I would like to humbly request that Shelly be left out of this. Just, out of respect for the timeline we do live in where Duke and Shelly developed into being totally separate properties, I think they both deserve to stay that way. Even though I know this won't be official, even though I know the Shelly Harrison intended for this game was totally different from the Shelly Harrison we have now, I still think it would be so very oddly disrespectful to the Shelly we have today in Ion Fury (which has, IMO totally outshined and outclassed the Duke's legacy by now, your nostalgia be damned) and seeing a different version of her in a non-canon game has the potential to muddy people's perception of her in a very surreal way. I didn't even feel comfortable seeing her in Alien Armageddon. Let the past be in the past. I honestly don't want to see the timeline where they're in the same property.

Whole thing and it's has fallen apart at 2003 when George decided to scrap the entire nearly done project because of the lightning autism (scrapping the ones with Build and Quake II engines were kinda acceptable however as DNF were still at proof of concept phase at that time). After that, whole 3DR staff and creative talent were probably demoralized as fuck thus and were fired by the man himself.

iirc in 2001 lore Duke would barge into EDF HQ and assist the non-infected EDF soldiers to defeat the infected/aliens. Then the soldier who said "Hey Pal, what are you gonna do? Save the world all by yourself?" would give you a keycard that let you access the certain area (it was the control tower iirc but I could be wrong)

For what it's worth the Voidpoint guys are the EDuke guys + some modders from Duke4 which are a wealth of knowledge on everything Duke. So they're worth reaching out to for that even if they're probably worthless in terms of Unreal development.

It's a proposed way to explain how the character fits into the story. I don't think you understand just how little story is actually in the leak. The second half of the game is barren in terms of story and the game only implies what's going on. There's some interpretation that 3DR didn't want the game to be an alien invasion purely because the "Cycloids" (The aliens from Duke 3D) aren't actually in the game outside of the Stadium level at the start of the game (which is a flashback to Duke 3D) and the E1M1 remake level (Which is also explicitly a flashback to Duke 3D and ends in a surrealistic Twin Peaks Easter egg reference). The only enemies actually fully implemented in the leak are the Snatchers which are based on The Thing.

Additionally internally at 3D Realms the story changed so much that they were introducing and removing major plot elements month by month. 1 year this character would be there the next they'd be cut. Like in the 01 leak Bombshell, Duke's female sidekick was completely removed. Only her texture is in the files. And after the 01 leak Broussard wanted to add in a dog companion for Duke Nukem that would appear in levels, which was only removed in 2004 after Half-Life 2. He also added a Matrix-like opponent called Negaduke that was a clone of Duke with a goatee. Who was only removed years later when they cut Doctor Proton out entirely.

This is why you need a plot outline since there's things like "What level do you put the final boss in". There isn't even a final boss outside of concept art. Any project attempting to finish the game will need to create a plot outline out of necessity just to explain things like "Where is Doctor Proton supposed to be? He only just appears randomly as a floating head in one level and you fight him". Even in a game with a basic save the world plot like DNF01 you still need to lay things out. Pic related is the one Valve drew for Half-Life 2 during it's early development.

This is also a necessity when dealing with a team of developers as opposed to a solo project. The main reason DNF01 didn't get finished is because nobody actually wrote down "This is what's definitively in the game". An outline is more valuable as a record as it tells people "This is what we're making and this is what we're not doing".

There's contradictory information about this from developers. It's pretty clear little thought was put into it. Like there's reports from developers that earlier on in the project Doctor Proton summoned them to Earth and was working with them, however later on in the project he was more doing his own thing and was more like Saruman the White. Since he was creating his own army of clones and machines. He was removed altogether later in development when they redesigned the game to be more similar to Duke 3D and they reused most of the cut stuff for DLC.

They're not. The aliens in Duke 2 were the "Rigelatins". Which were these amoeba like aliens. Frederick is confirmed to have that build and several others. Including the later ones like the one where they tried to make the lighting similar to Doom 3. And the ones where they started making it more like Duke 3d. (They only started introducing Duke 3D enemies/guns like the pistol/ripper later in development after they wanted to make it more similar to the original. This is eerily similar to how Half-Life 2's development progressed where they initially were making a completely different game altogether where the player wore a leather suit with a sinister voice and their melee weapon was an ice axe. And they made it more similar to HL1 later).
