If you were even mildly interested in video games then you were reading magazines at the newstand while your parents shopped or reading one your more gamer-interested friends had.
If you played games as your main hobby you subscribed to at least one magazine or tried out trial offers.
Final Fantasy VII was definitely over into the "video games are my primary hobby" interest for players so they would have mostly known.

Even introverted kids got dragged out to the stores by their parents. I don't care about the extreme outliers that literally never went anywhere.
>Or maybe you lived in an area that was distinctly stuck in the past.
I lived in a place that was stuck in the past and we still had grocery stores with magazine stand and the USPS. I had no issues getting magazines.

I'm generalizing because guess what: I'm talking in a general sense of the time and population. Of course there were always exceptions, but that's exactly what they were. You can always find an exception. But don't use it as the standard in a general discussion.

Because they aren't. Avid is a word that actually has a specific meaning that means a great interest in a subject and the implication of spending much time researching it. A person who is an avid fan of something is expected to be highly knowledgeable about the subject.

You played a lot of games but that didn't make you an avid gamer.

Gaming Magazines were niche, but huge during the 90s, at least in Canada. If you wanted to find out about the hottest games, you'd pick up a magazine.

>as for the notion of having spending money

You could just go into a store, read the magazine, and leave. I don't know how it is in other places, but that's how it was in my store. You didn't need any money if you wanted to know what's coming out. Plus, there was a huge recession at the start of the decade so I don't think many people were buying anything.

Serious answer to this shit trainwreck of a thread:

If you were into JRPGs you knew there were plenty of Japanese games that didn't get localized for the US. It was more of a surprise that Squaresoft was ditching Nintendo for Sony. But after the whole Nintendo CD saga this was understandable.

If you didn't follow JRPGs then you probably didn't know or care that they skipped a bunch of numbers.

Media wasn't nearly as available as it is now. You were limited to whatever you could get from your local shops. If I rented a tape from Video Ezy, I just accepted that I wouldn't be able to watch a series from beginning to end. It was a similar thing with game series. Hell, sometimes you didn't even know that games had sequels or prequels. Information on the internet was also way less reliable than it is now.

These days, you can instantly download any video or game you want and find at least five wikis dedicated to them with a google search.

ff7 is really that good. but the beginning kind of sucks imo. once you get out of the city the game begins and it's 9/10. imo it's a bit frustrating to get past that initial stuff, but once you do the world opens up, there's fun challenges and progression, the story is top notch (10/10), and there's a ton of side stuff to do that're like mini games but most are done really well. plus collecting the summons and magic is really satisfying as well as defeating a few of the world map bosses. if you can make it past the beginning you'll be glad you did. you end up getting an airship and a nice villa too.
the amount of legitimately fun and quality content in that game is probably unmatched to this day as far as console games go.. hell, even compared to most pc games.

I honestly didn't like FF7 that much when it came out, because I was a huge fan of the 2D games and the art style just threw me a bit. I really liked 8 and 9 when they came out, but something about 7 just didn't quite click with me. It's still not my favorite, but I know I'm in the minority on that.

oh yes it's clearly the superior game. imagine video game mags teasing with screenshots of secret of mana 2, ff5, dragon quest 5,6 etc - it was an embarrassment of riches. and then getting this instead, custom made for "western sensibilities". they even cancelled the japanese release, lol. yeah. and all the while nintendo not shutting up about how jrpgs are supposedly "too complex" for western audiences. you have no idea how aggrevating that shit was unless you were there. so by all means enjoy evermore, it's obviously what you deserve.

You're not alone. I was getting into PSX gaming when it came out and boy, was it sure hyped.
However, though there were a lot of things about the game I did like (the materia system, the overall scope of the game and amount of content), I found the story meandering and the characters just plain unlikable. Didn't enjoy it.

I'd heard of FF3/6, and it looked cool, but I never had a chance to play it. The pictures and videos I saw in previews looked pretty mind blowing, and it was the first game I had on my PSX. I got to the part where you revisit Midgar on my own, but I've never been much of an RPG person, so I bought a guide and restarted. I had to play through the game several times before concluding this game is a mixed bag. Basically, I think FF7 is a lot of great ideas executed poorly. Although I'm fine with how the materia system worked.

If they'd released it with a good translation and done anything other than those weird block figures, I probably would've enjoyed it a lot more.

One of these days I'll replay it with some good romhacks.

most Russians don't care about the Western internet. not sure how many people cared THAT much about SMB2 anyway. I think here there's far less of "cult" status that SMB2 and 3 have here. way more people gave a fuck about Battle City, Contra, etc.
as for "savvy Russian kids", see, in the early 90s console gaming was in its infancy in Russia. Dendy came out in late '92 and we knew jack shit about consoles prior to that. not that many people knew that Dendy wasn't a real brand, that it was in reality a clone of NES. there wasn't any official mag like Nintendo Power to explain that. other few mags were often similarly clueless. we even had a whole Dendy TV show where the host often didn't know any better about games either. so no one knew any better. we got better video game media later, but then the Dendy era rapidly ended, with PS1 and PC rapidly replacing it, so obviously everyone stopped caring about about Dendy very quickly.
so basically when everyone actually played Dendy, there wasn't much accurate info on anything, and when there was, no one was playing Dendy anymore.

I had looked around for 4-6 until I read in a gaming magazine that certain FFs were Japan only and this was to catch the west up in numbering. I then got Anthology sometime after FFVIII was released and played through V, which I enjoyed enough for multiple playthroughs over the years.

It took me a lot longer to play through III, but it was pretty great too. I played an NES fan translation. I tried to play through FFII, but have never finished it because I didn't like cheesing the battle system to grind stats on.

I got FF7 back when it was released and it was the first FF game I played. The fact that it was number 7 meant nothing to me and I never made any attempt to even locate the earlier games. It's still the earliest FF game that I've played and will likely remain that way because I don't like JRPGs anymore. Point being, people didn't care back then.
