Are there any anime based retro games that are actually decent?
I often stumble across games based on anime I watched and I'm like "oh sweet this anime got a game" just to find out its a poor puzzle game or something like this.

pic kinda related but its an example for a shit game

This one is surprisingly not crap. It's a nice and short platformer. The controls are tight, the graphics are ok and it's faithful to the source material.

>> No.8910283

Magical Knight Rayearth on the Saturn is good. I am guessing you are not counting fighting games since they are basically just reskins of the dev studios more popular games but the JoJo ones are great.

>> No.8910292

The Jojo fighting game is a given.
There's Yokai Buster for SNES, which is probably more popular than whatever manga it was based on.

>> No.8910302

>>8910292
Even then, Yokai Buster was a reskin of a Jetsons game.
It had more content than the original Jetsons game though, stuff like additional stages, cheat codes, a bonus stage, and a new final boss.

Anyone play the Votoms games for SNES or PS2? They actually look pretty alright.

Some people write this off as just being a Valis clone but I think it's a lot better than any of those games and easily one of the better platformers on the console.

Slayers for SNES. I like the dialogues. The sprites are ugly and the OST isn't that good.

The only games I can think of are Fist of the North Star (SMS), Gundam Wing: Endless Duel (SNES) and Sailor Moon (arcade). They're kind of the opposite of what you're talking about, in that I don't care for the TV shows they are based on, but the games are decent..

Yes, watch the anime first. At the very least the first season.
Also the console beat 'em ups are good too.
I also recommend the fighting games on Super Famicom.

The Time Bokan series has some vertical shooters on the PSX/Saturn that are pretty fun though they are pretty standard of the genre. They also had a kart racer, an rpg on the Wonderswan, and whatever the hell New Yatterman: Nandai Kandai Yajirobe on the Super Famicom is supposed to be. The shooters are probably the best of the games though.

I remember playing a gunbuster game for PC Engine, basically a VN type game where you had to follow the original story and if you selected the wrong answers you'd lose and see some ecchi Noriko cutscenes, so it was very worth losing to it.

The arcade game is one of the best games ever made. It would really help to see season 1 (what it's based off of) first since many of the stages are from the show, and most/all the bosses are too.

I'm probably in a minority but I thought the RPG sucked hard. Completely separate story from the show so it's not necessary to watch it first other than to know the characters. Though all the enemies are OC Donut Steels anyway.
