8969813 No.8969813 [Reply] [Original]

I'm coming to the end of my first playthrough of the game. Based on some reading, I elected to play the original Playstation version rather than the PC or Dreamcast port. My impressions aren't based on nostalgia, I'm coming into this pretty fresh.

Everything about this game is striking. The presentation is incredible for the PSX. The art direction is superb, and the texturing and lighting is some of the most polished on the system. Technically the game is a marvel, with open world streaming, and shifting between the two planes being particular technical achievements. Top notch voice acting helps elevate a compelling story, and the worldbuilding is well done. The dynamic between Raziel and the other characters in the story is great, and the setting of decaying Nosgoth is fantastically realized.

The frustrating part is the controls and combat. Movement is digital only, with lots of warm-up frames in the animations, making everything feel clunky and disconnected. Gliding is imprecise, and the specific way directional input is implemented means that the platforming is atrocious. There was one boss fight that involved precise jumping between pillars that took me a lot of attempts, just due to the rough controls.

Combat is very basic, with a few ways of taking out extremely passive enemies. There is a combo or two, but the vampires you fight can easily be avoided or dealt with and only function as minor stage hazards. There are also a few boss fights, with each one needing a specific trick to defeat them.

The real meat of the game is the environmental traversal and puzzles. While there is the occasional block puzzle or two, a lot of the progression requires clever lateral thinking combined with smart use of the plane shifting. This was my favourite aspect of the game, and finding some of the hidden areas really surprised me.

One last thing to mention. It feels like the PSX is barely able to manage running this game. Framerate drops are constant and the draw distance is abysmal. While I am satisfied with the platform I chose to play it on, it's definitely worth taking a look at the PC and Dreamcast ports if you decide to play this game.

Glad you enjoyed it, anon. I got to play it when it first came out and it was really impressive a the time, although like you said it was more to do with the world and design than the gameplay, which was always kind of clunky. The story and voice acting especially were on another level.

This was really the first game I remember besides Metal Gear Solid that really felt "cinematic" at times and for me the story was even better because of the gothic horror and lovecraftian elements which were so different from the sort of story you'd get out of Zelda or FF. Although I was a little cheesed that it ended on a cliffhanger that didn't get resolved until the next console generation.

Any anons read Brian Lumley's Necroscope books? The ones that that took place on the vampire homeworld had a very LOK vibe to them.

Oh, my decision had nothing to do with picking the most technically superior version. I would have just emulated the Dreamcast port if that was the case.

I was just really interested in how the technical limitations of the PSX would shape the experience, and I also dig the gritty pixels and dithered aesthetic. The dynamic music is also nice to have as well. I also wanted to try experiencing it the same way most people played it back in the day, chunky pixels and all.

There's still so many unanswered questions in this series.

Why did Moebius allow Vorador to slaughter the Circle?
How did Turel end up in Avernus?
Why wasn't there a temporal distortion when Kain encountered Janos?
How is Vorador still alive?
How high do the Pillars reach into the sky?
What happened to the Elemental Fonts?
Who is the Seer? Was she a vampire or a Hylden?
Why did Moebius build the Eternal Prison?
Are there lands other than Nosgoth?
Why doesn't future Ariel remember Raziel?
Was the Sarafan Lord the same Hylden who possessed Mortanius and Janos?
If Ariel was absorbed to become the Spirit Reaver, how is she still in the future?
How did Kain survive the removal of the Heart of Darkness?
Why didn't the Elder God consume Janos' soul in the five hundred years between his death and resurrection?
Does the Elder God exist out of time since he claims to have resurrected Raziel in the future and speaks with him in the past like he's already met him?
Could Kain cause a paradox if he ever fought with his younger self?
If Kain is cleansed of Nupraptor's psychic corruption by the Spirit Reaver, does that mean he's no longer "evil", or at least no longer a psychopath?
How are there multiple Hearts of Darkness in Blood Omen?
Why didn't the Ancient Vampires just explain the actual purpose of the Pillars to the humans?
How is Kain going to defeat the Elder God and restore the Pillars?

She’s not anymore, see above
>Why didn't the Elder God consume Janos' soul in the five hundred years between his death and resurrection?
Presumably he can’t and Janos just hung around his body like Dumah and the Vampires whose souls aren’t eaten by Raziel in SR1
>If Kain is cleansed of Nupraptor's psychic corruption by the Spirit Reaver, does that mean he's no longer "evil", or at least no longer a psychopath?
Presumably
>How are there multiple Hearts of Darkness in Blood Omen?
Because they’re just extra lives in that game don’t take it too literally
>Why didn't the Ancient Vampires just explain the actual purpose of the Pillars to the humans?
It doesn’t matter, humans seem vulnerable to Hylden fuckery in some way vampires aren’t . Vampires are cursed to prey on humans so humans are never going to like them

Destroyed by the Elder God when Raziel rebelled against him in Defiance. There was going to be a cutscene explaining it but it was cut.

She's a hylden vampire.
>Was the Sarafan Lord the same Hylden who possessed Mortanius and Janos?
Yes.
>How did Kain survive the removal of the Heart of Darkness?
Maybe the heart was only needed to return him to life, and did nothing after that.
>Why didn't the Elder God consume Janos' soul in the five hundred years between his death and resurrection?
Vampire souls cannot be eaten by EG until the body is destroyed, and even then they have to go through one of his servants, like Raziel.
>Does the Elder God exist out of time since he claims to have resurrected Raziel in the future and speaks with him in the past like he's already met him?
Yes, he's atemporal.

If both are holding a reaver with Raziel's soul inside, yes; it's what happened with William.

It's just a gameplay element, ignore it.

Obviously, he won't, that shits never getting another game ever again. But I'd assume the only way for you to be able to kill the elder god is to also make yourself beyond time and space as well. Nah the story was good enough that I didn't mind the idea of it getting extended past a trilogy. It had enough potential to support a ongoing franchise, they just needed to build better games around it.

Although I still would have wanted it to have a definitive ending and not just extend to infinity like Assassin's creed or something. Maybe 2 more games after Defiance on the PS3 would have been good. I wanted to see Nosgoth in HD.

Blood Omen 2 is considered the worst the series for various reasons, like graphical and sound bugs (cutscene dialogue playing out of sync, Kain's weapon sometimes sticking through his shoulder to out in front of him,). It does have some interesting levels; the Eternal Prison is rather unsettling, and the Device and the Hylden City look rather Gigeresque, and as usual for the series the voice acting and dialogue is phenomenal.

Most likely undid the necromancy spells on him as he is shown to control animated corpses in BO1 and was a studen of the vampires that invented necromancy in the first place.

He didn't, despite it's name, the (timeless) Eternal Prison has nothing to do with Mobius, it was probably build long before him.

>How did Kain survive the removal of the Heart of Darkness?
Same reason Raziel didn't die when burning in the abyss.

>Why didn't the Ancient Vampires just explain the actual purpose of the Pillars to the humans?
They did to the early human guardians. Back then there were many more Ancients. By the time of young Kain, Janos Audron is the only ancient alive and he's a recluse, hunted by the Sarafan led by Mobius.

>Vorador's presence in BO2
Considering what we know, we can explain it. What we know:
- The Hylden lord will leave Janos' body.
- Janos is then imprisoned by him.
- Kain was supposed to visit the hell dimension where the hylden live during Dark Prophecy.
If we assume the Heart of Darkness is only needed for the resurrection and does nothing afterwards (as long as the vampire doesn't die), then:
1. Kain finds Janos and takes the Heart from him.
2. Goes to Vorador's remains and resurrects him.
3. Hides the Heart somewhere, maybe inside his own body again.
Now Vorador is alive again and there can't be a paradox when the young Kain meets him and Janos in BO2 because there's only one heart present: his.

Good point I remember that. But I still maintain the position that Moebius did not build it. The EP is in S Nosgoth and due to it's pos it was probably built by the Hylden which is why The Builder is in it. He even says he was sent there during the time The Device was constructed which was in the days of the War betwen the Ancients and the Hylden, this was long long before Mobius was alive. He prob put the statue of himself in the EP after he led the rebelion against the vampires. A lot of Sarafan places were built on the Elder Races edifices.

Janos witnesses the Pillars being destroyed, by young Kain, in Defiance because old Kain brings him back to life. But yeah I get what you're saying the Sarafan didn't know that so they weren't looking for him. My point still stands, by the time the latest generation of human guardians exists there's no one left to inform them, even if Vorador would try they would try to kill him.
As I was typing this I realized a small hitch in the story. In SR2 it says the Ancients started transforming humans to vampires because the Pillars started chosing them as guardians, it also says Vorador was the first human vampire...doesn't that mean Vorador was a guardian once? Why else would they make him a vampire. I agree it's not mandatory he must be a guardian, it's just weird he is not.

It's stylized, calm down. And FYI I usualy dislike 'SOVL' fags myself, they apply the label to to many mediocre games simply because of nostalgia, but the LoK series actualy deserves it.

I used to think Metal Gear Solid was the pinnacle of video game voice acting. I was WAY off.

>> No.8992828

LoK is the only series I know that pulled 5 great games without fucking it up. Sure, there are complaints about how the story was patched together due to multiple teams doing the games, but the series still emerged as one great cohesive work.

>> No.8992858

I think to think that there is an alternate universe where Dark Prophecy was released and finished the story where everything is answered and no threads were left hanging, a mind blowing conclusion that leaves your jaw on the floor (no offence Raziel :)). A guy can dream.

>> No.8992905

>>8992858
Defiance is still a solid ending, very much in tune with LoK's hopelessness theme. Even if Dark Prophecy would've been made it wouldn't have been the last one anyway, their creators wanted to explore the demon dimension and some fragments of Nosgoth's history, I don't think it would have concluded the EG thread.

Agree with pretty much everything you said. Artistically and plot-wise the game is great but the bad things stick out like a sore thumb.
>There was one boss fight that involved precise jumping between pillars
That boss fight got me fucking HEATED. I kept falling off the damn pillars. I also remember the Constrict ability where you had to run around certain objects in order to manipulate them, the clunky controls made it extremely tedious.

>> No.9000898

>>9000884

>> No.9002341

>>9000797
Yeah, man, but that mostly applies to AAA, which is a shame, but there's a lot of good indie shit
Give Darkwood a try, it's a really good one, it's a high-quality game
It's not a roguelite, but the maps are procgen, basically handcrafted locations strewn semi-randomly around the game world
My first game took me about 30 hours because I wanted to 100% everything, but the game's more fun if you balance speed and efficient rummaging without autistically scouring every corner
You can also enable limited lives or permadeath to make it more fun, but you're gonna die a lot on your first playthrough, better go with normal
