The hub world was really something else as a kid, very comfortable atmosphere and exploring was fun. The designer did well at teasing the player's curiosity about new areas.

It had a good single player but the maps sucked and driving beat both water and air courses.

It was like Mario Kart, but way cooler. It was also way more frustrating though.

I remember that I lost this game for a while, several months at least. Turns out it was under the TV stand the whole time.

it was fun multiplayer and felt like it had a lot more variation than mario kart 64 but the single player, that first boss, was unforgiving sometimes as a kid. i can remember many times wanting to play diddy kong racist just because the different vehicles and tracks available or just exploring the world hub and dicking around in there.

I played CTR first by chance though I owned both systems so I kind of never got into this one as much as of 1999; I thought the multiple vehicle mechanics in DKR were interesting but ultimately unfocused the gameplay without adding that much to it, and otherwise everything really good about it was done better in the Crash Bandicoot knockoff. Also I wasn't that much of edgelord or anything, but the game and characters looked WAY too childish and unappealing.

A slower not as good mario kart, notable for having the original design of Conker. We were pretty done with mario kart by the time this came out. Some other people I knew liked it a lot as a sort of sequal to mario kart. I should give it another go, I tend to play a couple of levels then never touch it for years.

Rare dropped this with no prior announcement which reinforced the GOLD status Rare held among N64 players because they just kept releasing great titles and then this came as a total surprise on top. Game's extremely comfy and sufficiently hard, airplane racing is great fun and progress feels nice and steady. Exploring the hub world was great, too.

>A slower not as good mario kart
It was probably still ok back then, but I'm rather sick of Mario Kart not having a proper single player mode. The only way to get challenged in 8DX is 200CC, and that's because most tracks weren't designed for it, and 3 star them
All-Star Transformed pretty did what I wanted MK8 to do, but then they somehow screwed it up with Team Sonic Racing

>> No.8913731

I played it a lot as a kid, me and my brother could never beat the 2nd pterodactyl race.

Played it again last year and found it to be pathetically easy, except for the hovercraft levels because the hovercraft has fucking aids controls; feels like driving on ice with a vehicle made out of ice.

Also I discovered that some characters are just not viable for beating the first Wizpig race, without some ridiculous TAS shit. Tried so many times with Pipsy and couldn't even get past him. Tried using Diddy instead, and beat it on the first try lmao

Damn, Pipsy was my character, that might explain why I was struggling so much throughout the game

the first wizpig race is impossible unless you know the boost trick. couldn't advance farther in the game until i found out about it years later...

>> No.8913746

>>8913738
Even with the "boost trick" (let go of A just before you go over zipper) I couldn't get past him. As in, I couldn't get in front of him to be in first place, even when I was super-boosting on every single zipper.

Then I tried ONE TIME with Diddy instead, and it was easy as fuck and I beat it the first try.

>> No.8913749

>>8913746
I've heard recently here that there's some other speed trick where you can just mash the gas button or something?

>> No.8913753

>>8913749
No idea. The only "boost trick" that GameFAQs guides mentioned is letting go of the gas just before going over a zipper, and it actually works with almost every boost in the game, even the blue balloons.

>> No.8913794

Honestly DKR is kind of weird in how it favours the high speed racers. You don't get hit by AI racers that much so accel isn't a big deal, and basically any racer can turn on a time with break drifting so turning is a useless stat. Meanwhile all of the hardest races in the game are basically just drag races so you want as much speed as possible to get through them.

>>8913749
Yeah there's this weird glitch where you actually go faster if you mash the gas button instead of holding it. There's kind of a rythm to how you're supposed to mash it to make it work but it's actually a pretty significant increase once you get it. Start up the game and try it with the speedometer showing you'll see the difference.

It made me angry. I never liked the hovercraft sections, or aeroplane bits. I liked the atmosphere, but I couldn't even unlock thr chicken, let alone go to space or unlock TT. I also hated the boss battles. I played quite a lot of multiplayer, it was OK (battle mode)

>> No.8914045

It was a high quality game and more challenging than smk64 -- a better single player game too. Really nice graphics and music. I had it for a two day rental and played it non-stop and reached some kind of ending. I think there were only the races against the clock left to do. So I never owned it. a mix of satisfaction from collecting things, and satisfying the curiosity of exploration
it was extremely immersive to explore the hub world and find accidentaly entire worlds with many new courses
in fact discovering new worlds in this way, back then, felt like something unique that few would discover, which might have been true
when you found something by yourself you thought "there is no way someone else managed to find it, and except me there is not a lot of players that play this"
which again might have been somewhat true, relatively speaking
glad to have lived through the golden era and not be a laggard

>> No.8914297

Comfy atmosphere, but once the novelty of multiple vehicles wear off it isn't really anything to write home about. Controls are slippery, level design and item balance are kind of half-baked, and some of the challenges are fucking ridiculous. Both CTR and MK64 were better.

Partly because this is the only console game my doom / quake playing dad ever liked / would play wit me and he loved the shit out of it. Not joking, probably the best kart game of all time for me. Maybe nostalgia is talking but i really think Rare knew what players really wanted back in the time.
What a soulfull game.

The only back side of this game comes from the hardware limitations of the N64, like the AI were removed if you were playing as 3-4 human players, MK64 got the same problem but i wasn't so fan of that game.

I wish more kart racers had something like DKR's coin races, they were fun and added a lot of challenge to tracks you've beaten already.

The only thing like it was the CTR races in CTR, but even then there's only 3 tokens and they're easy to get once you've found them, like 99% of the time they're just hidden in shortcuts you'd want to take anyway. Not at all like DKR's silver coins where the game might just be like "get that silver coin that's just just 10 seconds off course over there and then win the race afterwards, if you're so great"

DKR in general had a lot of pretty fun challenges. I really liked how its final boss was basically just a race you had to do perfectly, no items or shortcuts to cheese it with. That first Wizpig race was like a time trial ghost that could run you off the road it was great. I know people hate the first Wizpig race because they think it's bullshit but they're just shitters. So many kids got filtered by that race, there was a time where getting to the space world without having to beat Wizpig was like the kart racer equivalent of finding the triforce in OoT, which I guess it actually predates.

Sonic R isn't even a bad game. It's quite graphically impressive for a Saturn title, and has nice music. The racing is okay but I have always bounced off walls and found turning hard. The big problem though is that you can clear the entire game in like 20 minutes. It has no depth and Sega was still operating from an "arcade" mindset when developing it.

Just imagine if they had a "quest" mode in the game like CTR or Diddy? Story and everything?

I remember thinking it was everything Mario Kart 64 should have been. Being able to pick your items was a great touch. Opponent AI isn't busted, it feels like you're simply racing the other characters instead of a computer.

In retrospect they could have done even more with the island hub, after all the game was rushed out for Xmas (6 months slashed from its dev time iirc) and 57 balloons is a strange number for a complete file.

I still think MK64 beats it in a couple areas, such as overall track design (DKR's tracks are all really claustrophobic, with later ones relying on ultra-sharp turns for challenge) and sense of speed (outside of green boosts, DKR never felt that fast to me).

>> No.8916824

This game exposed how lacking Mario Kart 64 was. It was just as fun to play with friends as MK64, same level of charm, but you could actually sit and play it for more than 30 minutes as a single player

Its only real competitor was MK64 and MK64 seems like a literal demo of a game compared to a game like this
