I'm waiting for one of them to adopt the same 1440p screen from the pocket. The resolution of most of these devices really hampers them IMO, you can't really get satisfactory scaling with every device. Either your focusing on 240p stuff or GBA/handheld stuff, where as 1440p would scale with a ton of things, or at the very least the PPI would be so high that you could interpolate pixels and you wouldn't even be able to tell it wasn't native

I bought a Powkiddy v90 a couple weeks ago, was planning on just messing with it then giving to a kid relative as a gift, but honestly its been pretty good. With CFW SNES is actually mostly good. Ironically I think GBA suffers the most, it runs full speed mostly but the games look ass because of the piss poor scaling.

I think the lightweight + how fast it is to boot into games has got me playing stuff more than I otherwise would. I've had entire romsets on a 3ds before but it takes a billion years to boot into a game on there that it put me off (and the form factor sucks)

Should retro handhelds stop caring about power that much now given the leap in power required to emulate later consoles is quite high and the constraints mean PC handheld tier sizes? Besides the obvious dedicated consoles (Game boy, GBA, PSP) I have four emulation devices, acquired thru the years:

GPH Wiz
Odroid GO
Anbernic RG300
Anbernic RG351P

The one I use the most is still the Odroid GO, I am fascinated by its capabilities despite the obvious limitations (mostly thanks to the custom firmware). The Wiz was amazing but sadly it got bricked beyond repair years ago (that screen, tho). The RG300 is a mixed bag, it's small enough to be satisfying but it feels like it's always one step beyond what it's actually trying to achieve. And finally, the RG351 instead has the opposite problem, it seems even too much for the games I actually want to play with.

steam deck and miyoo mini arrived in the same day and honestly i see no reason to use my other handhelds now. i think i could easily call them my favorites. there is a lot of whiplash going between the massive steam deck and the tiny miyoo mini though.
maybe ill still use the rg351v sometimes, but ive just really enjoyed these two new devices over the past week.
on my steam deck, i started a new animal crossing town and ive also been playing we love katamari. when im done with katamari, im gonna start breath of fire dragon quarter. ill also be playing jsrf when i bother with configuring xemu.
on my miyoo mini, i played some jumping flash to test out playstation emulation, and it's way better than i thought. i heard the device didnt handle psx well, which ended up not being true. im sure maybe a few games wont run well, but everything ive tried is full speed or only an occasional hiccup. also played some streets of rage 2 (playing sor4 on game pass before it left made me want to go back. fuckin amazing game) and parappa the rapper (2nd playthrough. i think i was too harsh the first time i played it. it's pretty cozy for a rhythm game).

I am, if your friend did the clicky tactile shoulder buttons plus metal replacements then I recommend cutting up a mechanical pencil spring and installing the smaller springs you make into the shoulders, takes a bit to get them the right size to not be too tough, but reduces rattle in the shell to almost nothing and makes the shoulders feel a bit nicer.

>> No.8883178

>>8882571
I personally installed the V2 funny playing ips mod, as well as clicky shoulder buttons and a rechargeable battery with usb-c for charging. Those are really the only things you need to make it a modern experience, but if you want to go a step further I also installed the helder gametech amp+speaker+power cleaner to reduce buzz and it's pretty cool even if I don't really use it to full effect. It's useless bragging rights but my GBA gets louder than a lot of people's phones with that amp mod.

Reshelling is pure preference as long as you get a quality kit, there are shells made specifically for the IPS kits which negate having to cut up the shell to install them if you care about keeping your original shell stock but honestly either ways fine and won't prevent it from being reverted to stock.

Does your dpad on yours feel really annoying in that you have to press down harder than on a normal 3ds to register an input? And does your circle pad also feel like it has a bit of stickyness to it?

>> No.8888201

>>8887504
No, quite the opposite. The 2ds presses seem much lighter than my n3ds and slightly lighter than my well used launch XL. I believe the 2ds uses SNES type conductives whereas the other models have clicky domes.

The circle pad on one of my refurb 2ds's isn't as smooth as the others.

I've never bought any chink handheld before, and I really want to replay some GBA games for some reason.
Any recommendations for the first-time buyer?

>Vita
The big problem with the Vita is that it's ALMOST what you want.
It ALMOST runs every GBA game full speed that you'd want.
It ALMOST runs every SNES game full speed that you want
It does run all PSX, Vita and PSP games.

But a newer handheld console will allow you smooth play for everything up to the Dreamcast.
...Get both.

RG351p's resolution upscales perfectly for GBA
It's the best GBA...

Does it run MGBA well? Even with Runahead?

>> No.8888856

>>8888781
its good enough to use mgba at full speed. On the most demanding games I don't think there would be enough headroom for runahead though.

>> No.8888874

>>8888856
that's a bummer. Runahead is an absolute necessity for me

Not to mention the Vita has the best form factor, buttons and overall build quality, so my choice is either the chink handheld that does everyrhing right except PSP and N64 with vertical form factor or the official better build handheld that does ALMOST everything right (with still room and potential for improvement)
I swear, if these nerds tried a little harder they could improve SNES and GBA emulation on Vita.

Its not a dealbreaker for me since I ignore alot of the action games in the gba library. mostly care about turn based stuff like mother, fire emblem, advance war, etc.

Is there a legit reason to prefer a PSP over a Vita?

>> No.8888959

Dpad and buttons? An authentic feel (as devs intended) for whatever that's worth?
I dunno. If I had to buy one now I don't see why I would go for a psp. Psp games seem to just work on a vita. Maybe if I had a big pile of umd's it would be fun to play with those.

Not really, no.
The Vita costs more, but that's it.

A few ancient PSP homebrews don't work well on Vita or need the IR port like the TV remote app
UMD movie ISOs don't work in adrenaline
A few games and apps that need add-ons like the PSP camera, GPS, TV tuner

not really

in fact the psp emulator on the vita seemed to have less fuckups than actual psp hardware for ps1 conversions kek

I snagged an RG350M for $90 and I love it, but I guess I'm too miserly or too clutter averse because I could never see "collecting" this stuff. I'm going to use the thing forever as a convenient SNES/GBA/PS1/Genesis platform and I don't really have ambitions beyond that. The only other handheld I own is my childhood Game Boy brick, which hasn't seen use in decades but is obviously a treasured heirloom.

Also pic related because it cracks me up when people post their stuff and it's clearly at the title screen/first five minutes of a game

It doesn't run all ps1 games retard.
