My little cousin had this game, and I wanted to see how a modern (at the time) Sonic racer would be. I never got passed the desert stage, cause I didn't know what the fuck I was doing. Great music though, Splash Canyon is by far my favourite track.

It's not a bad game but the controls are confusing as fuck. I remember struggling with third race because I couldn't finish 1st no matter what. Then I learned cutting corners and doing proper boost.
Then I got stuck in Tails' jungle race and dropped the game because every race requires you to perform certain actions for winning while not explaining how.

Zero Gravity was a better game to me but Riders 1 was like more challenging, you had to actually spend time with the game and learn how to do shit.

I remember this being one of the last games that really made me rage, the learning curve is steeper than usual but once you get the hang of it it can be pretty fun. Only wish they didn't force you to rotate the stick like in Mario Party during those zipline segments.

Are you me?
When my friend and I rented the game years ago we were stuck on the first race for maybe 10 minutes due to the stiff controls, then gave up after about 5 attempts at the Jungle (he had to end up taking over because I was about to tard rage).
He managed to power through the game the next day.

I plan on giving Riders another shot after dropping it a decade ago, but I have a feeling I'll lose patience with it quickly like I have with Secret Rings.

Heh.
I remember telling my friend about how difficult that race is and getting response like "What? Flying characters' stages are the easiest ones". After that, I was raging even more, feeling my own weakness. I thought that i'm that bad at games so I can't do the easiest shit and just lost any motivation to continue.

The actual trick in that jungle race is that you need to use trampolines to reach boost rings located up in the air. And it's not the easy task since the controls and physics are so retarded. Jungle and Factory (where you play as Knuckles) are probably the hardest races, everything else is fine once you'll get hang of it.

Wait. Hold on.
Is it in the rules that Sonic can't run because he'd always win or why is he not running fast?

Basically yes
Extreme Gear hoverboards are different kind of speed and Sonic actually gets owned by Jet the very first time he tries to use it.

Then Eggman makes a tournament where everybody should use hoverboards to race.
