The first game is in my top 3 Famicom RPGs with Final Fantasy II and Dragon Quest 2. Top 5 would be Metal Max and Shin Megami Tensei II.

Earthbound was okay but it had too many things that were "just like in the first game" for no reason or real sense given, and gameplay just wasn't as good as in the first.

I couldn't stand 3. Overrated hipster garbage is what describes it best and I don't use that word often.

Magic Fry Pan has low accuracy. Could be useful but only for bosses. So like, if you have the patience for just one 1/128 item, the Sword of Kings is the best you can go for.

He's there to make sure a battle flag gets set so the game doesn't crash during certain parts. Earthbound has pure spaghetti coding, even Iwata who was basically Japanese John Carmack couldn't fix all of the game's problems when he was called to save the project since the other coders fucked everything up.

What romhacks offer the best way to play Mother 1 and 2 in English?
I'm looking for mods for these two games that offer the most uncensored experience, while also fixing some issues with pacing, but still remaining as vanilla as possible.
Mother 1 Restored seems pretty recent, and does seem like the best way, but there are so many different "definitive" hacks. I'm not sure if this one makes progression more like Earth Bound Easy or the GBA version
Mother 2 Perfect Edition and Maternalbound Redux both seem like good versions of Mother 2, but I'm worried that they might have changed too much, like new sprites.
What do you guys think? Obviously I'm not going to play these games censored. But I still want a fan's opinion on this, and the mods for these games in general.

Only played the "official" version of Mother 1 but the restored patch seems fine. I've played both the original version of Earthbound and Maternalbound Redux and I think it was good QoL/decenorship patch. The only real sprite changes it does is adding more overworld sprites to the enemies that didn't have unique ones before and removing some censorship, though there is one weird change in that Ness has his hat removed from his naked sprite in magicant but other than that it's completely fine.

I suppose that sort of addition isn't bad, I was sort of concerned about if things like new sprites for the characters would add context where there wasn't any before, and some mods for both these games claim to redraw all enemy sprites.
It's very easy to get lost in these mods, and some are so recent and claim "definitiveness" it's difficult to know if it really is.

Maternalbound doesn't really add any context other than that one odd thing I mentioned, I think it's fine for a first playthrough of the game and it's probably the best patch out there for Earthbound. The only mod I know of that claims to redraw enemy sprites is Mother 2 Deluxe, which is more of a hardmode hack with new content made for people who have already played the game.

I don't mind though, I think the album has more SOUL with him singing it himself, and if he just got all of the original vocalists back it would probably just be a worse version of the original instead of being something unique and different.

shit anon, you seem to know more about me regarding these albums.
i guess you're right about the SOUL part, suzuki had no obligation to even make the album, it seems like a passion project first and foremost. aside from the vocals, the instrumentals sound a hell of a lot better.
but part of the appeal to the original album has to me is how fucking weird it is, the ugly soulless 80s synths, the fact that they got english singers to actually perform on it, flying man being a completely original song, catherine's weird vocals. it's an oddity but i wouldn't have it any other way.

It's shame Catherine never did any other albums, she had a great voice. Still can't believe she did that album when she was only 14. Speaking of passion projects, Itoi's been putting out a bunch of Mother merch the past few years and even put together some collaboration mangas where he hired a bunch of random artists to make art for them. Unfortunately no one's fucking scanned or uploaded them anywhere as far as I can tell so you'll have to import a copy if you wanna read them. Itoi has a bunch of other random Mother-related merch as well, like books which just contain all of the dialogue of each Mother game for some reason, and he even went so far to hire playtesters to make sure they got every single line of dialogue. I really don't get the point of them. I hope one day Itoi nudges Nintendo and gets them to make a remake of Mother 1, just for an excuse to have more remixed Mother 1 tracks.

Seems like it's a lot of older devs that got inspiration from books so I'm guessing it's that they didn't always have electronics available to take up a lot of their time. A lot of books don't take very long to read either and can be finished in about the time it takes to watch a movie or two anyway.

I think I figured out the best way. Mother 1 Restored seems the most appropriate with its de-censorship and script changes, and it following the 1+2 version.
For Mother 2, it looks like both Perfect Edition and Maternalbound Redux change too much to the point of muddying up the game. Overworld Sprites for all the enemies muddies up the visuals. adding hats to all the robot versions of the characters takes away something honestly, there ARE redrawn battle sprites, plus they don't even bother changing the Pencil back to an Octopus.
There is a version of the original MaternalBound that doesn't change as much and makes it closer to the Japanese version called the "literal edition" which, I'm not too into "literal translations" but this seems like the best bet to playing a definitive Mother 2. Though it might still change Ness losing his hat in Magicant.

Got the full trilogy in spanish.
First book was my favorite, when they're kids. 2nd and 3rd books are weird, I should read it all over again, but yeah it somehow keeps getting more and more depressing and miserable.
The unused content found in the Mother 3 ROM shows that there was supposed to be a much darker ending. Itoi himself said that the original N64 game was going to have a grim ending, but he changed his mind when he finished the GBA and decided to give it a more optimistic (or rather, ambiguous) ending, since he became a "better person", or something like that.
Maybe he just didn't want it to be overly dark and depressive.

The secret is that "drawing inspiration" is just ripping things off. But you put your own little spin on it so it seems different. So for example, think of a story you like, but that you would have preferred to be a bit different. Maybe the characters weren't good enough or the ending didn't suit you. Then remake it yourself but fix those things, change the setting, names, etc. You have no been "inspired."

In the case of Mother 3, it's more like a homage, since Itoi used the same names from the characters of the book (Lucas and Claus). There are some parallels you can make about the book and the game (twins that get separated, their mom dies, soldiers invade their place etc) but the whole story is very different. Yeah Itoi was always clear about the stuff that inspired him. He namedropped the Agota Kristof books as well as Sirens of Titan, where I think he got inspiration for Pokey/Porky, a character very similar to this book's antagonist, Rumfoord, a space-time traveller, or something close to that, as well as some other things (the lumine hall comes to mind).
The Claus and Lucas books were a good read but super depressive. The Sirens of Titan, however, was a fantastic sci-fi read, very Earthbound-y too, it's definitely recommended for fans of the games.
Also, the english version of Symphony of the Night named one of the bosses after one of Kurt Vonnegut's books too, Grandfalloon (this boss is called Legion in the japanese original)

Seems like Nintendo won't do anything more than cameos in other games with Mother unless Itoi is onboard... which is probably how it should be but it basically ties everyones hands if the idea man doesn't have time or is disinterested in manning the project. We see this a lot with Japanese game devs: not wanting to continue or reboot a series because the original staff won't or aren't available to take charge.

If Gunpei Yokoi were still alive, the possibility of a reboot/remake/sequel to StarTropics having been made by now would have been fairly high... eh, maybe.

There's good QoL of life patches like Maternalbound Redux and difficulty/rebalance patches like Mother 2 Deluxe, but there's really no good full original story romhacks like with other games. Earthbound romhacking is pure pain since the game is spaghetti code and documentation and romhacking tools for it suck compared to other games like Super Mario World or the GBA Fire Emblems.

the jap side is fine from what I've seen, mostly just fan artists and fujos. I think some of the fanbase in japan spawned a bunch of Mother-inspired RPGmaker games though, like Towelket.

Also apparently Mother 4 was barely ever in development and most of the work done for the game was just done to make the trailers, I doubt Oddity or the new Mother 4 will ever get finished just like every other fangame. I think the only non-romhack Mother fangame to be completed is Cognitive Dissonance.

There's always an audience for fangames, though I agree calling it Mother 4 in the first place was stupid. I do wish the Earthbound romhacking scene was more active though, but I guess RPGmaker is just way easier to use if you want to make an RPG.

Also I don't think Nintendo could take down Mother fangames, since Itoi has at least some partial ownership of the IP since he always has to be credited whenever Nintendo does anything with the IP, and Itoi seems to have free reign to pump out as much Mother merch as he wants.

Mother 3 basically cemented that what Mother is is just whatever Itoi wants it to be. It's too intricately linked to him to make a new Mother game without his involvement, if it wasn't obvious by the copyright.
One day, a fan-made "Mother 4" will come out, likely after Itoi dies, and it will be forgotten very soon after.
Ultimately, Mother fans in the West are fairly mentally ill, add that on the mental illness of fan game makers, and you get projects that will never ever come out and be sloppy messes when they do.
