8911809 No.8911809 [Reply] [Original]

>DUDE VILLAGE IS THE BEST PART OF THE GAME
I hear this all the time, and man, what a fucking shit take. how can you seriously think this? it's the most generic and mundane part of the game by far. all you do is kill a few of the easiest enemies and loot some houses. that's it. it's still fantastic on its own merits, but it isn't even close to the best part of the game. later areas like the regenerators, sewer fight against the "right hand", the two gigantes, the fucking worm thing in the shipping containers... the game just gets better and better until the end. I don't know how village could be your favorite part of the game unless you suck and got filtered hard later on.

>> No.8911819

>>8911809
Regenerators are dull to fight. It's just sniping them. The right hand in the sewer is mostly QTEs. The two gigantes quickly turns to just ONE gigante so it's not really anything new.

I will agree the game keeps getting better, but there's something very satisfying about just fighting hoards of the game's easiest enemy.

regenerators aren't dull your first time around and they still have the creepy factor even once you're a pro. I agree the later encounters arent necessarily "hard" per se but they're a fuck ton more interesting than anything in village. it also depends a lot on your equipment, too -- semi auto sniper or RPG make the game easy mode. I never dislike running through village again but there's no strategy or thought involved because of how simple it is. I at least need to know the right way to take out the later enemies rather than brute forcing, and there are some segments where even a good player can get boned if you waste too much of the wrong ammo. whole game is amazing but I've seen a lot of people who act like the village is great and everything else is mediocre or something, and I just dont get that.

To say there's no strategy or thought in the beginning is completely wrong. The reason RE4 is so great is because it constantly demands the player make decisions and come up with strategies on the fly.

Those people that say anything past the village is lousy are morons.

>> No.8911878

>>8911872
let me restate: there's strategy, but it only applies the first few times around. once you know the game by heart, it loses any draw. you only have a limited selection of weapons and abilities at your disposal, you can only modify your gameplay so much. once you start getting more items though, the game completely opens up and every run can be drastically different.

>> No.8911880

>The two gigantes quickly turns to just ONE gigante
That's why r-type kept the defeated enemy around with infinite health and made them both die at the same time.

>> No.8911882

>>8911880
to be fair you may not realize that you can kill one of them so easily the first time around, and depending on where they move you might not have the chance. if they circle around the pit and you're low on ammo, that fight can be game over.

IMO the game has perfect pacing. each segment has its own kind of flow. village is sort of low key and creepy, encourages you to explore and take your time as you're introduced to the game's world and mechanics. castle ramps up the difficulty and reduces the size of areas, makes the game feel more tense and claustrophobic and is filled with tricks and traps. then in island the game really starts to pick up and the action movie vibe kicks in, exploration and puzzles become secondhand to the combat and you just blast your way to the end with a few minor periods of downtime to prevent you from getting overwhelmed. superb design.

Food-for-thought chapter summaries.
1-1: Cool opening, introduces traps, has dog choice, crazy AND dynamic village fight. Villagers are fun to fight because many of them can do a ranged attack at-will. Farm introduces animals and collectable treasures, as well as the pendant minigame. Introduces QTEs and the fun dynamite enemies. Excellent.
1-2: Meet Luis and the Merchant, the cool valley fortress fight, the good factory area or whatever afterward, and your first stupid puzzle. Short but sweet.
1-3: Wander through village, first mandatory chainsaw, wander quietly through village and church yard, cool swamp fight, Del Lago boss which is only OK but quite memorable. Decent.
2-1: First plagas, waterfall puzzle, El Gigante, church puzzle. Short, more horror than before, but kind of tame.
2-2: Escort Ashley through church yard, village, farm, and then the cabin hold-out. Lots of intensity after the quieter chapter before. Mostly repeated areas, but OK overall.
2-3: Left/right ambush choice, cable car, Mendez fight, rush to castle entrance. Lots of variety.
3-1: Catapults, intro to zealots. Due to suplexes and weaker plagas, I feel these are easier enemies than villagers, although the shield guys are good. Feel flavorful. Meet Salazar. Fight Garrador, do awesome Water Room fight, separating the boys from the men. Add shooting gallery. Fantastic chapter.
3-2: Bugs, gatling gun, hedge maze, (re)meet Ada. Kinda goofy, but some tough fights and memorable bits.
3-3: Cage battle, free RPG, new plagas, Luis dies. Trash chapter.
3-4: Ashley segment. Good switch-up.
4-1: Lava room, spiky ceiling, drill machine, knights, bug hive, clock tower, pit, executioner fight. Very crazy chapter, goofy but exciting.
4-2: Plagas mine, two gigantes, bug caves. Feels like padding.
4-3: Ruins, mine car ride. Semi-padding.
4-4: Giant statue, Salazar fight. Meh.

5-1: Military base exterior and interior. First regenerator. Waste disposal. Long chapter, mostly combat. Doesn't make sense that soldiers use stun batons and hammers, wear scrap armor metal, and generally use crossbows over guns. Basically they are still the zealots except you can't suplex them and some wear helmets. The chaingunners are more dangerous than the chainsaws and garradors. Not a lot of memorable set pieces or plot tension going on here, OK chapter.
5-2: Down into trash disposal and land next to regenerator with Ashley, foundry fight, regenerator rooms, giant bulldozer, Saddler magics Ashley away. Feels like a continuation of the already-long previous chapter, so, meh.
5-3: Krauser duel, laser QTEs, U3 boss fight, Krauser boss fight. Better, I have no idea why they didn't sprinkle some of this into the earlier two chapters. Good.
5-4: Helicopter support, big outdoor base fight with chaingunner, plagas removal room. Some fun fights but nothing particularly flashy or memorable besides Mike giving it his all.
Final: Saddler fight, no way fag. OK.

My personal summary: Castle has better highs, but is inconsistent in pacing. It should have been slightly smaller, so that time could have been spent rearranging and polishing the island. The island also needed some more memorable set pieces. While the village re-uses areas the most, it also has the best balance of puzzles, action, plot movement, memorable set pieces, treasure, horror, Ashley, and merchant progression. It also has nifty things like the eggs and fish. I love the castle, but I can see the argument that the village is more refined.

why is it called "4 resident evil"
isn't it backwards

He's of course exaggerating a little bit, but I really love how purposefully re4 plays up the "you are an American against the world" thing to such a campy degree.

It's like a backwards-looking "P", so it looks like it says "President evil". This refers to Saddler's plot to infect the US President with a Plagas, using Ashley as the vector. The way they hide it on the cover is probably the single largest piece of proof that he succeeds in doing so, since he has developed a method of implanting a Plagas variant that cannot be removed through the usual means. In case someone doubts me because they haven't seen this theory before (I did just invent it, to their defense), other evidence includes:
1) the regenerators are shown bearing multiple Plagas at once, proving to the player that it is possible for one individual to have multiple parasites in them
2) Saddler "rather conveniently" has a "Plagas removal room" that he leaves in the path of Leon and Ashley. Why would he need to build such a thing unless he explicitly wants to leave one in place to assure Leon that he has succeeded in removing the Plagas from Ashley? It works on removing the basic parasite from Ashley, but the stealth variant remains.
It's up in the air whether Leon has a stealth variant within him as well. Saddler wasn't expecting to die; he was just going to "fall away" U3-style and Ada caught him by surprise.

i'm finally playing re4 for the first time in my life, i just got ashley. strange that to this day i still know barely anything about the game. it's pretty good. aside from the story, not sure why re5 got all the hate it did, it plays the same as this

game journalists forgot what RE tone was inbetween 4 and 5. Capcom needed to keep farming games inbetween 4 and 5 to remind people that these games have always been fucking stupid. Also people wanted games to be more art and assumed a long running thing like RE would take itself a bit more seriously.

there's something gratifying about the way ashley will climb into a dumpster at your command and snap upright when you whistle afterward and i'm not sure what that says about me

>it plays the same
absolutely not.
RE4 is purely a single player focused experience.
RE5 was designed with co-op in mind at the cost of turning the single player experience into a tedious AI babysitting slog.

i've only ever played it co-op and never would pivot from that, so beyond those considerations the gunplay is the same and that's the meat of it. weapons, items, and enemy composition are pretty similar in re5 from what i remember, everything built off re4 in some way it seems, there's even QTEs

It's the best part of the game because the tone is still grounded and there is a bit of atmosphere going on because you are still not sure how the game feels.

Then you leave the village and all the cringe cheese kicks in

when they're right, they're right. the old games were cheesy but even re4 wasn't a straight up generic action game in the way 5 is.
