Is it the greatest beat em up series of all time? Which is your favorite in the series?

The best in the series hands down is Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones.

What I have always wondered is WHY does Double Dragon 3 on NES have such a bad rep among retro gamers? Is it just because AVGN shit on it? Technos' direct involvement with this title makes up for the terrible quality of the arcade game. While the NES version is based loosely on the arcade game, it deviates from the progenitor in a positive way. With the entire DD trilogy on the NES, Technos had generally corrected the mistakes of the arcade counterparts (where they existed) and added additional features to entice console gamers. Except for the lack of a two-player mode in the first game, Technos went up to bat and hit a home run three times in a row on Nintendo's first console. Not only does Double Dragon 3: The Sacred Stones prove to be the best version of the game on any console, it also proves to be the BEST Double Dragon game in the entire series.

>Is it the greatest beat em up series of all time?

It's iconic for the genre, but not even close to being to the greatest

> Which is your favorite in the series?

As a kid, I played III a lot. (Well, i just used skip levels trick to rush through the game most of the time, but I also played it seriously).
As an adult, I really like first one for NES.
There's something kino about it.

Not sure but it is usually recognized as the first game in history to have microtransactions as we know them today. You are offered upgrades to your stats, weapons and extra lives in a shop between some stages that you can only obtain by inserting quarters to purchase the items. You have to literally pay real money for the in game shit just like modern microtransactions. There is no other way to earn them. The home ports that actually kept the shop added in game coins to collect from enemies to purchase items.

The original arcade version of Double Dragon III wasn't developed by Technos. It was a developer that had never worked on the series before which is why it's so much different. Technos did do the NES port and tried to fix alot of the shitty stuff in the arcade version with mixed results.

Unfortunately the game is shit on by fans today mostly because of the US port. It was made way harder (probably to keep people from beating it on a weekend rental). You get like one life and no continues in the US version.

Really? Because I swear I recall the Genesis port taking your in-game credits used for continues as the cost for extra power-ups.

I think you're correct. In fact I think the only version that added coins was the Gameboy version. My mistake.

But the arcade version only took real money which is crazy but also seems like something other companies would have added in their games to make more money. I'm kind of surprised we didn't see more arcade games with stuff like that to be honest.

I still haven't beaten DD1 on NES. I always got filtered in the last stage. even if I grinded for moves in the early game. Any tip for that last stage?

and every time I try to bring myself to play DD3 I quit in the second stage. Goddamn fuck this game. The long ass dialogue and intro sequence also doesn't help.

The Arcade version of Double Dragon 3 is kinda overhated. Everyone always whines about the whole "pay extra credits for extra moves and new characters" shit, but they actually removed that in the revised JP version in favor of a normal character select feature.

It's a traceover of a traceover. The cover artist traced over an in-game cutscene, which in turn was traced over a publicity still of Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris from Return of the Dragon.
