If you were mad that some obscure/niche game X was going unnoticed but Reddit was instead paying attention to game Y and you had an argument about why its gameplay/experience is unique (e.g. Electric Underground's videos on shmups) then it would be worth hearing what you have to say. The point is that it's fine to like games. Even if they're Reddit tier. So long as they're things that give you some sort of enjoyment. Who cares. But claiming some sort of superiority to other people when your tastes are in reality just extremely proximal to theirs means the energy you're using to be angry on the internet should be spent somewhere else. You can also get a blogspot or whatever. Ask yourself this question, do you find yourself refreshing pages on games for "research" because you feel like your game "needs the best inspiration or else people won't care about it?"

An interesting question I recently asked myself is: "Would I care to constantly check in on video game forums/twitch streams if my game was already done and completed to my own standards?" and my personal answer to that question is "No" for the most part, but there are a handful of games I that I genuinely find fun (e.g. DoDonPachi). So technically, playing games is just a way for me to procrastinate and forever be trapped by the feeling of never having completed my game, which has wrecked my life in a lot of places. So yes. I want to be done with my game to have put an awesome game out there that people can like (similar to how I like DoDonPachi) and not really to make some political statement, inflate my narcissism, or get rich (but I don't plan on doing all this for free).

I also want to make a game. Here I am, writing this post instead of doing homework for a course I'm in.

...this wouldn't stop you from just doing stuff regardless if you're good at them or not. People don't necessarily need to help you in order for you to get good at a skill. Having a teacher/mentor WILL help you, you can pay for those, but the other half of the equation is you simply getting started and putting in the hours, no matter how painful it feels to be doing something you're not good at. Literally all hard skills are developed this way.

Those people in that era had to be lucky enough to have parents willing to give them a Commodore64 or an Apple II so they could self-teach themselves programming (BASIC or C) in order to get that job. Virtually no non-undergraduate Computer Science courses existed at that period of time (and LITERALLY NO college CS courses touched game development topics).

The point is that at every epoch of time, there are always adversities and boons you can take advantage of. Regardless of the challenges/boons, the people who are determined succeed will do so no matter how much sweat and blood is required.

tl;dr don't be bitch-made and use that as a cope for not making your game. No one is going to come to you with a million dollars and a set of mentors to teach you how to make it. John Carmack was literally arrested for stealing a computer to make games because he wasn't going to let his impoverished upbringing get in his way of making his game. This is the art that Jonathan Blow used to prototype Braid. Do you think he shipped his game with his programmer art? No. He didn't give up. He got a fun, playable game, and then showed it to people who also thought it was fun and playable and then eventually paid for an artist to help him.

It is impossible that you cannot draw as well as what Jon Blow did here and that's the minimum to get the game working. No game developer started out with a prototype that looked gorgeous enough to sell. 90% of dev time is spent with the game looking terrible until the last 10% of the time when the polish is added.

This is nonsense. I know many programmers who make games that make money with terrible code (literally just for-each'ing arrays with no other data structures).

In the same way you need a minimum number of lines for a drawing to resemble a person, you do need a minimum number of lines of code for it to be a binary that compiles.

The majority of games you probably love were written with code that wouldn't pass in a modern technical interview.

If you have a degree in CS, you understand data structures, you understand calculus/trig/linear algebra, you understand undergrad physics. These things are what you need to make a game.

Download Unity or Unreal. Make a game using capsules or boxes. Alternately learn to make a human rig with boxes for limbs in Blender if you want a character. There are free youtube tutorials that show how to do this. Make your animations from looking up videos on Youtube and just copy what you see in Blender keyframes. Import that into your game. There are tutorials on Youtube that show how to do this.

I'm not sure what else to tell you. If you really want your game to happen, you will be relentlessly obsessive about bringing it to fruition. You might just be letting too many worthless distractions (the news, /pol/, video game happenings) sap your focus from you mentally staying on the target long enough to consider all of the options to get the prototype for your game done.

I legitimately wish you well and hope you fight the good fight to actually get your game done. I am also on the same journey.

Data structures and algorithms are a required portion of any CS degree.

I would expect any half-decent CS degree to also require calculus and undergrad physics. It isn't always the case they require linear algebra though. But you can grasp it pretty well if you know trig and calculus well.

If you don't understand those things, your degree is meaningless and you should re-attend a community college with the intention to understand:

Literally every CS degree requires data structures and algorithms. If you don't understand that one piece at the bare minimum, your degree is not a CS degree period.

It's not to demoralize you. It's to literally tell you the truth. Which means you can be helped by taking the courses I listed _which should be part of most if not all CS degrees_. At this point I'm beginning to question if you were telling the truth about having a degree in the first place but I'm not looking to publicly humiliate you so you don't need to admit this. Calculus is what lets you understand how physics in a game is modeled along with understanding how to do image processing with shaders. It's also a required course for virtually any CS degree. There's this bizarre meme that Calculus somehow isn't important and then those same programmers come to me not understanding why things in graphics are represented as "gradients" or "taylor series". It's because you thought Calculus wasn't important when it is.
