I'm with you, I probably played more of this than actual Zelda. Picked it up after being a fan of Legend of the Mystical Ninja for SNES, and absolutely loved it - first game I ever tried that felt this way. It legitimately felt like a comedic LttP in 3D, and that was huge. For the longest time, I didn't even have a memory pak, so I had to keep starting over from the beginning. That's probably why I remember the first boss fight with the giant robot and the mysterious man/woman, but not a lot of the end game.

I never played the sequel that came out a few years later though.

For all the years I spent with the N64, I still can't ever seem to remember this. I remember Rumble Pak because I watched that Nintendo Power Star Fox promo VHS (where Sony and Sega kidnap and torture a stuffed Mario) like a hundred times, but I just can't stop calling it a memory card.

Says it on the back and on the box. It is true that some official promo material said "Memory Pak" though, but I doubt that was influential. But there was a Performance third party card I had that said "Memory Card" on it, and I think those were pretty popular.

>> No.8948838

>>8947726
"Controller Pak" is just confusing as fuck because it seems like it's talking about the controller itself, not a "pak" that goes IN the controller. Plus, for all intents and purposes, the rumble and transfer paks are also devices that go in the controller... I dunno why they chose to name it like that instead of Memory Pak.
I became used to the name when I finally got an official one boxed, but before that I also called it memory pak.
>>8948823
These Performance ones are good on paper but they are infamous for shitting up your saves quickly... mine got unusable in less than 10 years, whereas the legit official one still works perfectly.
Goemon is the game that made me go and grab an official one, after I became frustrated trying to make the Performance one work to no avail.

>> No.8948938

>>8948823
To be fair, I haven't been in the same room as a controller pak box for like 25 years.

I did have a new-in-box expansion pak that I got for one of my birthdays that I never installed, and I opened that up recently to put in my new-as-an-adult N64. Felt a little surreal to finally pop that thing in so many years later, especially considering my parents have been dead for a long time as well.

3 had some glitches that could cause you to get permanently stuck in certain parts of the game, forcing you to reset the entire thing. For some reason DDS decided to use Revision 0 of the game that had said glitches for his translation, rather than Revision 2 which fixed them, and because of that he released several patches trying to fix the game breaking bugs only to inadvertently introduce a new one.

Eventually he decided to just make a patch for Revision 2, but the problem with that one is that it doesn't work on real hardware - it crashes at the introduction cutscene. I emailed Tom about this, and DDS doesn't seem to want to be bothered to fix this issue because he doesn't have an FXPAK Pro to test it out on.

It was the only thing made for the controller slot until Star Fox came out. I think they were going for an idea-esque name: "This memory card innovatively goes in the back of your personal controller, so let's emphasize that by calling it Controller Pak."

For the best experience immediately, 1. Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon (N64) then 2. Goemon's Great Adventure (Mystical Ninja 2 for PAL region) (N64).

The SNES games are great, too, but the 64 ones are peak for some reason. Play those in order of release. The PSX ones are good to mediocre (I played the first one, Akogingu, and was not impressed). The NES arcade platformers are good for what they are. The NES Gaiden RPGs are decent (from what I played of the first). The Game Boy games are great to atrociously bad (ie, the bad one is called "Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon" (GB)), the best one supposedly being "Dynamites" for GBC.

Start with the 8-bit Goemon games (which are severely underrated, especially GG2 on NES), then the SNES ones, then N64's, then finish off with the DS game. The PSX/PS2 Goemons are optional and not as good as the essential entries.

What I found boring about it (so far, as I find it boring and put it on the backlog) is that the first new guy you get seems to do nothing but be a useless retard that can only attack close-range and whose personality adds nothing to the dynamics of the story, unlike Goemon or Ebisu and certainly unlike Yae or Sasuke. Somehow, 6th gen just wasn't a gen for 3D platformers... look at all the sequels for famous 3D platforming IPs, people mostly fondly remember the 5th gen stuff.
Still, a proper 3D Goemon instead of that weird Ghibli-esque take on Goemon for PS2 would have been pretty good, but probably not topped MNSG.

Besides the graphical issues, it's also got much longer loading times and lags a lot harder. The extra stuff it adds isn't really worth how much worse it performs and looks compared to the other versions of the game.

I've heard good things about their Vandal Hearts port to Saturn, but haven't played it myself.

Also, the lead designer of Dracula X for SNES would go on to direct Castlevania Legends and the crappy Gameboy Goemon at Nagoya, which makes sense, DX feels a lot sloppier designed in general than Rondo of Blood.

Gotta love how many Konami games in the 90s had references to dracula or dracula-like vampires. The Tiny Toon games and Animaniacs had it.
Speaking of Animaniacs, the SNES game was developed by people from the Goemon team and you can see some Goemon elements in it, definitely recommended.

Eh, they're differently structured games. Different abilities on SNES animaniacs wouldn't make much sense because the game doesn't have puzzle elements, it's a straight action-platformer (with the uniqueness of having belt-scrolling movement). The Genesis game is more like Lost Vikings. The SNES game is more about maintaining all 3 brothers so you can reach different places.
I do prefer the SNES game but both are pretty nice, love when Konami made different games for each console instead of doing the same thing.

I still have like 30+ games for my n64 that I have owned since being a little kid, I don't think a everdrive is a great investment especially since emulation perfectly acceptable now and I already own the games I want to play. I just never got to experience Goemon as a kid and probably just due to bad advertising and really bad box art. I remember being really disappointed in one of the bomberman games so I had to pick my games really carefully as a kid back in the day.
