I dunno, I found using the mouse annoying, as you can't feel the centerpoint, instead you have to put a little bit of your attention onto recentering. It's not hard, but it's enough to be an irritant in a game where you're trying to track so many things at once.

True, but many others are still great and worth playing like Tie Fighter, Wing Commander, X-Wing Alliance, Starlancer. Without even mentioning the plethora of fan-made campaigns for Freespace.
Plenty of less known games like Darklight Conflict too.
