PCSX2 allows me to run PS2 games at 4K on my HDR 144hz monitors. Great upscaled textures, plays like a champ, no disc error bullshit to worry about.
Now that the dust has long settled and Sony's bullshit artists aren't running around claiming the PS2 can be used to launch ballistic missiles(remember that faggotry?) we can finally admit, the system's hardware is SHIT. Game console hardware post SNES/Gen has been ass and shit. Too much cost-cutting in vital places, usually in disc drives.

Great games, decent processing and silicon, but that laser and drive are FUCKED, and even putting games on an HDD isn't cut and dry with Free McBoot. You can't just toss isos on and make the thing work like with the Wii.

I didn't learn that on g4.
It's basic systems development. The PS3 and 360 both had this flaw, because MS and Sony basically engineered high-performance gaming PCs into "too small" cases with too little heat dissipation.
You have to rework the cooling on those high-wattage OG systems to keep them from destroying their connectivity. Not nearly enough cooling and fans for a 200W power draw.

The PS2 is great when the drive is up to snuff. But as these things get older they're going to get harder to find, and Sony being Sony and building is self-destructing chips into the thing along with other possibly unknown tricks means that emulation becomes more important. I don't think an FPGA solution is possible in the foreseeable future too, sadly.

Ideally, you could flash a custom FW onto the PS2 and allow booting PS1 and PS2 isos from the main menu. This might become a possibility if some autists take the time to unlock that fucker. There has to be a way.

Here's what I did ages ago:
>format the HDD to PS2's format
>google up the tools to install games to the PS2 HDD
>install a bunch of games I wanted to play(The Warriors, Simpsons Hit & Run, Resident Evil Outbreak, etc)
>put HDD in PS2's network adapter
>put into PS2
>install FreeMcBoot off of modchipped PS2 to boot the disc
>put FreeMcBoot memory card into PS2
>turn on, load OPL, pick and load game I want to play
>play game
It's only hard if you are retarded. If retarded, you shouldn't even be trying.

idk how to format the hdd to ps2 format or what ps2 format even is. what the fuck is OPL? what if i dont already have a modded ps2 to get freemcboot? why do i need freemcboot i thought it could just get games off the network cable? im not gonna spend money getting a freemcboot card. i dont have any IDE HDDs

here just stick a hard drive in the thing and do what it says in this video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO5DmaXKZ0c
you dont need access to a pre-modded ps2 to get anything set up, you just need to be able to write to a hard drive thats plugged into your computer. i managed it and i am dumber than goddamn shit.

>> No.8928851

why do i need a hard drive though? why cant it be direct? i dont have any hard drives. and again i dont have an ide drive

Just buy a SATA drive. They're almost pocket change these days if you're over 18, which I must assume you are.
The direct connect between an HDD and the PS2 will always be more stable and faster than anything ethernet that it can do, much less USB.

How well would a mini PC, with a Ryzen 9 and running Retropie hooked up to a TV emulate? Would it struggle with emulation with just the APU?

>> No.8929128

There's that "network adapter" linked above on Amazon that takes a straight SATA drive, no added shit required on the PS2 end.
Should work a treat.

That's a meaty CPU to run Retropie. My R9 5950X laughs at everything I throw at it.

I think there's simply too goddamn many of them. Corpos have the runs and shit them out unrelentingly. These, Thinkcentres, and Pro/EliteDesks. I'm sure some youtuber will fuck up the ride eventually, though, combined with supply finally slowing down.

They just do that after aging, hosiden (H) pads often have soldered on contact sheets so you have to replace them with new ones. Costs a few literal dimes from china and be careful soldering, it's a one sided pcb with small and delicate traces. 18 or 19 pin connectors both work too. Opening it up will determine if you have to solder or not.
