SCPH-5xxx with PU-18 mainboard relocated the drive away from the PSU eliminating heat issues, introduced self-adjusting servo and still had good video and sound chips.

That's my choice (middle config on your pic)

>> No.8921136

>>8921108
If you want the best sound quality then go for the bottom. If you don't care about having the best sound but you want cheats and easy piracy via the expansion port then go for the middle. If you don't give a fuck about any of the above then go for the top. But no matter what you choose you'll have to replace the disc drive unless you manage to find one that's barely been used after 20+ years.

Sound quality on the middle is no worse, in fact it's now widely recognised that the multi-av audio path was best all along unless highly modified due to less capacitors in the circuit. You'd honestly be better off adding pic related to the middle revision if you want RCA jack output.

Genesis is easy, just make sure it's a Model 1 that says "High Definition Graphics" on the top. Otherwise the audio is garbage.

Saturn cost $100 more than the PS and Sega didn't cheap out on build quality. Meanwhile Dreamcast launched for $100 less than the PS2 and while the early PS2s had problems, Sega was definitely cutting corners to keep the cost down and make a next-gen system competitively priced with the current offerings.

Some of the model 1 Genesis boards, I think VA1 or VA2, had bad implementation of analog filtering which led to the volume being too loud and having severe clipping. I don't remember the details.

I think it was the model 1 VA4/5/6 which is considered the best, depending on whether you want TMSS (the lockout rom that says "developed for sega" on boot) or not.

Model 2 is all garbage except for the VA2/2.3 which uses a real ym2612.
I think there's some audio fix that can make the sound less garbage, but you still have to deal with some effects sounding completely different, and that fix makes the sound super clear instead of the bassy, soft sound in the model 1s. The only saving grace of the model 2 is that some later models fixed the column scroll bug (leftmost column glitches when doing column scroll, you can see it in a lot of games that do full screen rotation, like the pirate ship in Streets of Rage 2).
