are the fats anymore reliable
every single slim ive seen has a fucked laser
how is that even possible, isnt it the same? its newer shouldnt it be better

I had my fatty working for over 10 years and probably still works to this day

>> No.8929537

It's newer means it's smaller and cheaper, not better.

idk, all my ps2 are dead, had 4 fat, 3 stopped reading dics and 1 got corrupted, and 2 slims, none work. ps2 sucks

I fixed the laser on my slim, was pretty easy but requires some soldering skill which I fortunately have.

>> No.8929776

>>8929496
I had two slims and both had their lens changed after around three years of use and both died a year or so after changing the lens.
Also the second one used to scratch the DVDs on a circle motion.
Never bothered with PlayStation after that, but to be honest I still have my working PSONE that I brought around 2002 or 2003 and I think my original PS would still be around if it wasn't for my drunk ass brother.

>> No.8929816

>>8929776
It's the ribbon cable that scratches the discs in the slim. Can be easily fixed just by pushing down on it, doesn't stop it from being a bit shit

Just clean your console faggot. I remember I had an issue like this and all I had to do was open it and get the dust out of it.

>are the fats anymore reliable
Some are, some are not. There are several different models of both the phat and the slim.

>> No.8931043

How have you guys managed to kill your lasers? I have a fat from 2000 and a slim from 2004. Both work fine. The slim did have the ribbon cable issue once like five years ago, but I was able to fix it with tape.

>> No.8931056

>>8931043
Same way all those people killed their SNES CPUs apparently.

>> No.8931059

>>8931043
Idk how people do it, seems to happen more to slims. Fats just get dusty and it usually just impedes the infrared laser

>> No.8931073

I had a fat and slim and a GameCube and a Dreamcast which all had broken lasers in the end. Gen 6 was shit for this all around.

>> No.8931102

How the fuck does a console laser even go bad? Does the crystal in there degrade or some shit?

>> No.8931134

>>8931043
how the fuck would i know? my PS1 still works today, but my PS2 died after like 5 years or so. Never bothered to get it fixed or install one of those USB hacks

>every single slim fucked
thats because its intentional
sony pads their sales numbers by intentionally designing things to break

open the slims up, there is very likely nothing wrong- the fan blows directly onto the lens assembly and traps dustbunnies and hair on it causing malfunctions

i have "fixed" four like this
they all were fine

>> No.8931474

Where is the ps2 ODE?
Even the gc has one and the wii exist which can play any game fine from any external memory

>> No.8931548

>>8929654
I did the same when mine was having problems reading DVDs.
Really the soldering wasn't that difficult, you'd probably have more of a challenge keeping the rails aligned during reassembly.

>> No.8931642

>>8931474
For the disks, not really, especially the first editions.
Fats typically circumvent this with a hard drive mod, so there's no reason not to go with a fat where possible.

Since the PS1, and possibly even the Discman, Sony is notorious for using the absolute cheapest lasers possible, and also for intentionally killing them prematurely when they repeatedly read burned media. Cue naysayers and subsequent evidence providers for these claims.
>>8929569
>ps2 sucks
It really is unfortunate. The engineering is sort of a marvel, and is executed in such a chinky way.

I'm getting one of these but I don't have a controller for it.
How do the different controllers avsilable compare with each other, and which one would be best overall?
It also accepts Bluetooth capable Xbox-One controllers.
I only ever used a 360 controller.

I've had two fatties, one with a new laser and the OG one from my childhood. Zero issues with either.

My fatty has a weird issue where the screen is all fucked up like somebody cut the image apart with scissors and glued it back together wrong, and it also only displays blues and yellows, but super oversaturated and where there shouldn't be blues and yellows

itt: retards
buy SCPH-39001 on ebay, they aren't expensive

for power users, consider installing a noctua fan with a 3d printed enclosure from amazon and get FMCB either on a memory card(works on slims without the shiny top) or HDD installed through the ethernet adapter. im running an sd card through an additional adapter after following some faggot reddit guide(easy to find)
im currently running ISOs through samba share, they're flawless with OCCASIONAL fmv stuttering which depends on the game. you can do this with a proper router and a windows PC, but im running them from an openmediavault based NAS i made from my old pc from 2011.
none of this is hard to do and i have zero technical expertise, just follow some instructions on the wiki and youtube

>> No.8934186

I just got a new 39001 yesterday. Opened it up to inspect things, pulled out the PSU and noticed it was wade by Nichicon. Not bad. PS2 power supplies made by them should outlive the motherboards.

you can use basically anything with that but I use the duelshock 3 because it has almost the same layout as a duelshock 2. it can also use wired controllers like the kind hori sells.

There are significant variations in the hardware used in the PS2 fats. You can't really group them together.

>> No.8934305

>>8934194
Any PSU you can get the proper stable specs out of to match the rails on the system will work, technically.
The PS2 has a 4-prong interconnect between the mobo and PSU board though. Slims have the PSU as part of the external plug.

But it died
And my Game Boy Color too
Then it died

Something which can't
Be found but I'm hoping
I still dream of arcades
Though they died

I bought a 7000x model specifically because of the IDE interface on the motherboard but never bothered with soldering the port/cable to it because streaming the ISO over the LAN works great except for the (high bitrate) videos. Also no wear on the DVD drive (it's the piece of shit plastic lens that decays over time - more so for the burnt media which puts extra strain on it - not the laser itself).

>> No.8936761

Launch day PS2 still works and so does the other I got about 6 years ago. Some of my friends have had problems too and it’s only been the ones that burn games.

>> No.8936772

You can use OPL to load games off the network on a slim. I don't know why people are still so hesitant to do this, if you have a desktop PC it's way easier to get working than tracking down an old HDD and using that in a fat.
Besides if you already have a media server (i'm considering it, I'm sick of paying subscriptions) then it's a no brainer.

>> No.8937080

Optical replacement is really easy on the slims. The only "soldering" you have to do is desolder the ESD protection blob, and some sellers even do that for you.

That said, get five buck FMCB card and use ethernet. No modding, it's great.
