In all honesty, I love it. When I was a kid, I hated it because it wasn't anything like the games, but as an adult, I really appreciate its unique interpretation of the series. I love how it's full of all kinds of weird, twisted little references and callbacks. Someone on /v/ summed up the movie perfectly: it's like they took one of those alternative fan art Mario pictures and based a movie around it.

All of the sets doesn't have relation with mushroom kingdom or Mario franchise. Except protagonist have somewhat of related clothes with the art Mario recognizes as him own past. And inclusive the colors aren't correct in some respect. And that HAT, doesn't have the correct design of characteristic M or L. Really that piss me off.

Y'know, that's a really interesting observation. People are quick to praise alternate art as being interesting, bizarre interpretations of existing media, but at the same time, will be extremely critical of things like the Super Mario Brothers movie. I really don't understand why.

Maybe it's due to the fact that they'd consider it foolish or irresponsible to try to adapt such a work to film, but, then, isn't SMB indicative of that? They couldn't directly or simply adapt Mario to film, so they went with something bizarre and more suited to the medium. Are they opposed to the interpretation, or adaptation?

I'm going around in circles here, aren't I? Ah well.

Even when not related to Mario, you gotta admit that the premise is fucking awesome. The meteor that wiped out the dinosaurs created a parallel dimension where the dinosaurs survived and evolved into humans, as opposed to our reality where humans evolved from primates. That's just a damn cool concept.

An interesting movie, to say the least. It's basically impossible to adapt Super Mario Bros. to live-action without it coming off as either surreal or cartoonish. The one thing that I always liked about the movie were the Koopas. Something about tiny heads and huge bodies always struck a chord with me as being fun.

A neat post-Bladerunner sci-fi movie that borrows some ideas from Mario. I don't know what people were expecting from a film based on Mario, but it obviously wasn't this. I loved it as a kid, and I like it now. Is it remotely close to the source material? No. Is it an acceptable adaptation of the source material? Sure. Why not. It's not like there was much to go off of.

I caught it on TV one time when I was 12. I thought it was amazing, and we actually watched it in class a few weeks later. Everyone was shitting on it out loud while I sat there and let them like a little bitch.

I love it. Funny one-liners, epic Dennis Hopper being a cartoonish dick. And it has the best acting I've seen in any video game adaptation ever. I'd love to be proven wrong.

Many a pleb will tell you that Super Mario Bros. is a bad movie, or even a bad adaptation. The reality is that it is simply too good of an adaptation for most audiences to handle.

The truth of this fact is evident in any piece of Mario fanart you can find on the internet. What is the content? A dystopian Mario, a cyberpunk Mario, a hyperrealistic Koopas and Goombas Mario, a Mario that represents a communist uprising.

These artists pretend that they are innovators, but what they simply won't admit is that they stole the brilliance from visionary directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel. They saw straight to the heart of the franchise and realized the potential it held, and from it they crafted the perfect film.

You can turn the Super Mario Bros. movie into something that looks incredibly faithful to the games, but still have nearly the exact same dialogue.

Make King Koopa and all the people in “Dinohattan” look like they do in the games: highly evolved dinosaurs would look like Koopa Troopas.

Instead of it being the Mushroom Kingdom, call it SarasaLand, (which is were Daisy is from in the games anyway)

Make Lena into Wendy Koopa, Spike into Lemmy Koopa, and have Iggy, Wendy, and Lemmy be referred to as Koopa’s Kids.

Make all the “Goombas” either Super Big Goombas, Buzzy Beetles, and/or Dry Bones

Change Big Bertha into a BoomBoom (but still technically be a big black woman)

Those jumpy shoes are now Kuribo’s Boots.

Name Mario’s girlfriend Pauline.

Have baby Daisy not come out of an egg, but out of a ?Block at the beginning.

Make Scapelli into Foreman Spike from Wrecking Crew, with his cronies being Wario and Waluigi.

Have Scapelli turn into Donkey Kong when hit with the de-evo ray.

Koopa turns into Giga Bowser when he’s hit by the de-evo ray

Yoshi is baby sized

I think it's a bad movie and has always been highly popular as a classic bad cross-medium movie. I also think it's growing in popularity again thanks to the retro boom in the industry, and is largely seen as a classic, good movie.

They movie is made even more interesting due to it's cultural interpretation of Super Mario. Imagine being a kid in 1993 and the only exposure you've had to Super Mario was the North American cartoons and the video games. The film wouldn't exactly replicate any of these works, but it would be more in common with them than with the later, more Japanese, games and cartoons.

What I'm trying to say is that those who find the movie disappointing probably didn't see it when it was released and didn't grow up with the Americanized Super Mario.

Having watched it as a kid with an unclouded mind I found it to be quite good. The fact that many people didn't like it because it "wasn't like the game" I considered weird. It's a live-action movie, how can it resemble a NES game? There were a lot of details borrowed from the game, and it was quite enough.

It's obviously not a triple A film, but it's nowhere near as bad as it is frequently made out to be (Generally speaking. Not on /vr/). It certainly doesn't cause me to smash the remote the way supposedly good shit like Tropic Thunder does.

In all honesty, gimmick aside, it's fucking terrible. Believe it or not, it has even less to do with the games than the movie does. Here's what it shares in common with the games:

Of course, there was the obvious lack of appearance by Kabal and Stryker ("WE HAVE CAPTURED TWO OF EARTH'S GREATEST WARRIORS") and that disappointing ending, but still, I like both.

One thing I've been thinking about is people say this isn't accurate to the games, but back then what was accurate to the games? In one game Mario was climbing scaffolding to stop a barrel throwing ape, in one game Mario was demolishing a building, in one game Mario was the referee in a boxing match, thats not mentioning driving go-karts, playing tennis etc. There wasn't really much consistency to begin with when you think about it. If anything, they did a pretty good job of making sense of the insanity they were adapting.
