How the fuck should I play this for the first time?
I've played through Duke Nukem and Shadow Warrior and they were fine, but Doom pisses me off. There are like a million different mods for it (I'm not gonna call them wads, fuck off) and some of the most recommended ones like Brutal Doom seem to change too much from the original.

Years ago I downloaded some random one, but not being able to aim up and down was simply not acceptable for me so I deleted it in 2 minutes. I want some basic improvements to graphics and gameplay.
Please advise and please be kind.

Like everyone else said use gzdoom for convenience. Use vertical mouse look and jumping if you want, but follow this video to set up the graphics so they have the charm of the original but still 1080p and 60fps. The default gzdoom graphical settings fuck the vibe up and make the game look cheap. Have fun anon

Play the base game? Why would you fuck around with a bunch of mods which completely changes the entire game on your first go?

>>8907936
Original was designed for playing with keyboard and mouse turning. You can't look up and down in the original, but you don't like need to either, the only big hindrance with the original .exe is the mousewalking (ergo moving the mouse back and forth to move back and forth), which is great for Wolfenstein 3D, and awful for any game after it, such as Doom.
Thankfully, most sourceports let you turn that behavior off (usually having it off by default), even the new official ports do, and there's even tricks you can do to turn it off for the original .exe if you wanted to.

Sourceports such as GzDoom allow you to look up and down with free mouselook, and you can play the game that way if you absolutely have to, it won't make a gigantic difference for most of the game. Just make sure to turn off the Bilinear Filter in options first, it looks like shit.

>>8907981
I feel the lack of any up/down doesn't make an appreciable difference for speed, but maybe I'm just really used to keeping my view level while moving around.
Just vanilla Doom with mouseturning and WASD plays sweet as fuck though, that's for sure, the only thing they got wrong was not including a proper option for toggling mouse-walking while using the mouse for turning.

Doom 1 doesn't have all that much verticality, so you end up really not actually needing it.
Doom 2 uses a bit more but you have enough space to move those times.

Final Doom gets a bit meaner, the presumption was still that you can't look up or down, but occasionally that's used against you to fuck with you. For instance there's a map in Plutonia where some chaingunners are firing away at you from a distance, but they're out of auto-aim distance (theirs is farther than yours so they can still reach you if you stand out in the open).
The solution is to use the rocket launcher provided and then hit them with splash damage from the rockets exploding above them, so it's not like the level is unfair to you, it just uses Doom's original limitation against you and has you figure it out.

Doom 64 is a bit of a different beast, but retains the vertically locked view. There's ways to play that with freelook if you really want to though. Either way, it's a really fun game if you enjoy classic Doom.

Judging by the attitude and ignorance, he's probably a kid who doesn't know better, but kids can learn. If he likes Doom in GzDoom, he'll probably give regular Doom a try and discover that it's still really fun.

Doom is straightforward and fun, easy to learn but with a real high skill ceiling that you can keep reaching for for years if you want to. Someone will always make a greater challenge if you seek it.

>> No.8908517

>>8908037
It's gonna make the game a little bit easier for him on occasion, but let's be real here, freelook doesn't make a big difference in most of the combat in the game, shootable switches that require you to reach a specific height are rare (in fact, are there any in the iwad maps?), and it really only actually changes the difficulty at the very end of Doom 2, and you and me both know that Icon Of Sin just isn't that great of a level even when it's harder to time those shots, he's not exactly missing anything amazing at that part.

He'll play it wrong maybe, but so did many kids in the 90s and 2000s (how many young boys played exclusively with cheats back then?), he's got an entire lifetime to right it if he actually gets a taste for the game.

Freelook only makes a few things a little easier on occasion, there's only one thing in Doom 2 where it makes a single thing much easier.

The whole 'infinite height' thing makes a bigger difference, but disabling that gives flying monsters a massive edge in return because now they can freely pass over a crowd of monsters on the ground as well as move above and below each other, so it can make some encounters a lot harder.

I figure, the kid may be stubborn about experiencing the game the right way, but GzDoom is largely pretty close to the original game in most ways, and if he gets a taste for it, maybe he'll eventually give the vanilla experience a chance.

I've seen zoomers on that trajectory before.

I used GZDoom and turned off jumping and vertical aiming.
Doom is a very different type of game from most modern FPS so it's a bad idea to try to make the controls exactly like them. The combat and map design are not designed around jumping, and there's very generous auto-aim so you don't need vertical aiming.
It's not a point-and-click modern shooter. It has much more complex/deliberate map design and enemy placement, but simpler aiming. Movement/positioning is a lot more important than accuracy.

The only real difference freelook makes in regular gameplay is that flying enemies on screen are coded to be in the player's view it all times, so when you freelook up, a Cacodemon (to give an example) will fly up to match your FOV.

Also ignore any vanilla "freelook is cheating" purist faggots, OP. You ever notice how when you freelook in Duke3D, the perspective starts gettting warped the further you look up and down? That's the exact reason why there wasn't freelooking in DOS Doom.

Doom doesn't actually have any vertical axis. Everything is on a horizontal plane. There is no aiming up and down. It looks like a 3D game, but it's really a 2D game, with a first-person perspective and fake up-and-down movement that doesn't affect gameplay at all. If there is an enemy "above" you, you can shoot below it, and you will still hit it.

If you're softcock casual scum, yeah. I strongly advise real men to just get used to it. If you need to change how the game plays, why not just stick to ports?

The extra precise movement it allows can be quite helpful on narrow walkways and in tight spaces (like in any modern Romero map), too. I actually use it often in both vanilla and Crispy Doom. I even have a key bound to temporarily disable mouselook and reactivate mouse movement in GZDoom because it's so useful. Nobody should play without it.

>> No.8923127

>>8922719
You're in a real minority. The mouse movement is good for Wolfenstein 3D because all terrain is flat and you always stop on a dime, whereas terrain varies a lot in Doom and you always have momentum.

Even back in the day we'd do shit like NoVert or picking out one of the rollers from the mouse when playing. At least the people I was around.
There's a good reason every sourceport, including the ones which retain just Vanilla gameplay, lets you play without it. Even the new official ones.

People don't like mouse movement for the vast majority of games, and the world had already turned its back on it by the late 90s.
