Does it deserve to be remembered more than it is? I remember a lot of hype going into this game, but 20 years later I forget it exists. It isn't until I get reminded about it that I can recall how many hours I sunk in and how much I loved it. So what happened? Is it yet another victim of Rare being sold off to Microsoft?

Are you asking us why you forgot about a game?
What a weird question

>> No.8872627

Man, I remember being an early teen and appreciating the fact you could look up Vela's skirt while she crawled prone, and the fact it was the first (and likely the only) N64 game with boob physics.
I'd play this game well into the night. On rainy days, I'd be moving about in Tawfret because it fit the mood.
I feel you on the whole forgetfulness bit, too.
Your thread is actually the reason why I remembered it now.

>> No.8872638

I haven't played it in a long time but I remember it being very tedious and rescuing the furry dudes was often pretty bullshit.

You acknowledge yourself how it was properly marketed, so why should the big evil corporations be at the same time responsible of the fact that it's not "remembered"?
Maybe it's the fact that RARE was not exactly the most innovative company and their value was mostly in above average execution that required luck and the exact proper context in order to achieve lasting relevance.

>> No.8872686

Yeah it deserves to be remembered as a fun TPS that doesn't rely on wall-covering like modern TPSs are, this one had platforming and more arcade-like ethos.
Yeah, Rare went a bit hard at making it a requirement to rescue all the tribals AND find all the ship parts in order to get the full ending, but even without that the game is fairly long until you get to that point, and you get to fight Mizar once before you get sent back to search for the ship parts and stuff. Then again, you get upgraded at the end with the jetpack and stuff.
My favorite thing, besides the atmosphere and music is the enemy AI in this game, pretty neat.

It was more in general speaking about how this game doesn't really come up much despite being one of those heavily hyped swan songs for the N64. It had a ton of content too. Crazy it's just been pissed away into nothing

Man that stings. But you're so right. I remember Diddy Kong Racing being fucking everywhere and now it's barely a footnote for either Nintendo or Rare. Same for pretty much all the Rare N64 catalog that isn't the first Banjo, but even that one gets a lot of flack from younger gamers for being stupid and a relic of its time. I think the only reason the Rare games get brought up and all is because of Boomer millennials like myself

I absolutely loved this games as a kid but it drops off in quality after the first Mizar fight. THe whole rest of the game s just backtracking to worlds to collect ship parts. There's no more awesome bosses to fight (except fighting Mizar again at the end) and not really any other cool shit to see.

I wish it would have been more successful. Even after beating the game I still enjoy exploring the worlds and blowing up ants at the dance club. It’s by far my favorite game on the system to this day. The music is so good and I think it hits that perfect balance of nostalgia, while still being fun for ehat it is for me.

There is a romhack where you have to kill all tribals instead of save them which can be Pamusing too.

Early third person shooters are a hard sell to people now. I like it, but a lot of people aren't going to touch a game like this without dual analogue controls.

>> No.8874128

>>8872601
I got it for christmas 99 alongside DK64. I ended up playing jet force waaay more. I remember loving the atmosphere of the game and the music, also the variety of weapons. I didn't have internet at the time so exploration and possibilities were endless in my head. Unfortunatelly the enemies were very repetitive and i hated going back to save all the stupid bears. Good game overall, but a bit underwhelming if you consider Rare's quality at the time.

>> No.8874194

>>8874082
You can actually have dual controls, not analogue but you can set the C-buttons as a secondary d-pad and move in 8 directions while on aim mode. To do this you have to set the control scheme to "Expert" on options. Default only lets you move from left to right while aiming.
Many people play the whole game without knowing this and it's really game-changing.

>> No.8874346

>>8873039
It's because they didn't get a second exposure on the Wii virtual console like the other big N64 games did. A decent crowd of zoomers got into vr that way and refreshed the games in the public discourse, but with Rare only Banjo and PD with their XBLA rereleases were brought back into the public consciousness and the rest of the games are only remembered by us boomers.

>> No.8874370

>>8874335
Honestly I liked the tribal hunting, it was an extra challenge as many of them required you to be careful with the crossfire. Some of them were hidden yes, but exploring the levels was fine imo, in the end I could do all the levels and it felt good.
What I thought was more bullshit was the ship part hunting, a lot of it was hidden in very cryptic ways. Like I had to look up a guide for it, not for the Tribals.

>> No.8874380

>>8872601
It's a pretty cool game. I liked the boss fights, they were a nice challenge. It was one of the games where Rare's started to go off the collect 'em up deep end though. The music is really good in some places, underwhelming in others. You could make Vela stand in front of the camera and bounce her chest. It also had "Mr. Pants" shit in it, a Rare forced meme.

>> No.8874415

>>8874346
I think you hit the nail on the head. I often wonder what timeline we'd be in if Nintendo had worked something out with Rare. Early data mining of Smash Ultimate showed they were considering having Jet Force Gemini get a spirit, so it's something Nintendo is still "aware of" in some regards. Wonder if it could have had staying power into the next console generation or seen a revival thanks to virtual console

They probably should have made it where you needed like 75% of the tribals for the ship part and 100% for a bonus ending or something. They aren't even the most bullshit part of the game though, the fucking floyd trials are

>> No.8877297

>extremely repetitive, loose and unengaging.
How? levels are all rather unique, enemy variety is good and, more importantly, enemies are super fun, and most people agree JFG is a great experience at least up until you get to the point you have to backtrack and find the ship parts and rescue the tribals, but by then you've already played like 80% of the game.

>> No.8877442

>>8877297
the game is just inherently not fun. the way characters move is very floaty, the guns lack punch, the aiming is horrendous, etc. like I said, it's impressive from a technical standpoint and it has a ton of interesting design elements but the core gameplay just feels like amateur hour. it doesn't have the satisfying, addictive feeling that makes me want to come back over and over.

i just started it for the first time since i was like 12 years old and im having fun, controls are a little clunky but so are a lot of retro games, especially 5th gen 3rd person shooters. im playing syphon filter too and its janky but im still having a blast

>> No.8877476

to each their own. I'd much rather play something like Star Fox 64 for some good 5th gen 3D blasting but if you can enjoy it, more power to you. it just felt very boring to me.

>> No.8877478

>>8877442
The controls are a tad bit floaty/slippery but all in all they work, I disagree about the aiming, it works rather well with a real N64 controller and I love the weapons, I think they do have punch.
Gameplay is not what people complain when they complain about JFG, they complain about the later forced tribal hunting part, precisely because they enjoy the game but don't like being forced to git gud in order to finish the game.

except if you do this it fucks up all of the other button maps for changing weapons etc. and is just as uncomfortable in its own way. also no way to change pitch so you're stuck with inverted aiming. with customizable button mapping and pitch settings the controls would have been perfectly fine but the end result is just different settings which are each equally uncomfortable. only the id Software shooters got shooting controls right on N64.

After 30 years of playing shooters on both M&KB and game pad. I feel like aiming is obviously better on a mouse, but certain aspects of movement are lost with a keyboard. Why we don't have pressure sensitive keyboards as mainstream, I don't know. I'm sure some meme company has done it.
