Anyone else remember this strategy guide? There was some pretty funny shit in here. Versus Books was freakin awesome. Unlike Prima and Brady Games...

I have their FF7 guide

I never understood the point of these guides for every single game. If it's some 80 hour long rpg then sure whatever, but games like Mario64, or RE, or even shit like racing games had guides. If you need a guide for these games you probably can't even read it anyway.

yeah i still have it. it is really funny, i remember getting it and not even owning RE3 at the time cause it was funny

You don't know everything about RE3

Though I doubt the guide does either

IIRC a bunch of Prima's and Brady Games' strategy guides in the Y2K through mid-2000s were written by Dan Birlew who got his start writing the original version of that big Resident Evil Plot Analysis FAQ on GameFAQs. He only did up through RE2 before handing it over to someone else because he couldn't continue working on it "for legal reasons" which I assume were getting hired by Prima or Brady Games since his first strategy guide he wrote for them ( looking at his bibliography) is the RE3 one.

I liked Prima's Shenmue strategy guide less because of the strategy guide and more because it had the official biographies for every single character, down to irrelevant NPCs, in the game. That was kind of my first experience with "lore" I guess or really the idea of thinking of every character as someone possessing their own lives and not just wallpaper for the major characters which has actually had a large influence on writing for me, as dumb as that is.

Some of these are good for lore and artwork, and useful tips for shorter but more mechanically tight games. It's not necessarily about just getting to the credits but smaller neat things you might have missed.

He fucked up a bit by using the S.D. Perry novels for reference. The games never established S.T.A.R.S. as being founded in the 1960's.

Yet the only ones with the damage and HP data are the Japanese ones.

To be fair, finding those values back in the day was almost impossible for western gaming journalists due to the lack of hacking tools. Most japanese publications got that information straight out of the japanese developers and companies.

Those bios were on the Shenmue passport disc but you needed to hook your Dreamcast up to the internet to see them. What's interesting is that the bios actually tie in to the character behaviours. Like you'll see one NPC who just aimlessly wanders around town in a business suit rather than getting on the bus and it's because he lost his job and is pretending to his wife everything's alright. Shenmue is ridiculously detailed.

pretty sure the beginning of the versus books re3 guide lists all the enemies and how many hits they take with each weapon including the knife.

Yeah but the damage values are much more important than something as abstract as "hits".
