Not to be a contrarian, but I must be the only person who played it in the 90s on original hardware who didn't really care for it (nor VIII, though I kinda enjoyed IX).

dafuq? FF7 is one of the few games where the plot is perfectly executed. foreshadowing just at all the right times and the right amount. you're constantly making progress, but some bit of the puzzle is always missing and its nagging at you. and when you have all the pieces and it's time for the big reveal, it absolutely nails it. the music, atmosphere and tone is spot on at that moment and it bats it out of the park. I'd be hard pressed to list 5 rpgs with better plots.

Is there a version out there with a better translation than the og PS1 version? I've played through it twice, and I'm still convinced that Jenova is the one pulling the strings, not Sephiroth.

Not that guy but I just played it again for the first time since the 90s and have to agree the story holds up surprisingly well. The main issue is the translation does hold it back at times. It's one of the few JRPGs where I think the poor translation quality actually makes a difference, because of the weird supernatural mystery element of the story.

Absolutely agree with this. FF7's story isn't perfect of course, but does a great job on many important parts that most games fail at.

This isn't true either, though. FF7 does indeed trust its core gameplay loop. Despite all the minigames and set pieces and dialog events and linearity FF7 still somehow manages to stay grounded in the traditional FF7 gameplay loop (in a way that subsequent FF games, notably IX, definitely do NOT). The game is still designed around the assumption that the combat is fun, and the main reason people play is for the combat.

Maybe. It's easy to try. The first 15-30 minutes gives a solid introduction of what most of the game will be like. Or you can try Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy V which are its most obvious influences gameplay-wise.
