honestly though they're not great to compare outside of MP. Single player they were going for different things, and both succeeded individually. I guess that's why the which-is-better argument continues to this day.

Unlike Unreal?
Epic knew they developed a great looking (and sounding) engine and they made sure to show it off as much as they could. The actual content and level design? Eh. Everybody seem to remember that waterfall and drawing distance though.

Boomer shooters lost something magic at the release of Quake. Stuff like Doom and Duke are still a hell of a lot of fun to pick up for the first time today, whereas Quake/Unreal are "you had to be there"-type stuff. Don't care if I've enraged any boom-booms by saying this, I am correct.

And also >>8988653 they were great games *at the time*, but the equivalent of un-buttered toast today. You can't say that about Doom or Duke. Quake and Unreal are both tech-demos first, games second. That's completely fine, I can't and won't argue against their influence. But that doesn't make for a very interesting experience, 20 years later. Doom, on the other hand, is still an incredibly distinct experience, head-to-toe. There's a reason that Classic Doom has seen resurgences over and over, while Quake continues to play second fiddle with "did you know the soundtrack was done by Trent Reznor?".

I did not play Unreal back when it came out nor did I play Unreal Tournament for some reason (I mostly played Quake). So I checked both out in recent years; UT99 is fantastic, slightly better than Quake Arena. Unreal 1 starts off nicely, with good aesthetic and interesting progression. Then you realize that every enemy just strafes wildly until you fill up his damage quota so he croaks over. Unreal goes over into the Half-Life territory but doesn't have Valve's knack for creating setpieces - not even with that hallway lights shutdown scene. I found its gameplay to be really shitty and got bored after a few hours. If anything the game is overrated.

Except for monster count, monster variety and map variety, sure. Obviously the build games would be in the earlier (i.e. more interesting) camp, I'm talking about shift in trends, I'm not *literally* saying that everything fell apart on a given date. You can't call what I'm saying "incoherent" if that's what stumping you lol. If you think what I'm saying is "waxing poetic", that's on you, dipshit.

This is on me - I didn't make it clear enough that I'm not specifically talking about vanilla Doom on DOS. I'm talking broad strokes, classic Doom as a whole vs classic Quake as a whole, including mods and any modern bells and whistles. If someone had never played either and wanted to play one today, they'd almost certainly pick Doom, and that's not just because of brand-recognition, it's just more interesting than Quake. That's my point.

I got this game for free on GOG, reinstalled it about 3 times. I really wanted to give it a fair shake, but I've been dragging my feet through the first quarter of the it (Terraniux Underground). Does the gameplay get any different or do I have to expect more of the same? I'm bored out of my mind and I don't really care about "getting it" anymore. I'm sure people really love Unreal to death, that it's the greatest achievement in human history, and everything else is pointless crap for uneducated idiots; fair enough, but I really don't think it's for me. Should I just give up now or does something amazing happen and the remaining 3/4 are any different? (Genuine question since Quake IV gameplay is frustrating until you get the strogg treatment).

Drop it. If you don't like it, then it's not for you.
The main features of Unreal (weapons with two fire modes, the landscapes, enemies you have to use different methods and attacks to deal with, looking out for secrets, etc) have been shown to you at that point and the only thing to look for from there is harder fights, be them groups of enemies or bosses. And the exploration coupled with the music — at least that's what hooked me to it a couple of years ago when I replayed it.
Maybe you're feeling burned and putting it down or playing it later at a lower difficulty could help you, but I'll spoil a bit for you if you want to stop there: you explore a temple, a wrecked terran ship, more temples and canyon passes; you infiltrate Skaarj facilities and their mothership. You deal with more Skaarj, you fight Alien Satan in a cave and at the end you kill their queen, just to escape and end in a 'cliffhanger' for Return to Na Pali, which is more of the same but with human forces butting it.
