I always loved how environment looked like in this game. Amazing clean graphics and lighting for its time. Unfortunately the character models and special effects weren't nearly as good and overall the engine lacked compared to e.g. Unreal (which Deus Ex was built on).

Well, buzzwords aside, he's right about SS1 being the superior title. And not by a small amount.

SS2 is still a good game, but imo SS1 > Prey >>> SS2 >>>>/>>>>> anything like Bioshock (ewwww).

Sound cards were really big at the time so I think they wanted to capitalize on it like they were with everything else. Then when Creative killed soundcards it died. Sound propagation is starting to make a comeback in the indie space though.

What gunplay? "Beat everything to death with a wrench until you find a (bugged) pistol that isn't made of shit" gunplay?
SS2's gunplay is the counterpart of JRPGs "because fuck you that's why" gameplay. I don't disagree with the idea of having to do the maintenance in a survival-istic game in principle, but SS2 overdid it.

That's what SS2 "gunplay" boils down to. Shoot the bosses and the suicide bombers, whack everything else. Fuck that noise.

>That's what SS2 "gunplay" boils down to.
No, the definition doesn't change based on title. The fact that you honestly believe the way you played the game is the only possible way is a testament to the emergent nature of it.
But for the record, even in its primitive, ugly state, SS2 has much better feeling and sounding guns than Deus Ex.

Yes, you'll be fine. System Shock 2 wasn't even originally intended to be a System Shock game (original project name was Junction Point). I consider it a soft reboot of the series, and in reality, it hardly has any connection to the original. The gameplay is completely different.

If you play on Hard - Impossible, yeah you can screw yourself easily.

I would advice to play on Normal once, you can make mistakes there, and after you find your build, specialize hard on the higher difficulties.

Wasting all your ammo. If you approach it like Resident Evil and wrench most enemies you'll be fine. If you get some hacking + standard weapons it doesn't matter how retarded your build is unless you play on higher difficulties

There was a part in this review where they said Thief should have had the blink ability from Dishonored. They also cringed at the fact pushing buttons doesn't have a camera pan over and show what the button did. It reminded me why I don't play newer games.

It's the point of the game that you can stop being cautious and spend your items with abandon. Put that assault rifle on full auto and kill anything that moves.

So it isn't THAT bad? Good to know, even in regular games I don't just fire blindly until I run out of ammo. Also I usually play on normal since harder difficulties usually rely on cheating AI and/or bullshit (or at least more so than usual and also because I don't have the same patience for vidya I had in my teenage years ) Thanks, lads

>> No.8965182

I also kinda put it off because of how intimidating the stats RPG stuff is. It kinda evens out over your playtime. Even if you waste EXP it doesn't really matter.

>> No.8965221

>>8965176
Actually, when you play it for the first time, you'll be overwhelmed by the complexity of the game and will feel tempted to give up, especially as you mentioned you don't have much patience. There are many separate and interconnected systems you are supposed to learn how they work and manage properly. But it's on subsequent playthroughs that the game really gets fun, since then you already know how it works and can focus on experimenting new builds.

>> No.8965410

>>8965221
>There are many separate and interconnected systems you are supposed to learn how they work and manage properly.
This is a total exaggeration. It's like how Daggerfall shills say there are 100s of complex systems but then it turns out they're all copies of eachother or barely implemented properly. So the most you can do is try to force a meme run because you've played the game to death.

>> No.8965616

Meh, I can handle interconnected systems (OG Fallout, Deus Ex, KC:D). I just don't have any more tolerance for BS from the game's part. Also, I tend to play games only once for muh story. Ideally I like feeling like I learned SOMETHING, or at least killed time in a different way

>> No.8966078

SS1's first 2 levels are absolutely terrible but after that it picks up because SHODAN starts getting pissed and actually begins to impact the story. There's also no RPG system you can immediately change your play style at the drop of a hat. It still has that survival horror resource management thing because the levels begin to hide the respawn chamber and if you die the enemies all respawn but you get none of your resources back.

Once you realize how developers saw a keyboard back then none of this becomes bad or hard to play.
