You're right, there is no hidden meaning. Dracula is very openly stating that despite being so smart and powerful and supernatural he still can't understand lowly humans because they don't follow rules. It's one of the most universal themes from Ancient Greece to Tolkien and beyond. The world is huge, man is small, and fights against forces beyond his comprehension, but these forces are also bound by rules and limitations.
I understand that academia tends to over analyse stuff in ridiculous ways but this is very much in the open in this case.

>> No.8976494

Imagine reading Bram Stocker's Dracula and not understanding/acknowledging the symbolism. Completely missing the point.

Though obviously some academics theories are absolutely crazy and pants on head retarded, like that famous one claiming Dracula is gay. He literally has a small harem in his castle for christ sakes (or rather, satan's sakes?).

Originally Dracula was used to symbolize the fears of a specific culture at a specific time. Victorian era British were afraid that their world was going to hell with strangers coming to their country to fuck everything up (which Dracula does) and women having sex before marriage and loving multiple men. All the women doing that in Bram Stocker's get killed, and the only woman that survives is the respectable old fashioned, married and loyal one.

Later on Dracula was adapted to the fears of the current times at the time of the new works, this is why for instance the cross does not work anymore against Dracula in the Coppola version, christianity not having a key role in society anymore, there is no reason it should be considered the "good that saves against evil".

The Castlevania games, despite literally being called Dracula in Japan, don't really make any use of that. I think they missed the point because the themes of ANY adaptation never cattered to their culture, which is why they use and only reference the cosmetic aspect of things and instead use much simpler and classic tropes of "good vs evil", and focus on the "cool" aspect of the fights like in Vampire Hunter D.

He's half-right, and it's what I like about this particular conversation. Looked up various translations to Rondo's ending, putting it together with SoTN's original English beginning strikes me as an argument between the overly pessimistic Dracula and the too optimistic Richter. Even in Rondo, Richter doesn't seem to even consider the possibility that humans can be evil on their own before telling Dracula that basically everything is his fault and he should die, citing a sort of common faith between all of humanity revolving around precious love, respect and honor pushing them forward rather than Dracula's claims to greed and desire for power.
Dracula, whether he's super confident in Rondo or fucking furious in SoTN, is right to call bullshit on this; he wouldn't be coming back time and time again if humans weren't calling him back, and they wouldn't be calling him back if they were in fact good-natured. Richter brushes off power, but Dracula seems to understand that power IS important, even if he himself abuses the everloving shit out of the power he amassed through illicit means, a fact Richter can't look past. Dracula's own issue, though, is that he thinks this is all that defines humanity, and indeed, is all that should define humanity, as a way of life. Richter is right to point out that everyone living like that would just lead to complete, mutual destruction, and further, Dracula probably doesn't even recognize the possibility that people can choose good and righteousness over evil and wickedness and actually have it pay off, at that, and it doesn't help that he has Richter "humans are le good now excuse me while I go get brainwashed" Belmont to talk to instead of say, Simon. It's fitting, then, that Alucard of all people would have to step in and sit both their asses down, being better able to live out both sides of the argument.

Translations are an interesting thing. People of course dislike it when they know the translator has altered the text. Though when they don't know this occurred they don't necessarily have a problem with the translated text in itself. And there tends to be a common occurrence in which the Japanese original text is bland as fuck, so it's not surprising that translators try to make it read more strikingly. Personally I don't mind the text being jazzed up a bit as long as the substance of what's being said isn't lost. I want something that reads enjoyably in English.

>A quick look shows that the “What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets.” line wasn’t really in the original text. In fact, the English text strays quite a bit from the Japanese version. The original text is actually extremely common, standard-sounding stuff in Japanese entertainment. But this hamfisted use of love, respect, faith, and togetherness comes across a bit cornier when put into English. It’s hard to explain, I guess it’s a cultural difference.
>In any case, I’m guessing that the localizer picked up on this and tried to rephrase the text a little while trying to maintain the general point of the lines – that Dracula isn’t fit to lead humankind. The localizer’s good intentions sort of fell flat when it came to the voice acting, but then again this was the 90s, when serious localization and serious voice acting was just getting started.
