>To break the psychic link the Dnyarri had on the Ur-Quan, the Ur-Quan would cut themselves with glass and burn themselves, using the moments of freedom they had to kill the Dnyarri that had a hold of them. They even made a device that generates a constant stream of agony throughout their body just so they could break free. They were so goddamn traumatized that to ensure that the same thing never happen again, they went to war against each other on their methods (either enslaving or killing all other races) to prevent further enslavement.

Taking notes helps.
Clear out all the stuff you can from each planet in a system. It's worth it.
Run away from the probes; until your ship is better equipped/you have the skills, they will do as they say(disassemble you into your component materials). Given that you haven't played that much, find the Slylandro fast.
Talk to everyone as much as possible...there's some gawd-tier dialogue in here.
Try to convince the Spathi on Pluto to join you...his ship can provide an early edge.

I also really like Mycon, though they're extremely overpriced. Someone made a mod that rebalances ship prices in Super-Melee for the tiny competitive scene on IRC (if anyone is even still on there).

I love how varied the ships are in Super-melee, and how everything has good matchups and bad matchups, and some matchups are more skill-intensive than others. If you play with the rule that you're not allowed to run more than one ship of any type, it's actually pretty strategic -- you have to decide when to play certain ships to take out your opponent's ship and when to keep them in reserve, judge when circumstances are favorable enough for you to get away with "stretch" matchups, etc.

There should be more games that offer that kind of wacky yet deep competitive experience. Space games these days always have multiple ships fighting each other at once, but I actually really like how in Star Control you take turns sending a single ship into the fight. I like the "toy-like" quality Super-Melee has, almost like you're playing a game of marbles or some shit. The player can only realistically control one ship at a time anyway, at least if you want to make skillful maneuvers and use your special weapons properly. It seems like a lot of the more interesting abilities the Star Control ships have are only workable because of the one-on-one combat.

You'd think so, but it doesn't work as well in practice as you might hope due to the velocity cap. If you're flying at top speed, maneuvering left and right will slow down your forward momentum because your speed vector can't get any longer. I wish they'd account for this somehow; it'd make the ship much better.

Indeed as they define major aspects of the games atmosphere even if the motives seem to be alien yet you can still relate to them at some point. It felt so drastic that they explained their story to you just by telling them THE WORDS. This is just how the game works. While it does explain everything you need to know, you might not fully grasp anything that happened because it feels cruel from your perspective.

On my first playthrough I was even reluctant to fight the Ur-Quan due to what happened to them in their past. I felt a multitude of emotions on that. Glorious game.

Did you guys know that when the Kzer-Za lost the war with the Kohr-Ah they beg you to run away. You can literally feel that the only thing the Kzer-Za wanted was the preservation of any race.

That thing that blew my mind was that any race that lost against the Kzer-Za also had to lose their past. When a planet was enslaved, any sign of old culture had to be erased from that culture. They didn't do that because they are the big evil and need to fuck up cultures and all of that, but they asumed that every race need to forget their past, something that the Ur-Quan direly want but can't because that is the way their live. From their perspective erasing old history is a form of compassion and even love.

They clearly wanted the best for any race but did in their own fucked up way.

The commander at the starbase did mention that the Ur-Quan ignored some historical sites, namely most of the American ones. Since those sites aren't as ancient as the Pyramids or Stonehenge, it wasn't likely to be a place where Precursor technology would be located.
