What were you doing while Nec, Hudson and Naxat were sponsoring pervy shows on Japanese TV in the 90s, /vr/?
Maybe playing some Super Bomberman or some Alien Crush?

The Macintosh is the reason you're using a windowing GUI right now, Anon. It was absolutely fucking revolutionary when it came out because at that point PCs ran on DOS. Early Mac users weren't really evangelizing Apple, they were evangelizing the concept of a graphical operating system. But then the evangelism started making less sense when Microsoft finally caught up and Apple began going off the rails.

>Xerox with doing fucking nothing with their GUI and tt would've stayed in the lab if it was up to them
Their research lab found serious potential problems with the WIMP-gui model. (for onced instance, icons are supposed to be "intuitive" but they found that in many cases new users were confused by what the icons meant or were supposed to be.) They discovered that while the WIMP-GUI was much easier for a subset of people, it was actually harder for others and not the panacea they had hoped. They suggested more research be done on these problems and how to mitigate or eliminate them, but that research was never done. Apple just took the whole thing and (after adding the Trashcan, their only real contribution, which I always disable) began selling it as the One True Way, and eventually Windows followed suit, and most people just got used to it.
A number of other approaches to GUI design were invented around the same time and are now largely forgotten. It's a shame.
